Overpriced too. He also charged $2 to pay by card, which I didn't think was allowed, because you had to charge the actual percentage cost.

Yep, better off going to Noosa Tewantin for what they charge, still has been added too the list of courses played.

    18. North Stradbroke Island Golf Club* (9 Holes)

Another new course, and another one that is a little rough. The course is only nine holes, but at least there is the variety of a par five, with par threes and fours. The condition isn't fantastic with bare-ish fairways with the sand base, and greens that are okay, but seemed like mowed fairway grass, although I was playing it several days after comp day, so maybe they come up alright.

Good value for play, and would be great for group round. $29 for an adult for all day play, plus only $10 for club hire, although they are basic clubs.

    Here are the beauties.

This is from the first tee, where the fairway goes to the right, then doglegs left; this is the only artificial grass tee. The different tee for the 10th makes the fairway a straight one, and the hole longer.

Back to the clubhouse from the fairway.

Approach to the par 5 2nd/11th green. Plenty of roos to negotiate on the course.

Long uphill par 4 7th/16th. Index 1. I don't know if the branches of that fairway tree were ever in play, but it would have been a nightmare, if it was.

From behind the 9th/18th green looking back down the fairway. Notice the above ground irrigation system; this is for both greens and fairways.

Are these all top courses? The only one I have heard of is the Le Golf National, because of the Ryder Cup.

St Enodoc is top 100 in the world and Le golf National is well known. Rivermont and Smoke Rise are fairly typical US country club courses. The rest are decent but not exceptional.

Some outstanding courses there from PG, MTB and Halfer. Very jealous. PG you must have some pretty good connections over in the states to pull that off.
Cinderella story, out of nowhere, former greenskeeper, now about to become a Masters champion..... It looks like a mirac.. It's in the hole! It's in the hole!

I played The Cradle in the morning & Tobacco Road on the afternoon which was probably the most fun day I have ever had playing golf. It was helped by the fact I was on fire +1 for the 27 holes.

Pinehurst #2 vs Tobacco Road is an interesting one: it’s history vs fun, it’s precise execution vs execution intimidation, its a golfing game vs a golfing experience.

For me they offer something so different and it’s hard to rate between them but if I was to rate the rounds from my break I’d go with:
    1. Bethpage Black - superb architecture and exacting on every shot
    2. Mid Pines - old school course with great green complexes, played my best golf here which probably inflated my rating
    3. Pinehurst #2 - exacting approach play and oozes history
    4. Tobacco Road - pure fun on every hole, just below Pinehurst #2 as slightly too easy if you ignored the intimidation and committed to your shots
    5. The Cradle - short fun on every hole
    6. Pinehurst #4 - enjoyable course but not as good/hard as #2
    7. Pinehurst #8 - treacherous greens but course was a little over tricked up

The thing I would say is that I vividly remember all the holes on Tobacco Road and there wasn’t a boring one among them, so much so it’s hard to rank them, you could pick any from: 14, 16, 18, 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 13, 11 and be justified with a view that it’s the best hole on the course.

Damn, you got me by one on the Cradle/Tobacco rd double. i was going ok at TR but the 16th killed me.I agree with your sentiment, Tobacco Road is not as hard as it looks. Mike Stranz obviously had a lot of talent. I really wanted to play his other course Tot Hill farm, but couldnt organise it

Lol, I played better than I scored. Was +1 after 1 on the Cradle due to a 3putt so parred home from there😀. Birdied 8 on the Cradle then 17, 1 & 4 on TR (I started TR on 14) with 3x3putt bogies on 18, 8 & 9 (all due to miss clubs leaving 40+ft putts) and a proper bogey on 15 after a skied 3W off the tee put me in my only bunker of the day. 16 for me was a hybrid at the pot thing and a gap wedge back off the backstop to 8ft, missed putt. Pin was at the front, like most holes a different pin position would change the approach entirely.

Would definitely like to play Stranz’s other creations as TR is visually unlike anything I’ve seen but harks back to some of the short old courses in Scotland in the use of contour & blind shots to add intrigue/protect - Boat of Garten & Cullen spring to mind.

    Haha, thats hilarious.

I had a former No 1 in the world caddy for me at the cradle. had to sack him after 2 holes, gave me a bad read, talking in my backswing, not keeping up. I am still the best australian golfer he ever caddied for.

A quick jaunt down to Melbourne added a new sandbelt club, and some old favourites on the Bellarine. Commonwealth was solid, but lacks the cohesive routing of the top tier Sandbelt clubs. Some really nice holes though. Curlewis is still a hidden gem, though the new 9th green seems a little out of place. Barwon was a treat as always (though super tough on the windiest day I ever played golf). Beach course is still tough, and Creek is a little bit of the GC in Victoria, though pretty fun to play.
