    Default 2020 PGA Tour

Lets move on to 2020 shall we, and leave all the clueless posters calling other posters clueless in the 2019 thread. It's 2020, folks.

I'm not sure a lot can be read into the Tournament of Champions. It seems to be an event where a certain type of golfer wins every year, and then that golfer repeats his victory a few years later. i'm not sure how Zach Johnson got his win a few years ago, because he certainly doesn't fit the same mould as Thomas, Shauffle, Reed or D Johnson.

Still in Hawaii this week, but its usually a true birdie fest on a course where all the par 5's could be reduced to par 4's and nobody would notice. Some will be happy to know that J Spieth has withdrawn.

Come on Jim, ZJ has a green jacket and a claret jug at the Old Course. Certainly someone who has made the most of what he’s got.

US$45 million in winnings to sweeten the deal.

Here's a good explanation, cut and pasted from ESPN, so credit to them, of an issue that I wasn't aware of, but will clearly be worth following during the year.

    "The Olympic chase

The first tournament of the new year also offered an example of just how tight the fight will be for one of the four spots for Americans in the Olympic golf tournament this summer in Tokyo.

Thomas' victory further solidified his spot among the top Americans along with Brooks Koepka. Patrick Cantlay's fourth-place finish pushed him ahead of Tiger Woods in the world ranking to sixth and to fourth among the Americans. And while runner-up Xander Schauffele remains behind Woods (seventh) in the world ranking at eighth, he has moved ahead of the reigning Masters champion in the Olympic projection.

The projection for the Olympics begins with the 2018 Quicken Loans National tournament and will conclude on June 22, following the U.S. Open. So it doesn't exactly mirror the current ranking -- tournaments prior to the 2018 Quicken Loans still carry weight in the Official World Golf Ranking but will gradually drop off.

In the current projection, Thomas, Koepka, Schauffele and Cantlay hold down the top four spots, with Woods eighth, but just barely behind fifth-place Dustin Johnson. The ranking formula is complicated and will also be impacted by the tournament minimum divisor of 40 -- which Woods will not make. In the current OWGR, Woods is the fifth American.

The Olympic tournament will take 60 players, with two per country but up to four if players are ranked among the top 15. There are currently 10 Americans in the top 15, and with three major championships, the Players Championship and two World Golf Championship events still to be played, the situation can change frequently.

For Woods, it is going to require a high level of play through the U.S. Open. Not necessarily a win, but several top-5s at the very least."

The bottom line is that some very good US players aren't going to make it, whether that be Woods, Schauffele, Cantlay or someone else, assuming they all want to play.

There is also an interesting Olympic story for Australia. Only two will make it. At the moment those two are Scott and Leishman. Scott has been quoted as saying he's not sure he'll play. Who knows what Jason day wants, or will be fit to do. But the volatile nature of rankings might mean that if Cameron Smith has a win in a big event, his ranking might get him close to qualifying. It could be well worth watching the rankings table to see what happens.

Not only did Cam Smith win, he overtook Jason Day in the world rankings, making him the second Australian Olympic qualifier.

Interesting times on the Olympic front.

Given how often Day is out injured lately who knows if he would be available.

I have to correct myself. I forgot about Adam Scott, and I was just looking at Leishman and Day, so Smith is a few spots behind Leish. Smith still might make it, as Leish hasn't done anything spectacular for a while.

But it is still a major surprise to me to see Day ranked 37, and presumably dropping week by week unless he starts playing well. After he won the PGA I was sure he'd be a top 10 player for years. But he's not.

Good on him. Glad attempting some Tommy 3 gloves action didn’t derail things for him.

Wouldn’t turn up if he could. He’s seemingly got a pathetic amount of drive these days.

Torrey Pines this weekend. Should be really good.

Finally. the true superstar of golf, Jason Day will be making his 2020 debut. Apparently, Jordan Spieth and some guys named Rory and Tiger will be on the course for at least two rounds, as well.

The real highlight will be if JB Holmes is in contention on the last day, so we can relive one of the most shameful moments in recent golf history.
