    Default WDYSTM May 2019

02/05/2019, Lakeside Country Club, Solo 9 Holes.

Look at me starting a monthly thread. Does that make me a golfer again?

I had the day off on Thursday, and I really do want to get back into golf again, if the body will let me, so I planned a visit to a new course for nine holes. I didn't hit very good tee shots; I started with pull draws, and then changed it to pushes about half way through. However, the chipping went great, and the putting was solid. It was scratchy, but hopefully it is something that I can build on.

    Score: PPXXXPPbX - 28 (+3) - Par 31
Stats: 0/1 fairways (made birdie anyway), 3/9 greens (one thanks to a tree rebound), 14 putts.

Monthly Medal at HMB. Net 78 (par 70).

Put 3 in row OB into the mangrove on the 5th hole for a lovely 10. 🤬

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

First round of club champs, difficult conditions as it rained the whole day with zero run, plenty of 'mud balls'.

Shot -1, only hit 9 x GIR, had 26 putts.

Played a comp out at a course called Eynesbury yesterday, never been there before but thought it give it a go. Turns out I won the comp with 40 points. 13 pars, two birds, a bogey, two doubles.

Haven’t heard to many good reports about that place but I assume you think it’s ok

I wouldn’t go back there in a hurry. Definitely not worth the $65 fee they charge you. Course was in average shape, greens were patchy but rolled ok. Thought it would be in better condition given the pictures and price tag.

    Default WDYSTM May 2019

    Cairns Open

85/79- played solid until I made a quad on the third last hole followed with a double on the shortest hole on the course. Tap in par at the last kept me from murdering someone.

77/71- played even better with a few birdies before a lucky bogey on 17 and a snap hook-lost ball-double bogey on 18.

9 shots in the last 5 holes of 36.

Chopped with a 92 at Maryborough on Saturday for Nett 82 (+12) in Monthly Medal.

Out today in some glorious weather, shot 19/19 38 including a wipe. No birdies, but a heap of up and down pars kept me in the hunt.

14/19 33 no wipes and somehow lost possession of the Steve Baker Cup to a bloke with 4 wipes. It’s a funny game.

I finally did it. I shot under par for the 1st time ever and in comp to boot. Now I'm north of 50 years of age, I thought a few even par rounds was as low as I'd ever go. I shot 69 today on a par 70. The strange thing is I hit it pretty ordinary. I only hit 7 GIR but made 3 birdies. The secret was getting up and down 9/11 times. Some were putts from the fringe of course but still an excellent effort. Only made the 2 bogeys and one of them was on a par 5 after smoking the drive centre fairway. Went for it in 2 and hit a shocking 3 wood.
Anyway, it's one crossed off the list that I thought would never happen. Easy course so only slope played to of 1. Next dream to pursue is to have a round slope played to +.

Plugged my Garmin watch in last night. Fair dinkum, 3/12 fairways, 7 GIR (originally thought it was 6), 24 putts. I really did hit it crap with some huge misses with fairway woods, even off the tee. I am now convinced more than ever just how important short game is. I'm sick of striping it at the range and it still being a lucky dip on the course. Short game practice will yield much more in terms of strokes gained. Some immediate fairway wood practice is in order but then it's chipping and putting all the way for me.

    Incorrect.

According to the bloke who invented strokes gained.
