Cinderella story, out of nowhere, former greenskeeper, now about to become a Masters champion..... It looks like a mirac.. It's in the hole! It's in the hole!
I genuinely don't know what the desired effect of rolling it back is and I don't think anyone calling for a roll back does either. Is the end result forcing pros to hit 2 irons into any par 4 longer than 400m rather than a wedge? If so, what's a 2 iron? Any iron with a 2 on the bottom or does it have to be a certain loft to hit into that green? Do they have to make them with the same metal and manufacturing methods and design they used 50 years ago?
If that's the ultimate target, more power to you but until it's specified the whole discussion is stupid. Once the target is decided on we can start talking about how to achieve it and what might go wrong along the way.
At the moment it's all vague notions of things being better in the old days with little thought actually being put into it.
If they work out how to hit it as far and as straight as they do now that's ok and there's no need for further change?
I don't know why this stupid won't reply to a particular post
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.

there is no easy answer to the issue. The players wont 'bomb and gouge' at Royal St Georges next year because of unpredictable results in mounds scattered with gorse bushes and the like. It was easy for them at Winged Foot because its flat, and huge greens meant enough room for flyers to hold and/or use some of the undulations to keep the ball on the green. Augusta will be different again because much more tree trouble in many places, then again BDC is talking up a 48d driver.
If they roll back the ball or clubs, the longest hitters will still be the longest and will still get longer. >> but I dont think the game is concerned about that.
However I cant see ruling bodies rolling back the ball. They are steadfast in their position to not have two sets of rules, and a ball rollback would lead to much frustration in amateur golf, at risk of people not playing
if fairways are narrowed at longer distances, or thicker rough, the longest hitters can play iron off the tee, where others still need driver. Matt Wolf hit 7 iron into the 72nd hole after hitting iron off the tee --- ~480 yards. Wow. thats more impressive than the bomb and gouge.
PGA Tour is the 1% of the 1%.
I’ve decided WHO THE F*** CARES how far they hit it. No one in the governing body cares, equipment manufacturers don’t care.
People argue and throw daggers at guys like Bryson for figuring out a method to get the ball in the hole the quickest.
The ONLY reason for restricting distance is to preserve the great and historical courses of the past for Tour play but you know what - Winged foot did that and it wasn’t tricked up or baked out or any of that other bullshit nonsense the USGA tries to pull.
The Old Course on the other hand, that old girl is cooked.

Should we just get rid of the 'par' and it won't matter as much?
the golf world seems to have forgotten that the US OPen Par 70 is artificial. Every other golf course in the world that is 7450m would be a par 72 Augusta is with 10 yards total length as Winged Foot.
With that in mind, this US Open had 16 players shoot under 288, and the winner had 274, and a kid playing in his first US Open shot 280. The lowest score ever by a first time player in the US Masters is 280 (Wally Armstrong 1978 )

How can you get rid of par? Television coverage relies on being able to compare the position of players while they are on different parts of the course.
