Anyone have their club champs coming up? What format? Preparation tips?
We’ve got ours during the month of May in the form of 4 rounds of stroke over 4 Saturdays.
I hardly ever play stroke so if I can play to my handicap or better for the 4 rounds, I’d be very happy.
I’ve been playing with a half set recently but might reintroduce the full set from now till the champs and treat weekly stableford round as stroke play and being a bit more conservative/keeping the ball in play.
Never participated in club champs before so I’m looking forward to the challenge.
Any tips? Or am I building this up way too much in my head?

Cairns GC Club Champs is 4 rounds of stroke usually held around late August/ September. They've experimented over the years in holding it over 2 weekends (Sat/Sun x 2), 3 weekends (Sat, Sat, Sat/Sun) and 4 weekends (Sat x 4). The 72 hole winner is the Club Champion. Top 16 gross in each grade go into a matchplay knockout series, the winner of which is crowned as Matchplay Club Champion (separate title).
I've gone in with high expectations (as many do) only to be sorely disappointed. I find the best way is to just treat it as any other weekend comp round to stay relaxed.
My goal is (and always has been), just to qualify for the matchplay.

Hit it, find it, hit it again. Repeat until it’s in the hole, pick it up, walk to the next tee, start again. The score will look after itself

That’s what I’m thinking. Less expectations and just play smart and to my ability. With your handicap, you wouldn’t be too far from the gross winner if you play to your handicap? Same guy has won ours for the last 6 years. Think he’s off plus one and there’s another guy off plus two. We also now have an ex-Australasia tour player who has regained his amateur status playing off plus two.

Ours are the same dates as yours mate, except 3 rounds only.
My advice is to treat it like any other comp round and don't get caught up in the importance. The old saying applies "You can't win it in Rnd1 but you can certainly lose it". In other words just play percentage golf, no need for hero shots.

I'm in the same boat as you... we have a couple of ex-pro plus-markers. I can't keep up with them over 4 rounds. The winning score is usually even or even under par.

I find 4 rounds of stroke to be beyond dull...….and I get the reasons why its promoted.
We have a "Championship Day" in November, Club/ A Reserve/B/C grade, various board events, women's events, 4 balls etc (all match play) Great day, followed by a dinner and presentation.
Been around golf clubs for most of my life, its the best way to do things I have seen

Beaconhills holds theirs in February and I missed the first round so didn’t play . Olinda play theirs in October and won’t be playing in them . When I do play in champs I work on the theory that you can’t win the champs in the first round but you can certainly loose them .

Worse actually, if it is like my previous club, as it takes 6 to 7 weekends play, stuffing up non-golf plans.
It was two stroke rounds of qualify for 16 spots in the matchplay, then four rounds of matchplay (with contigency for a wet weekend). The matchplay draw usually has up to six revisions, because multiple muppets realise they can't make the quarters, semis or final, if they made it through (even though they ticked the box to enter the matchplay comp.)
4x stroke anyday. Just be prepared for slow rounds behind over-ambitious once a month golfers and aspiring pros. Also, you may have to play at set times in the later rounds, if you are in the top 8 of your grade. (This should be in your club's conditions of competition document for the event.)
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.

Ours is in May and is 3x rounds of stroke over 3 Saturdays.
Never take it that seriously.
Two of our best A graders often get paired together on the final Saturday round despite hating each others guts. I find it pretty amusing despite the tension it causes around the club.

This. 4 rounds of stroke will give you the best player - matchplay for your championships is too flukey for such an important event. After the first 3 rounds (works best if you play them Sat/Sat/Sun), final 8 qualify for the last days play the next Sat. Matchplay champion should be a totally separate event.

Ours has been moved from October to May this year and is 4 rounds of stroke. Previously it was 2 Saturdays and then Sat/Sun, but I think last year they switched to 4 Saturdays. We also have a matchplay event with the top 8 in each grade qualifying.
Unlike PG, I really like playing stroke events and love playing Club Champs. Only thing I don't like about them is the slow rounds.

4 rounds of stroke, Saturday Sunday Saturday Sunday across two weekends. Alternate between 1st and 10th tee, generally same time for all rounds, unless you are seeded then its afternoon tee times for the weekend.
If you have a shocker in Round 1, don't worry. Almost everyone else will have one as well at some point.
I love club champs, as 4 rounds of stroke rewards the consistent player over the streaky player.
I won B grade a few years back without getting close to winning a day event, and came Top 10 gross with 4 rounds of low 80s, avoiding the really bad day that everyone else seemed to have.

In order to be able to complete rounds with less shots and ultimately win club champs you need to become accustomed to having less shots.
Abandon practice entirely and focus instead on visualizing success.

Nice , Olindagolfclub.org.au , better hurry up tho , you have to be s member for six months to qualify for this year , it’s only $110 , plus $980 green fees to beaconhills or $36 per game . Will be an easy win at the moment ,

What I am saying is that Grumpy8 is able to string rounds together under pressure, most other members can have 2 good rounds but can have a bad one as well, usually the 3rd when the pressure to produce is on.
If you can't make 5 inch putts, you may struggle on our greens
