Default Golf Stats or Tracking Program

Never really been into my own stats but i want to work out what areas i need to improve
    What are you folks using?
    Aps? Programs? Trackers?
Ap would be good as scoring is now done on ours phones so i can do it at the same time
Not really keen to put things on the end of my grips
    After any feedback, advice, suggestions
    Cheers

There are a few choices. I use golfshot (free version) and quite like it.

I've also just started trying out golf stats coach, which isn't free but does stroked gained. A bit more work to enter data though because it records more details. Jury's still out on it.

I just use the Garmin app from my watch
never look at the stats though, they dont publish them in a meaninful way for me. might work for some but i just use it as a reference to my scores.

my experience is that anythng that requires a lot of tedious input soon becomes a chore. The only stat that is eventually meaningful for me is long term hole averages. its not always obvious which holes are costing you more shots.

That's why I like golfshot - tee club, tee shot result (hit or miss direction), score, putts. Fast and easy after each hole.

For me nothing is fast and easy about stuffing around with a phone on the golf course.

Just started using golfpad GPS. Mainly use it for tracking shots, as it will recommend a club based on previous distances hit, but it counts stats as well. I've actually found it less stuffing around because all I have to do is stand at my ball (or the tee off area) and hit the track shot button, then phone goes in my pocket. I didn't find it slowed me down at all. It was interesting to see actual distances of the different clubs, most were as expected but some were a bit longer, one 9 iron went 145m to the green from rough 😳

Golf Pad is good Jonti. Probably a lot more useful for you than it is for me.

I'm using Golf Metrics which I think is the Mark Brodie app for strokes gained. Have only used it for one round, and I probably should have worked out how to use it before I started. Will do another one this week.

I tried the Taylormade MyRoundApp, and think it could be good as it does strokes gained, but obviously with strokes gained it means more info is requried....plus strokes gained does not allow for me when I pick up a lot

Otherwise GolfShot has been good for basic stats and GPS

Shot Scope V3 has now been released. Golfbox have them for $370. Which sounds expensive, but it does include full GPS functionality, so no need for two devices.

I have Garmin S20 which does the same thing. But it misses recording of many shots, and adds extra random shots all over the place.

Mostly it misses Drivers ( probably because i hit it 180 straighty), and detects practice ships and random bumps and knocks.

Is Golf Metrics a subscription style of payment to use?

Try and see if any driving ranges near you have toptracer. Whaleback in Perth does. You create a profile, link it to your profile to the bay you in. There is several formats on toptracerGo to the my practice. Enter your club you using and it averages the distance. If you duff a shot, hit mulligan and it removes it. You can even go to the app on your phone and rename clubs or remove them. It list all clubs carry, total, launch, ball speed etc.

Yeah it is, i think when you first download it you get a week free to trial, but from then on out its a subscription/payment based app.

On sale currently for $300 . At that price it's actually tempting

I’ve got it and used it for 12+ months over the last few years.

Completely worth every cent if you want to ‘actually’ improve. The rest of these apps are just fluff IMO.

They dont give any data that is worth anything in terms of improvement, you might get a warm fuzzy feeling when you see you hit the fairway 75% of the time or you had 1/1 sand save.

Golf Metrics is proper strokes gained data, broken down into useable metrics.

ie- overall (50+rnds) I lost more shots chipping <20m from the hole than any other shot and short game was my biggest deficiency.

However in the last 5 months after taking that info and working on it, I’ve made the <20m short game a strength.

I’ve gone from high singles down to 3 based mainly on the info the app spits out and the work I’ve put in. It’s no surprise why top Pro’s have teams of people scouring Strokes Gained Shotlink data to find weaknesses and turn them into strengths.

That's what happens when I try to use my phone browser....

I'm keen to know where I'm losing my shots instead of guessing.

What do you use to track your shots?

I've seen that ShotScope will be adding strokes gained metrics which I'm thinking will make a decent alternative?

You put it in after your shot. It’s very simple.
All you put in is the lie and distance to the hole. Recovery is for when you can’t go directly to the hole and triggers lost strokes on the previous shot (ie the one that put you there)

There’s a pretty good FAQ page. I email Mark a few weeks back and there is an update in the works.

    http://golfmetrics.com/faq/

Whatever app you use in terms of platform, strokes gained is the only serious format if you want to improve. 18birdies has strokes gained but it’s a bit clunky, shotstohole.com is very detailed but requires a lot of data input, GRGS is good but I found it hard to use.

I settled on Golfmetrics because of the ease of input, plethora of data that comes out and price.

I am using GolfPad, just the free version for now. It incorporates GPS. I just have to get in the habit of phone in pocket and enter for each shot. It dies do strokes gained. The free version has some, and apparently the paid version has a more in depth analysis. I'll see how it goes over a few more rounds.

I remember reading an article in good digest years ago (the paper version, so it was a long time ago now) where a pro was saying that if you give him your stats for gir and putts (may have been putts per gir) and he could pretty much guess your hc, within a small margin of error. He was saying they're the only two stats you really need to keep.

Buggers me if it's true, cause I'm still shite

Yeah I think Strokes Gained (Golf Metrics) is the best way to go if you really want to delve in to your stats. I mean fairways hit and everything doesn't really tell you the whole story, especially if you're a foot off it. It surprises many people when they actually get a bunch of data that contradicts their thoughts about their own game.

Is this a purely manual process? I mean does the app use GPS and a map of the course to tag shots?
