Social round at Half Moon Bay this morning. 80 net 67 (par 70). 3 birdies but also a couple of 3 putts.

Having no flags in the greens might be a good thing as it was one less thing to think about. Although having all the holes cut as close as practicable to the centre of the front third of the green made it feel a bit more forgiving.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

35 points this morning, no part of the game felt on song. 35 putts and a very average short game made sure I wasn't scoring well. Still just happy to be out there and happy to be able to grind out a score.

    Birdied the first.
Missed the green from 80 on the second, lost a ball on the third.

16 for the front, then 37 off the stick round the back for 38 points.

It was my best round in a few months and I don't have a clue what I was doing differently

37 points today 21 on the front with a chip in bird on the 7th , lost the plot a bit on the back with 2 wipes and a 6 from less than 50 m out on the 12th and a 3 putt 6 on the 13th , finished with 2 pars , best I have hit the ball all year , made a change to my grip with my left hand seemed to deliver the club a bit squarer , time will tell I suppose

Some would say quality farming on the back nine.

96 at Oxley yesterday (par 72), just a social game with a mate. Had a couple of bad holes and lost balls on the front 9 for 51, but played better on the back 9. 45 (+8 ), with one double bogey, two pars and the rest bogeys. Had a birdie chance on the 17th and bloody 3 putted for bogey. Driving was a little erratic but irons, chipping and putting overall were reasonable. I moved the ball back a little in my stance for irons and fairway woods which seemed to work better so I'll keep that up.

36 and I blew a 42 point day. 2 over after 12. Dumb wipe on 13 after catching the trees right and getting the ball spat sideways into the piss off the tee, and missed a 7 footer for a point. Then thinned a flop over the bunker on 14 to 30m long, then missed straight 6 to 8 footers on the last three. Dammit. Played way better than my scorecards 80.

    Stableford at Maryborough today.

Finally managed to birdy 1 with some regulation play, only to follow it with a trash bogey on 2. Highlight on 5 was a hybrid from the right hand fairway trap to set up an eagle try on 5. 50ft putt sat on the right edge, but was an easy birdy. From there it was steady steady for 19pts.

On the back it was also steady steady, until an unlucky bounce of an overhanging branch saw a wipe. More steady steady to finish back 9 in 17pts.

    It's close

    I was 6.4 today, off a daily of 8.

Had a 6.6 dropping off so should stay the same.

I think today was my first ever Thursday game at Ballina. It is usually a ladies only day, but it has now been changed to a medley. I was a bit worried about the speed of play, because most of the ladies played in their regular spots, and they have a reputation as being slow. But they weren't. 3 hours 10, and we had to battle to keep up. My partner and I both wanted to have a bit of a chat, but we couldn't really.

I even wanted to talk about the golf. I only had 32, but it was a good 32. Lots of good shots, hardly any bad ones, but a late fade out (in the heat! 30 degrees in mid-April is very rare) cost me badly.

My first putt of the day hit the flag dead centre at lovely holing pace, hit the noodle in the bottom of the cup, then jumped out of the hole.

It happened again on the 8th.

Let us never speak of the round again.

I wish the old coots were as fast at playing golf as they are at getting on in pairs on the timesheets.

    14/04/2020, Gailes GC, Social 9 Holes (1-9).

I thought my game was at the point where I was close to playing some really good golf. I was wrong and things have got a bit messy instead.
There's not a single part of the game that I would say is going really well, although the putting is at least solid. I've had a lose the plot hole in each of my last couple of rounds too. I don't think a day of working from home is a great mental leadup to playing golf. I might try and start my day with it instead, to see if that helps me get my head in the game.

    Stats: 3/7 fairways, 0/9 greens, 12 putts.
    Score: PXPPBPBBB; +7

    Wet windy day today.
Hitting the driver well into the wind and carried alot with back wind

Putting was a let down with 4 easy 2ft putts missed

Finished the day with 17 and 18 for 35 points off 12hdcp.

Would have been a good day but just disappointed with those misses.

I think today was my third game under the new playing conditions. Like the other two, my score was 32 points, and its actually my fourth 32 score in a row. Consistency, but the wrong kind.

My excuse today was my tee time, about an hour before my normal time. I'm blaming the change of routine for starting with a wipe where I didn't even get to the green before my shots ran out. Three other chip outs on other holes didn't help.

I broke my run of 32 point scores, but in the wrong way, with a 30.

After another very bad start, 32 became the target, and I should have achieved it easily, but two chips on 16 and a 3 putt on 18 topped off quite a nightmare of a day around and on the greens.

I also saw the difference between rushing around to keep up at a 3.15 pace, and waiting on almost every shot at a 3.45 pace. It doesn't seem like much, but the extra half an hour of total time seemed like hours, mostly spent watching the group in front walking to their ball from the tee. While they were putting it was OK, but we caught them at every tee. Painful.
