Physical crowds are evidently irrelevant - it is all down to television dollars. JAMODIs are still huge television business, particularly in the sub-continent. Even if they play their matches in the UAE, Pakistan are still getting revenue from the broadcast rights.

The lack of crowds is sad to see though, and I wonder if the very unfortunate events in Christchurch will serve as the catalyst for Pakistan (using the logic that terrorist attacks can happen anywhere) to push for more countries to start touring there again.

Talking of lack of crowds, the Sheffield Shield will be on Foxtel, starting today.

Hopefully it won't be like Shield Finals have turned out to be quite often in the past, where the home team plays for a draw because that is all they need to take the title.

The Dukes ball will be one item of interest though.

Harris has surely done enough to be in the Ashes squad after today. He's scored over 600 runs at an average of 70+ since the Tests with two big tons and two 90's. He's definitely raised his game since playing for Australia.

Not taking Harris would be one of the harshest decisions since they picked Greg Campbell over Mike Whitney in 1989. Like Harris, Whitney was the leading wicket taker in the Shield that season, and was in the Test team in the last Test prior to the touring party being picked. Still, we all know how great of a career Campbell had ....

I remember the Whitney controversy. He bowled well Gower too.

Pattinson and Siddle have skittled the Blues. It will take a mighty effort to come back from but there is loads of time left.

Pattinson was near unplayable with some of the best bowling of the season.

The duke is to try and combat our long term widespread woefulness vs swing, particularly in our poor recent Ashes history in England. It also gives the bowlers a bit of exposure to it as well.

The repeat batting failures over the past few rounds of the Shield show that techniques are still not up to the task of facing a swinging ball. So many of our current generation players have hard hands that push out at the ball, rather than waiting to play it close to the body. If the ball doesn’t move, you can hit through the line with inpunity. But once it starts to move around a bit ...

Another top win last night. What a difference it makes when you find a bit of confidence and things start to turn for you. Pakistan would still be kicking themselves tho, woeful finish vs a fine one. Carey is going a lot better now he's not opening.

Shield final still somewhat live after Victoria lost their last 4 for 14 runs. N.S.W. chasing 388 are 2-152.

Edit - a wicket fell as i typed. Go VIC.

Is he signed up for an English county side? It would be good to see him get some more cricket and keep building the fitness.

I'd take him anyway as it's a long tour but yes some more overs would be great. He's playing County cricket. He's nabbed 17 wickets at 11 since the side strain and his restrictions were lifted two games ago.

The selectors will be prejudiced against him because he is a Victorian, and instead will choose a lesser skilled, project player from NSW or WA for “experience “.

Pattinson is easily among our 4 best pacemen when fit. If his health holds up it's the big 4.

Congrats to the Vics - would have been a travesty if NSW won, as they really don't have a good team. Batting was flimsy, and the bowling also fairly mediocre. Patterson looked a class above today, but that wasn't hard, as his team-mates looked pretty crap. Pattinson also looked a class above - will walk back into the touring party if he remains fit.
