I don’t usually cancel. I’m normally erasing a pencil commitment

I’m not fussed either way. Will play if it’s still on but won’t cry if it’s not!

Due to the above there is now a single group of 4 booked for 7.07am - just after I’d confirmed there would be 2 groups - grrrrrr

Not a bad morning for the four of us that attended, early 7.07am start off the back 9 to get it over and done with and only a group of 3 in front of us. Weather wise it was fine but quite windy, and that is pretty much how it stayed. Golf wise, things went okay but being a social outing it didn't really matter that much.

Hatchy, as he does, brought out a 'classic' set of Titleist blades and a persimmon 2 wood - the latter he flushed all the way round, gave us and all our modern drivers a right lesson!

Thanks for coning out guys, was a most enjoyable morning, and by the end I had just about remembered what I was meant to be doing!

As for the course, it is better but it's still Thaxted!

Sorry I couldn't make it guys, been at the hospital today watching, waiting....

Some good holes on that back 9, interested to hear your thoughts on the 'road hole' (6th I believe but could be wrong) had some serious undulations to it. I couldn't get my head around it. Perhaps I need a round there with Benje to get his expert opinion

You're needed much more there than out with us hitting a stupid white ball around!

As for the course, in my usual fashion I wasn't really paying that much attention as to what was what BUT a couple of greens would be worth an archaeological excavation as I'm sure there are mammoths buried under them! One in particular, Hole 3, (I think!?) is quite ridiculous!

Hatchy and Waza can probably provide much better feedback as they've played it many times prior to the new layout.

Thanks for the hit fellas. Nice to meet you Flavzz, hopefully we have a new starter for our 4 to 6 weekly bashes.
Thought for a brief moment last year about maybe rejoining Fuxstead but it quickly left my mind before 3 holes had finished.
Greens have improved a hell of a lot, still some ridiculous breaks but are much more puttable now.

I think we were discussing somewhere like Penfield. Like to try and accommodate everyone by North/ South Venues.

Just to be clear about my comments on Thaxted Park's architecture:

The fairways and conditioning won't be mint - not enough water resource and too much clay for that.
The bunkering won't be mint - too much clay soil and not enough money for that.
Not all holes are great - any course trying to route some holes up and down steep hills will have some less than great holes.

Thaxted has two things that are interesting.
A challenging set of greens, with an empahasis on challenging. Some very steep slopes often with a quickish pace.
A 'barranca' (gully) that winds its way through virtually all of the back nine, providing interest on lots of shots from the interaction with a natural feature.

The Vines and Flagstaff have the potential for better conditioning, with greater access to water but they don't have the barranca.
Pick your time of year to see Thaxted and an interesting game awaits.

I drove past Thaxted for years to get to The Vines whilst a member there, and if I was to become a member of one of the two I'd def do so again.

Hands down I would choose Mt Compass over both of those clubs (if I lived in the south)

Yep, best soil (sand), access to water for irrigation, best routing and architecture, now got their conditioning sorted.
A longer drive to/from a better game of golf though.

Agree but wouldn't waste a 12 month membership there. If they had 6 month membership I would be there in a flash.
    I wouldn't bother during winter.

Slightly late but thanks Nadg63, Waz and Flavzz for the hit. As always the company is the best thing.
Good to put another face to a name in Flavzz.
Very happy with the Persimmon 2wood off the tee all day, pity the iron and wedge play wasn't up to the same standard. The old Ping Answer 4 went ok holing a couple of nice ones.
Conditioning was good for Thaxted and Greens were consistent, true and a much more sensible speed considering the slopes on some of them.
They really stuffed up with the green on the new second hole. Who the hell is responsible for the stupidity in making the height change that severe when it's still down hill from back to front and the prevailing wind is also a tail wind if putting or chipping from the back to the front.

I agree it is absurd, reminds me of the old 3D supergrass green on the hill at Greenhills adventure park! although perhaps mother nature has made it more severe due to storm water run off.

As most of you are aware we have a similar issue with #10 @ Tanunda. It's gotten worse over the years due to the run-off of water, that hole needs a re-design but sadly it aint gonna happen while the club is for sale

I don't think Compass is that bad in the cold, there is much worse like Blackwood for instance

As sandy as it is even Tanunda can get quite soggy in places, it is called the off season for a reason

Not worried about sogginess. More worried about icicles forming between the legs.
