Default Cost of golf clubs gone mad?

    Hey crew,

I haven’t been around golf circles for a while but have been looking at iron sets of late and it seems like they have gotten super expensive. This is from new to old. Anyone else find this? What happened?

This is the main culprit, I’d suggest 90% of the problem. US prices haven’t shifted much at all.

The other thing to think about is the major manufacturers are pushing the limits to differentiate, things like the use of ‘premium’ materials, not using ‘made-for’ shafts etc.

I think (and I read somewhere) PXG and their success gave most manufacturers the idea that golfers are willing to pay a bit more.

Club cycles are generally 1-2 years.

If you stay behind the curve, even by only a few years you can save a great deal of money

You watch tho, even if the AUD gets stronger don't hold your breath for prices to drop. Australia has a habit of not passing these savings onto consumers in many industries, not just golf.

Exactly. However it would be nice to walk into your local retail store to try and buy, not just try.

Becauae they've imported all their stock at the shit AUD value. They can't pass on what they don't get so until the AUD is much stronger, the import value remains much the same I'd imagine, hence the price remaining the same.

Agree and I'm aware of the lag. This is more a general point that companies are great at blaming the AUD for increased prices but very slow to implement any savings to customers.

Not going to start on golf retailers, that is a can of covid-19.

Best part about Golfbox and GCO is the lack of interaction. If you want to get ‘fit’ start at standard lie and loft and experiment.

    It’s not rocket science

Well the govts strategy was to give people money to spend not horde it.

Apparently sales of $10000 cars has gone through the roof.

New Mizuno ST-G 220 driver just released for pre-order on Golfbox for $949. Looks to be a good thing but this seems to be a $150 jump over their previous driver options.

One of my mates was told by the Titleist rep that golf ball prices will be going up due to a shortage of surlyn.

This podcast delves into the subject:

That's a lot of money. Mizuno often have a great range of no-upcharge shafts, but they'd want to be great to justify that price.

Have you seen how cars have gone up 15% as well? A 65k car from Jan 2020 is now $75 on the road. Somehow its not being reported, but inflation seems to be increasing rapidly.

From all reports I am reading out of USA, everything has gone up. food prices worldwide are up 30% in 12 months.

One article cited huge increases in energy costs are a major factor. But its ok, we will soon all have free electricity from the sun

Cars are the purest example of supply and demand.

There's a massive new car shortage because of the microchip shortage. Pretty much all new cars have been selling at RRP - it's not really a price increase, it's just put the negotiating power back in the hands of the dealers. Even fleet buyers, who are used to buying cars at cost, or even under, are having to pay the full amount.

The new car shortage has lead to a massive used car shortage as people are forced to keep their old cars until the new one arrives, generally 3-6 month. At this point, a lot choose to sell privately as the dealer cannot commit to a purchase price for the trade in, 3-6 months away.

Used cars at the high point had jumped 20-30% in a lot of cases. People were actually making profits on cars they'd purchased over a year ago.

Anything being sold privately is chased by dealers / wholesalers, as soon as it is listed online.

The market is slowly resetting, but it is still a long long way from getting to where it once was.

The market in Canberra is insane, especially used.
We had 30000 cars written off in one hailstorm last year - about 15% of the market.
With lockdowns and inability to get to Sydney, car prices here are nuts

Glad I got in last year, as it's worse now.

Quick example. 2020 Stinger GT new could be picked up for $64k in January.

Now $75k for immediate delivery, or wait 6-12 months for your customised options.

    Yikes

$75k for a Kia! $64k is ridiculous as it is but $75k? It'd have to be wrapped in gold surely....
