The situation with Pattinson reminds me of the classic 1962 baseball film "Safe at Home!" In which we learn an important lesson about honesty.

I can recall 3 examples of opportunities to withdraw the appeal in international cricket
1) Grant Elliott was run out in an ODI v Eng after a collision with an England fielder I think it was. Then captain Paul Collingwood MBE declined to call them back. Much hang-wringing then ensued.
2) Murali was run out in a test v NZ when he went to congratulate Sangakarra for getting to 100. He completed the run and then immediately went to the other batsman when the ball wasn't dead. Well-known "spirit of cricket" advocate Brendan McCullum was the wicketkeeper who took the bails off. Stephen Fleming was NZ captain at the time. Murali was not recalled. McCullum had prior doing the same thing against Zimbabwe too.
3) Ian Bell was recalled in a game vs India after being run out on the stroke of tea when he wandered out of his crease thinking the ball was dead. I think the recall happened after a lot of fuss was made at the tea interval.
There's been some doozies.
Alvin Kallicharran, 1973-74, West Indies v England, 1st Test, Port of Spain
As Bernard Julien played thelast ball of the day from Derek Underwood, the players turned towards the pavilion and Alan Knott, thewicketkeeper, flicked the bails off. However, Tony Greig, who was fielding atsilly point, noticed that Alvin Kallicharran, the non striker who was on142, was heading off and threw down the stumps at the bowler's end. Withno-one really sure what was happening, Greig appealed and umpire DouglasSang Hu gave Kallicharran out. Many of the crowd had left and wereunaware what had happened, but as the evening went on it became clearthis was a major incident in the making. Common sense prevailed and themanagers agreed that Kallicharran would be reinstated. He went on toscore 158, but Greig's love-hate relationship with Caribbean crowds had beenestablished. (Click here for a Rewind on this incident)
Dean Jones, 1990-91, West Indies v Australia, 2nd Test, Guyana
The "run out" of Dean Jones was a cruel blow to Australiawho faced a deficit of 221 runs. Jones was bowled by Courtney Walsh off a no-ball and, with the batsman unaware of the umpire's call, trudged back to the pavilion. Carl Hooper bounded in from slip, picked up the ball and threw down the middle stump and waspromptly joined by all his team-mates who appealed for the run out. Despite his batting partner, Allan Border, trying to warn him of the impending danger, Jones couldn't get his bat down quick enough - and the square-leg umpire, Cumberbatch, gave him out.

Watching the Thunder v Stars game and Maxwell's issue of soaking up ball when the team needs big shots is apparent again, when we he learn to get a move on. Too much red ball cricket.

For the amount of overs he will bowl Travis would be enough. I feel sorry for handscomb, flat pitch Marsh will score some runs which will be just enough to keep his spot ( just like his brother) and handscomb will be forgotten. Logically there is an argument for marsh, but practically it just isn’t what will happen, if pitch has a bit in it he won’t be needed and probably can’t cope batting . If its a road the sports scientists will restrict him to 10 overs , he wasn’t even working hard in the nett session they showed on tv ,everyone should score runs if it’s a flat track . Can’t wait to hear the excuses if he scores a duck .
Bancroft is a flog, hope he never plays for Australia again.
Why champ?
Yep. So much horseshit, can't even say the words "i cheated" instead it was "the action".
Very glad that I am in London until early in the new year and won’t actually watch the MCG pitch debacle unfold yet again. Low and slow, with nothing for the bowlers, but equally, the batsmen can’t score at a decent rate. The run-rate today was 2.4 per over, which is a continuation of what we have seen recently. For comparison to last year, Australia finished day 1 last year at 3-244 (again, run-rate well under 3 per over) and that was after Warner played a blinder with 103 off 151 balls.
The inclusion of Mitch Marsh makes some sort of sense in a way; lets bowl him into the dust and save the four frontline bowlers for Sydney where there may be some assistance. We really need one of our batsmen to pull out an ‘Alistair Cook’ type of performance and just bat without worrying about runs at all. A number of our top-order wickets last year were from ‘drag-ons’ from outside the stumps, so just play straight and don’t try cross-bat shots. I can’t see us bowling India out (at all really) for less than 500, but that will also probably take them well into day 3. At that point, the draw is the only realistic option for us, so they should look to keep India’s bowlers in the field for the remainder of the match if possible.
The MCG has had one of the worst pitches in the world for a long time, and if the Perth pitch was rated as ‘average’, it sounds like this one should be ‘poor’ at best. The curator has had 12 months to improve things, but clearly not a lot has changed in spite of all their rhetoric before the start - would be fascinating to see what would happen if the MCG lost its right to host matches.

I think Ponting let the cat out of the bag today about who will be the next captain, looks like paine is only a caretaker until the cheat comes back.
