Wade’s papers might be stamped , I hope Carey and wade score heaps of runs in the shield , if handscomb can score runs he might go as the reserve keeper , which would give them another spot for a batter or even a genuine swing bowler

We still take reserve keepers on tour? More likely one of them will be in the county system and get called up from there.

We did last time and it came in pretty handy as Haddin left the tour at one point for family reasons.

The selectors know what they are doing. Hohn makes perfect sense here, when talking about not selecting Maxwell.

Re Pattinson, if he is being considered as the all-rounder, i.e. only a limited number of overs per day, then backing up 25 overs per day after day in the shield is less relevant. If he's bowling well albeit with limited overs, he would be an infinitely better option than MMarsh for example

    Harris
    Burns/Renshaw
    Khawaja
    Head
    Pucovski
    Labuschagne
    Paine
    Cummins
Starc/Siddle (Can see them "resting" Starc)
    Lyon
    Hazlewood

So does that mean Labuschagne is the new MMarsh?

Interesting squad - a bit of a shame that they didn’t take a punt with either Jhye Richardson or Chris Tremain, as I can’t see Siddle really challenging for a spot in England.

My gut feel is that they may choose to play both Burns and Renshaw, with Burns batting at no. 4. Team would therefore look like:

    Renshaw
    Harris
    Usman
    Burns
    Head
    Marnus
    Paine
    Cummins
    Starc
    Lyon
    Hazlewood

This would setup a straight shootout between Harris and Renshaw for the second opener spot behind Warner, and potentially Burns V Marnus for the final batting spot (once Smith comes straight back in). Young Will is hopefully along for the experience, as he isn’t playing T20 at the moment, so he isn’t really missing out on anything. I love seeing young talent come through, but I have some reservations about him at this point. Particularly the fact that he gets hit in the head a lot - he has had 3 retirements due to concussions (although admittedly one was while fielding) in just 8 first class games.

I reckon Siddle might get a gig over there but whether he is first cab off the rank (if they veer from the current trio) remains to be seen.

I'm thinking Burns will get an opening gig above Renshaw on recent performances but then again that would mean Pucovski would be straight in hmmmmm. Your middle order idea for Burns would be interesting too.

Pucovski's concussion drama's go back a long way. He missed 6 months of not only Sport but school as well from a football training accident. He's had some seriously bad luck with that skull of his. He's a big talent.

Pattinson out for the rest of the BBL season with a side strain, so you can put a hold on your talk of him being in a test squad.

Last time i got one i couldn't bowl for 6 weeks and i reckon recovery time wouldn't have changed much. He'll be touch and go for the first Shield game after the BBL but there's four rounds left he should get some games in barring bad luck.

It's certainly dated ODI cricket but the squad reflected that from the outset.

I just don’t get what they are trying to do. They are showing no intent at all - a run-rate of 6 an over is not going to cut the mustard anymore. Perhaps the 1980s outfits have affected their perceptions of what is acceptable. I reckon they are at least 30 runs short of where they should be. Hanscomb has batted pretty well in fairness.

I also feel very sorry for Maxwell - if he even gets a hit there is little that he can achieve.

Tactically, they seem to have decided to just push it around until the 45th over and then slog in the final five. Problem with this approach is that they have left lots of easy runs out there between overs 20-45, and it totally relies on the opposition bowling badly in the final five. India are not stupid, and are bowling full and straight.

To be fair they didn't really pick a team geared at really big scores. I reckon they will add a bit more thrust by world Cup time thru necessity.

The thing that bugs me is more about intent - they just seemed to lack the necessary desire to actually push things forward. We may well win this match (I hope!), but this total appears well short of what would be par. Average score in Sydney in recent years is well over 300.In terms of going forward, other than the return of Warner, I’m not sure who is missing that is going to add much more thrust. If we are looking towards the World Cup, I can’t see us winning too much if we continue with that approach.
