Its a very different course depending on conditions. When its wet its is long but in the dry not so much. Members play the blue tees in the monthly medal and club champs. Local knowledge helps off the tee. Was a member for a couple of years so got to work out the course.

Onto Tin Can Bay and a round at the 18 hole layout that sits alongside the main road into TCB. The course was in good condition, with the greens rolling okay. The course slopes away from the road down to a wetland. The front nine has several holes that run up and down the slope and then the back nine has the reverse where several holes run across the slope. Several dogleg holes that can catch you out if off line. The course is well tree lined but the fairways are reasonable generous. Couple of tight approaches into Par 5's - 8th and 18th were water can come into play, but overall for me the course didn't have a great challenge in it. Green Fees were $35, with a Par of 72 @ 5471m. Slope 107 Scratch 68.

Next up was Fraser Lakes GC, which is a 10 minute drive from Hervey Bay. I had played this course quite a few years ago, so I thought I would have another hit there. Fraser Lakes is a good layout with some strong holes and lots of water hazards around the course. Unfortunately the course is let down by a lack of funds, so the presentation and greens are pretty ordinary, add that the course is built in a wetland so they suffer from flooding regularly as well. Given all that, the course is a good challenge and needs to be played more than once to work out a few of the holes as the fairway direction is not always clear. At $20 for a round its good value and plays to 5910m off the Blues. Scratch is 70 and the Slope 114.

Couple of rounds whilst staying in Bargara, at Bundaberg and the Bargara course, both 18 hole layouts.
These were two of the course's that I played at the start of our journey approx. two years ago.
Good quality courses with the recent rain having the course's in excellent condition. Bargara probably had the slight edge on presentation and quality of the fairways over Bundaberg, but both course's have great greens. I find Bundaberg's green's harder to read and they also have more drop offs around the greens as well. Bundaberg has a bit more length than Bargara and a few more dogleg holes, that makes Bundy the tougher of the two course's.
Reduced green fees during the week at $24 Bargara and $20 at Bundaberg is a good deal. I started mid morning, got on easily with the course's pretty much empty.

Continuing North and revisited a couple of course's at 1770 and Emu Park. 1770 is a short nine hole course, Par 34 that is well looked after and has good quality greens. Four Par 3's, a couple of short 4's, a testy 400m Par 4, provide a nice mix along with a couple of Par 5's. Heavily tree lined and some nasty rough off the fairways and a few water hazards are there to keep you honest.
Emu Park this time round was very dry considering the rain that has been around the area. Emu Park is a challenging and hilly course, with several blind tee shots to keep you on your toes. Its a course that needs to be played a few times to get the lines to hit! The Vets were out and interesting they only play 14 Holes (the original course) not sure if this is a protest against the new holes, as 17 and 18 are a couple of tough holes to finish.

Next up the road was the Haliday Bay Golf Resort.
After reading the website, I thought it would be ok with the words - pristine, Ross Watson designed, second to none in the Mackay/Whitsunday region....let just say that is all BS!
Not sure of the history of the place, but the "resort" is run down to the point that it might as well close and the accommodation units looked very rundown.
Whilst you can see the design elements in the course, with the fairway contouring, bunkers and greens, plus the design of the holes, the course has been let go. The bunkers were overgrown with grass, so they were totally unplayable, the greens were so bumpy and patchy a putt can go anywhere and general mess around the course showed a major lack of funds.
The course itself is a compact layout where the risk of being sconed by a ball is quite high, no more so than the Par 4 7th at 245m where you tee shot landing area is right beside the previous green.
With a bit of TLC and money, it would be a great 9 hole course with fantastic views out to the ocean.
$20 to play 9 or 18 in its current condition is a bit OT. The 9 holes measure out at 1899m, with 4 Par 3's and no Par 5's.

Some pretty warm weather up North, that's being called a heatwave for this time of year and from most reports a light wet season. Managed to get out and play Bowen GC twice, with the course being in great condition. For a change Bowen had little wind but the heat and humidity was making up for it. Also had the luxury of a golf course view from out site and could walk to the 3rd hole and start from there!
Bowens a nine hole layout with the 18 tee box set up, with the exception of one hole the tee boxes provide a different angle or length to the holes. Not to many bunkers on the course and a few water hazards that come mainly into play on the Par 5's.
The 1st/10th is a tough Par 4 starter to the nines at over 400m and with a strong ocean breeze is a challenge. The Par 5's have a couple of turns and water to cross/catch your stray shot as well. The Par 3's are all about the wind, and if it is up, it will add length to these holes. Overall a well kept and challenging course, that can change a lot with the wind direction and force.

Up the road a bit further to the Cardwell Golf Course a 9 hole/18 tee box layout course, with the ranges a stunning backdrop.
The tee boxes mix the length up on the holes and some subtle angle changes.
The greens at Cardwell rolled well, where raised (due to the wet climate), on the smallish side and had a few gentle slopes.
Solid starting Par 5 498m, that stretches to 540m second time round with OB down the right. The Par 5 6th/15th has a big dogleg, internal OB on the left and a gully (usually has water) in front of the green so the second shot requires some thought.
The 9th /18th switches from a short 242m Par 4 to a 168m Par 3 second time round, a water hazard runs down the left hand side and OB all down the right. The audience at the clubhouse looms at the end of the fairway.
The course was in great condition even though the rainy season has been light.
The White tees measure 5441m, Slope 108 and Scratch 68. Par 71 and Green Fee of $30 for 9 or 18.

It was a long time ago I played both those courses but then the only green I saw was on the pool table in the clubhouse.
    Both looking great!

Finally got out for a round at our extended stay in Mission Beach, first week was stinking hot and the last week it poured down everyday. Was intending to have a round at Tully but after the week of rain it looking pretty wet and it was raining at Tully, so I shot 10 minutes up the road to El Arish where it was fine and sunny!
El Arish is a short 9 hole layout - 4x Par 3's and 5x Par 4's, with not a big variation between tee blocks from the front to the back nine's. The par 3's range from a 100m hole up to a 180m, that tends to play into the breeze. The 8th/17th is a decent Par 4 at 401m that again tends to play into the breeze. The course was lush and green but a lot drier than Tully. The greens had a bit of slope to them and putted pretty well considering the recent wet weather. A small creek runs through the course which comes into play on a few of the Par 3's and the dogleg 3rd hole if you try and take the corner on to get to the green.

    Par 64

First round at Tully Country Club after two attempts were aborted due to wet weather. Tully is a 9 hole - 18 Tee Layout. Not a big variation between the nines, the 6th hole changes to a Par 5 adding on an extra 70+m and a few other holes have distance variations. The course is pretty much flat, with wide fairways that are lined by narrow strips of trees. The fairways (hardly surprising) are lush with thick grass, that don't give up a lot of run. A few waterways run through the course and feature on a number of the holes, a small pond catches the eye on the Par 3 7th hole as well. The greens were all raised and some had a few slopes to them and rolled okay, but a little slow. I found the layout a bit ho hum, with quite a few similar holes - hit driver, straight shot into the green. The 8th/17th would be the best hole on the course, Par 4 426m with a waterway angling across the fairway at 50/60m short of the green.
An interesting site at the course is the skydivers coming into the local airport that runs down the side of the course.

Would be limited by space and revenue I'd say. Not to mention the amount of times the course would be unplayable due to the wet.

Another new course in Innisfail. A nine hole layout with a good change around on tee positions for the second time round.
The course was heavy in a few spots, but considering the recent wet weather and that the work is all done by volunteers it was coming back ok.
The 1st/10th hole is a dogleg downhill Par 4 with OB on the right, a tricky Par 3 2nd/11th across a creek and bush will test the game early. Some good length Par 4's, that feature doglegs and creek crossings in the middle holes and a dogleg Par 5, in dry. The 8th is a short Par 4 with a small elevated green and the 9th plays all its length uphill back to the clubhouse.
Green condition was pretty ordinary with putts wandering a bit and wedges plugging on the greens.
Overall I would put the layout ahead of Tully, as the holes have more variety.

First time in the Central Desert with a round at Alice Springs GC.
The course is a challenge with narrow fairways, and rough that is either red dirt/sand or clumps of grass and rocks. Hit into the rocks/grass and you'll be lucky to find your ball.
The greens rolled pretty good, some interesting contours on some, that are protected by swales and bunkers.
The front nine has a bit more going on with elevation shifts on holes, were the back nine has the addition of water on a couple of holes, but flatter.
Overall a interesting and challenging layout, target lines are tricky first time round.

Quick stopover at Port Augusta and got out for a round in the arvo with about five players on the course.
Port Augusta is an 18 hole layout, grass greens and well grassed fairways, somewhat of a surprise considering the surrounding terrain. The course has a good mix of holes, back to back par 3's on the front and back nines, a few tight and short Par 4's and a couple of Par 5's. The course is undulating in places, well tree lined, a few dogleg holes and rough that can be bare patches of red sand. Greens were pretty good, little slow, rolled ok. A few greens were elevated from the fairway, with the 12th a double tier the exception from the generally one level greens.
Port Augusta was fun and interesting course to play, has views of the Flinders Ranges and good value at $20 for Green Fees.
Onto the Yorke and the exception of the Copper Club will be the last of grass greens for awhile.

Just for interest Coober Pedy GC...too windy and dusty to play.

First of the black "greens" on the Yorke and played Wool Bay, a short 9 nine hole course, same tee blocks all the way except for the 18th that changes to a long Par 3 from a 4. The course has a few moderate slopes, but generally pretty flat, wide fairways, that are still well grassed. A couple of sloping "blacks" and a couple of long par 3's (200m) that provide a bit of interest for the course.
    Par 67
    Scratch 65
    Slope 95
    5076m
    Green Fee $6

Next along the journey was Warooka, one of the few full 18 hole "blacks" around. The course is on an undulating site, the front nine is a bit up and down the slopes and the back nine has more variation in the directions. Pretty sure the season has ended for this part of the country as the fairways were super long and a real struggle to find the ball, and made the course long. Good mix of Par 3's, the 6th @ 121m has trees to clear to hit the green and a couple of up hill Par3's on the back nine add interest. Overall a good mix of holes and would be good to play when the fairways aren't as long. Both courses the "blacks" were firm and rolled ok, compared to some.

Another couple of the "black" courses played in Yorketown and Wallaroo. I'd previously played Yorketown, a 9 hole layout with a few changes in tee blocks the second time round. Fairways are fully irrigated and were in good condition. Couple of interesting holes in the par 5 4th/13th with a road running through the middle of the fairway, good drives can get across the road! The other is the par 3 170m 16th that crosses the road and a water hazard. Good value at $10 a round.

Wallaroo was a new layout to play, full 18 hole course that is generally pretty flat. Fully irrigated lush fairways and tee blocks, reasonably space on the fairways as the rough cut is pretty horrible. Open to the wind and lush fairways make it play longer than the card states. The club is currently applying for funding to change the blacks to full grass greens, so hopefully they get that as apart from the Dunes (9holes) they would be the only grass green course on the Yorke and a full 18 holes. Couple of strong holes to start the nine Par 5 1st @ 470m with a fairway that slopes right to left, OB down the left and the 2nd 392m Par 4 that plays up a rise that is exposed to the wind from the south and north. Back nine starts with a dogleg 366m par 4, and features a few other dogleg holes, 16 and 17 are a couple of par 5's that can bring a birdie opportunity depending on the direction of the wind.
An interesting course to play, a few water hazards to contend with and the ever present breeze.

Onto another of the scapes courses that are still open for the summer on the Yorke, Maitland GC. The course is not overly long at 5122m, has fully irrigated fairways, tricky short holes, quite well tree lined and over slightly undulating land. Different layout in that it goes around the outside of the township in a U shape. Front nine heads off away from the clubhouse, around the back of the town before returning to the 12th hole back beside the cluhouse, the remaining holes are on the clubhouse side. A few blind holes, off the tee and into the greens give a good challenge.

Another Yorke course ticked off in Ardrossan GC, a short 18 hole fully irrigated course with scapes. The course is hilly in places, uphill/downhill and side slopes to contend with. A road splits the course, with the majority of holes on the clubhouse side.
Several dogleg holes and lots of short par 4's (eight of them under 300m) bring achallenge into the course in taking on the corners or hazards.
A couple of Par 5's on the front nine but overall a short course. Well tree lined, OB, water hazards and sloped fairways add the to challenge around the layout.
The 15th 265m Par 4 a good example, a blind tee shot, a sharp dogleg with OB all down the right side, options of hit to the corner or take on the dogleg over the trees, that the fairways runs towards the OB.
Scapes were soft and stopped quickly, and had some humps and slope to them as well.
The course is very well looked after by volunteer labour.
Fun course to play with the angled fairways and tricky short holes.

They can’t get enough water supply to sustain Greens. They have looked into it.
It would be a fantastic course with Greens.
