    Default Good Players

    What constitutes a good player.

Is a good player someone better than you?
Is it a 70 year old off 7?
Is a daily 10 a msrk or a good player or a GA of 10?

    Background

I used to think single figure markers were good players.
Then I became one. I am now off 5.x and I am not a good player, but a home track hero who chops it up.

What defines a good player? Singles, scratch, your 9 time Club Champ like Boonie?

    It’s so subjective...

It’s interesting because there are some players who have mastered one or two aspects of the game (e.g. putting), but are only average at others.

I’d never really thought about it before, but I guess I’d think of a good player as one who is proficient at most aspects of playing the game.

Someone that can win food off Peppas.

But seriously ... Someone who can play a round with more holes under par, than holes over par.

Only when handing out participation certificates.

A very good player has passed the pressure of Q school or retained their tour card.

Agree with courty that it's very subjective.

A good player to me is someone who is consistent with their game more than being a very strong putter or wedge player.

However the level of that is subjective.

MT is a good player. A great player. Played with him only once but immediately when he hit the ball im like "he's a good player!"

But a good player is also someone who plays for the right reasons and who is always great to play with.

    So subjective.

I’ve always been a fan of pure ball striking... someone who compresses the ball and has a dime mark on his irons. The ball just sounds different off the club face.

I play with a young guy who hit his club pure all the time... ball would fly a mile away with a penetrating high ball flight...

Pity his aim/alignment is just terrible....

But for me is someone as good players who can play consistently with all level aspect of the game (long and short games) and also able to control the shaping of his shots.
Played with a +4 player, and he wasnt a monster hitter, but just his ability to have a bag full of options to play his shots and the consistency to get close to the holes was just amazing to watch....

A good player is someone who is above average. The average player doesn't really score very well, so most of us on here are good.

I've always thought one of the traits of a good player is someone on a low handicap who can regularly play close to (or better) than their handicap at courses other than their home track.

I can't really give a specific reason why I've held this view but I have an admiration for those golfers that can play well away from home. Probably because I'm generally crap away from my home course.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

No one plays to their handicap more often than not, unless their handicap is improving or they are a burglar.

Well, I am in FNQ. Point taken. I'm referring to the standard 36 stableford points without all the other handicap calculation factors.

Even then a golfer with relatively stable handicap is only going to average 32 to 34 points per round, depending on the course. It is the math of the handicap system. In theory your GA is an indication of your ability, rather than what you should average.

It's relatively easy to spot a good player, they have those alignment sticks in their bag.

Q school is gone now isn't it?

Plenty of very good players in the college system never make it as a pro.

Exactly. Had the physical ability to shoot good scores, but were unable to take it to the next level.

Depends where one draws the boundary between a good and very good player. (And the next boundary between a very good and a great player.)

It’s still there, just gets you on a lesser tour rather than the big show.

Clearly a handicap of 5 is a sign of a very good player.

Fishing for compliments is a sign of a shit bloke.

Yes, technically it's this. (Although I'd wager a guess these stats are heavily Yank-ised. We all play comps and I wouldn't say anywhere near 2 of the 4 blokes in my groups are shooting 100+)

"According to data from the National Golf Foundation, only 26 percent of all golfers shoot below 90 consistently on regulation 18-hole courses; 45 percent of all golfers average more than 100 strokes per round."

But I also believe its more this. ANYONE can be a home track hero. See it all the time. A bloke who can go away and play around his cap is either a good player, or needs to be seriously questioNED.

    Simple answer.

    No handicap.

Ever seen a good runner using a walking stick?

A lot of running events are handicapped and/or graded. Our 'biggest' running race of the year, The Stawell Gift, is handicapped.
