Ben Matulino already medically retired by the NRL.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said salary cap auditor Richard Gardham will put the Broncos medical retirement application for Gillett through the same processes as the Burgess submission and the recently approved request for Wests Tigers prop Ben Matulino.

"I don’t foreshadow any issues but we will do the same thing, we’ll run through the same process and same rules and make the same determination according to the facts," Greenberg said.

    Looks that's a done deal.

I assume the medical retirement thing is a way of still paying them their contract money for the remaining term of the contract and it not counting for the salary cap? Sounds like a stupid question I know, but surely if they can’t play you don’t pay them?

Or is to prevent a player saying they will try to keep playing, go through therapy etc. and just draw their wage for whatever the contract period is and the club gets zero game time out of them?

In the legal age we live in, I would be interested to see what Worksafe and their insurer has to say about it.

If they get injured part way through a contract and can’t work again I think it’s fair they get paid out at least a portion of the remaining contract.

I assume the NRL needs to sign off on it to stop clubs signing blokes to a 5 year $400k deal, retiring him after 2 and continuing to pay him.

The contract is effectively $1 million a year with only $400k counting towards the salary cap.

I expect to be fully disappointed... but hoping that the Qld Govt. maintains its stance on the NRL flu vaccine.

Well if that is the new direction for the NRL i think I'll give it a miss. Too much like soft touch footy and a long way from Rugby League.

Haven't watched league for years, the endless run 5m and fall down bored me shitless, but these rules changes sound like they've made it more free flowing, might check it out again.

I am the opposite. This version of football is absolutely boring and bears little real resemblance to rugby league. All they had to do a few years ago was to persist with the penalty crack down in the rucks but the administration gave up and we now have a game that looks stupid (especially the rolling the ball instead of playing it).

My god these broncos are a joke. They will be praying for COVID to come back and save them. Nothing makes me happier though than seeing the broncos were they should be.

If you let players like Andrew McCullough with 260 games under his belt go along with guys like Nikorima and Maguire you end up with a young team. Nobody to blame except for their shit roster management, every club suffers injuries.

Anyway, it was almost the great trifecta over the first three games this weekend if only the Storm had lost.

Jarro, know they are down on troops but so are the Raiders, Manly and a few others. Surely he can't stick with Milford and Boyd any longer, their turnstile impressions are reminiscent of the days when Anthony The Man was letting people waltz thru the Dragons backline.

Agreed, plenty of players need dropping.

Hopefully when a few of the injured return those players get stood down.

Surely after the last week of NRL idiots failing to observe the covid guidelines its time for the Qld Govt to close the season down.
