Default Uncivil War VII - Royal Hobart Golf Club, Friday 22nd Feb 2019

The battle lines have FINALLY been drawn, and these two titans of the golfing world are warming up for our very own version of "The Battle of the Bastards (with extra Bastards)".

A massive thank you to Courty and wbennett for assisiting with filling the sides, and also to PeteThePilot for recruiting a couple of RH members to fill the void.

Captaining the Confederate side this year will be 3PuttPete, joined by his willing and able VC, thecollective.

And returning fire for the Union will be Peter_rs, assisted or hampered by (depending on your point of view) Ferrins!

Final pairings for this ding-dong all important stoush, are:

    Fri Draw.JPG

Your team captains will establish pants / short colours shortly, and more information about the greatest day in the OZgolf calendar will be posted as further details emerge.

    PLAY BALL!!!

    Let’s pick random numbers....12 and 18.

In a normal matchplay, the 18 gets 6 shots, on index 1-6.

In the UCW, he gets them on index 13-18.

I’d never thought about it before.

In normal matchplay the shots are allocated on matchplay index (normally) so not quite that either. It also means on the hardest holes the 12 should have an advantage due to better ability.

    In normal match

    Hole Index Hole Index
    1 18 10 5
    2 8 11 11
    3 12 12 2
    4 3 13 15
    5 14 14 7
    6 6 15 13
    7 10 16 4
    8 1 17 17
    9 16 18 9

Courses can vary this. Last week I had to give 6 shots away in pennant - I gave them away on 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 as per the normal table, but other courses can move it around.

    If you go by the Australian Matchplay Index, he'd get them on 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 & 16.

And even under these conditions I'd argue that this is the way a match play should be played even if going off stroke index. You "get a shot" over another player in your group on a Saturday under these Stroke Play Indexed holes because that's exactly what your handicap deems to be fair.

You shouldn't really be getting shots on the hardest hole on the course and up...

With stableford matchplay, a 6 marker will get a shot on the 6 hardest holes, when playing a scratch golfer.
With stableford matchplay, an 18 marker will get a shot on the 6 easiest holes, when playing a 12 marker.

But with a matchplay index, the same 6 holes are given in both cases.

Bit like Goldilocks, with the porridge too hot, then too cold and finally just right.

Uncivil War participants (and PtP), can you please pick your meal of victory / sorrow at Royal Hobart and let me know what you would like. Be specific, as if you just order a Porterhouse, I'll get you a medium etc.
