    Default New member in Newcastle

    Hi all,

Just joined the forum. I'm in Newcastle and my club is Merewether.

I played a fair bit as a teenager but only played sporadically in the following 17 odd years. I played a fair bit of twilight golf the previous summer and joined so I could play in the winter and get a handicap again. I tend to play about once a fortnight and my GA handicap has recently got down to the low 10's. If I could sort out a short game I reckon I could shave a few more off.

    Cheers,
    Mitch

    Welcome to OZgolf, Mitch.

We've got another Newcastle area member here, so hopefully he pops in.

    Hi Mitch,

If I was to organise a golf weekend around Newcastle with mates, what would the three best courses be?

Newcastle GC is a lock. What else is worth the round?

Will let Mitch answer..........however for some reason I've never played at Belmont despite going past it 100s of times. Will be on my list next time I'm back up there. Home of the Lake Macquarie Amateur, pretty impressive list of former winners.

Horizons and Belmont are the other 2. Pacific Dunes is good if you like to punish yourself!!!

    Welcome Mitch.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

    Welcome Mitch.
I have a mate at Newy who is a member of Tanilba Bay - it's a pretty rough course but he loves it. Seems like there are plenty of courses up that way to wet your appetite.

    Thanks everyone.

Belmont is on my long list of courses in the area that I need to play. I played Tanilba Bay last summer and it's a bit rough but it's cheap, cheerful and an interestingly course. I'd happily go back.

If I had to choose two more courses I would say Belmont and Pacific Dunes. Another option is to head out to the vineyards to play Cypress Lakes.

It seems that Newcastle is rarely in the news for good news.

    Hey Mitch..
I'm from Newy also and a member at Tanilba at the moment while I'm getting back into golf, was previously at Newcastle. Might be re-joining there again soon.

Top courses in the area would be Newcastle, Pac Dunes, Belmont, Charlestown (great greens).

Narnia, Neverland and Westeros GC for your fantasy trip.

    Welcome Mitch,

I’m another from Newcastle, I used to play at Merewether, good challenging track. But I have since moved out of town and now hack around Waratah on the weekends.

    Thanks.

Merewether is working well for me. For the amount I play the flexi membership works well and it helps that I only live a few k's away.

Waratah is another course on my list to play in the local area.
