I know that the Kiwis are rated no. 2 in the world, but I just can’t rate them that highly with this approach. Win the toss on a greenish deck, get Australia 2 down for well less than 100 and they resort to defensive bowling (6 short balls an over from Wagner with no slips combined with Grandehomme bowling 6 outswingers in a row pitching 2 feet outside the off-stump). Piss-poor stuff.

Thing that is so bizarre about the Kiwi's tactics is that Southee is showing that the ball, even though it is 60+over old, is still moving around lots.

And, within one over, Southee also adopts the ‘bowling outside the leg stump from around the wicket with a packed leg side’ tactic. If every team adopted this approach, Test cricket would die within a few years.

If wade hooked a couple successfully they would stop

I was just looking at Santner's bowling figures. He averages 174 in the first innings of a match.

Just for some variety, De Grandhomme just plonked six consecutive deliveries well outside off stump, but is "unlucky" to not get a wicket.

For some really riveting cricket, just imagine the Kiwis playing against England with Boycott and Tavare opening. Could be the first time a team batted the entire day without losing a wicket but scoring less than 50 runs.

Wade goes to a decent ball pitched up around off-stump. Head comes out, and his first few balls are all WIDE outside his off-stump.

Great to see Head go on and nab himself three figures. He's been a little frustrating at times so far but the other day i saw stats for a heap of other notable Aussie bats up until Head's current number of innings and he sat quite comfortably among them. He could well blossom into a fine long term Test batsman and i'd be giving him a lot of time to prove it. Really happy for Paine too, that was a very important innings at a very important time and he batted really well.

It would be nice to see Wade and Burns score a big one before the series is out to solidify our line up that little bit more. If the Series is done maybe they will give Swepson a start in the last Test. We need to weed out our back up spinner and it would be great if a leggie come out and took the bull by the horns. We've got some good depth in the fast bowling department now and Meridith has some good potential too.

Boult is going home with an injury to his non-bowling hand after Starcy hit him yesterday so will not play in Sydney.

Australia are making a joke of New Zealand's test ranking and their batting averages.

I was trying to work out how this rabble became the #2 ranked test team?

They’ve won 8 of their last 10 series not sure against who or whether the majority were home or away.

The last 6 are hardly convincing:

    v England (2 tests)
    v Sri Lanka
    v Bangladesh
v India (got pumped at home)
    v Pakistan
    v Sri Lanka (again)

Surprised Zimbabwe and Ireland weren’t in the list too.

Any wonder Michael Vaughan called the ICC Test Ranking system utter garbage.

For those who don't watch, or just didn't see The Big Bash tonight, the umpire did the classic 'I think its out, yes its out, no it isn't and I'll scratch my nose instead' move. We always used to joke about that sort of thing in low grade cricket, but I never ever saw it happen.

It'll be all over the net and places like The Back Page tomorrow.

Australia are just so strong at home when fielding good teams. Right now we are fielding a good team, to say the least. Labuschagne is batting like one of the best batsman in the world, in a purple patch. Seldom has anyone improved so much in such a short time and he's held that form for some time in two different countries and sets of conditions now. Warner is turning it on again at home which wasn't exactly hard to predict. Smith by his standards has underperformed woefully but with the emergence of Marnus and form of Warner it hasn't mattered.

Burns may or may not cement his spot and good runs in the last Test would be handy. Wades come under a bit of fire but is actually averaging near 50 in the home season Tests. He only batted once in each of the Pakistan Tests and hit 60 and a quick 38no which were quite handy. He failed in the 1st Test against NZ but had 38 and 30no in the game just gone. Noway would i be dropping someone on that, particularly with no-one knocking on the door. Heads excellent ton picked up some slack for him and he could well emerge as a good long term Test bat. Paine batted superbly last Test and kept well throughout.

It's a world class bowling attack in any era. Injuries are the big worry but we have 4 bonafide frontline pacemen and a couple more emerging. We have zero back up spinning stocks really and it would be interesting if they gave Swepson a game in Sydney. Each Test matters now tho so they might stick with what has worked no matter what Warnie thinks. Lyon's response to him was simply brilliant.

Barring injury i think we could be favored at this point in time to beat India out here in 12 months imo. We gave them a good series last time (mainly thru our bowlers) without Warner, Smith and for all intents Labuschagne and are a far better team currently. India are the top team tho and what a series it is building into. They too are awesome at home.

SMH are reporting that Marnus is now #4 test batsman and Aussies have moved from #5 to #2 test team.

Marnus can move to #3 if he performs well in Sydney.
