I've looked into these full screen ads, which Google calls Vignette ads. As I said, I have Google Ads set to automatically experiment with ads, to produce the best revenue. In this case, it tested the vignette ads on 50% of users over Sept 13 and 14, for at 149% revenue uplift. Because of this Google Ads applies the change.

I've now rejected the automatic change, so these type of ads should not be appearing anymore.

It was getting a little invasive on the mobile. Felt like every 6 or so clicks and almost always on the first click back when refreshing the page after a short break.
