Definitely, It’s tough enough from the members tees- the Tour tees are WAAAAAAAAY back on most holes. Throw in the conditions and the hard AF greens we’d be murdered

Nearest the pin on 16 would of been a blank sheet for us.

Im sure one of us would thin it, skim across then hit the rocks, bounce up and land on the green

I’m convinced a lot of amateur golfers have no idea about how the set ups differ for the pros. Yeah we can play nominally the same courses but they’re nothing like tournament conditions.

Driver into the bunker, splash it out next to the pin, tap it in. Easy par!

    I for one don't.

For the sand belt aficionados, did the RM "set up" for the Presidents Cup differ dramatically from what the members would have played a medal a month later?

When I was living in the USA in the late Nineties, I got to play in the qualifying rounds for the California Amateur at Spyglass Hill.

That year the final two rounds of the Bing Crosby (ATT) had been rained out so the 3rd and final round was played the Monday after the PGA Championship in Seattle.

Our first round was that day after the pros had played the course setup in tournament conditions with super fast greens and unbelievably tough pin positions etc.

I had played Spyglass in an event a few months earlier but this was night and day different.

Yes, my boss is member and low marker, RM were told by the PGATOUR to keep the green speed at a maximum of 14 on the Stimpmeter.

Accordingly to him they regularly play greens at 16.

I’ve played RM and RA in the Pro Am for the Ladies Open, the main difference is the firmness of literally everything. Fairways are firm, fringes are ultra tight, greens are hard and very fast. Obviously tees in the ladies event are pretty similar to the men but if you ever go to the Old Course you’ll see Open tees are almost in another postcode (out of bounds even)

Mainly it’s down to firmness and the ability to bring the course to the limit of its capabilities. It’s physically impossible to maintain that for an extended period.

Tiger playing with no crowd will be interesting! Will there be fist pumps and automated mash potato yells from a rogue drone.
