The Cricket Season of 2018/19
With a visiting team actually playing a game in Australia, I think it is appropriate to start the new yearly thread. Those who wish to discuss the Culture Review and other matters from last year can do so in either thread, I would think.
I'm going to start with news of one of the last events of the 18/19 season. I've got a ticket to the first day of the 4th Test of the Ashes in Manchester next September. So that is obviously my next holiday destination. I think I'll order myself a stupid Aussie fancy dress hat for Christmas, just so I'll fit in. Another bucket list item crossed off.
As to what is on my TV right now, it might be a meaningless exhibition one-dayer on a fairly spicy pitch in Canberra, but Dale Steyn still looks like a champion bowler.
A question for my WA cricket expert friend Yossarian. I didn't even know that Phillippe was a keeper. Is he any good? He's made some Shield runs. If he can keep, he could be worth a tour as reserve keeper/bat to see if he has the goods, assuming he keeps making runs.

I have heard less than stellar reports about his keeping ability - he seems to be a similar option as someone like Pete Handscomb in that he is a handy keeper, but not one you would want to rely on across the course of a first-class match. He doesn’t keep on a full-time basis for WA (Josh Inglis has the gloves), but he could be a very useful T20 player.
Congrats on the tickets for the Ashes next year. I was in England back in 2013 and couldn’t get tickets, although that possibly turned out to be a good thing. I’ll be in Glasgow in early August next year, but probably can’t extend my trip to include the First Test.

Basically what Stuart said, bit better than handy handscombe IMO. Is a seriously good bat though.

I'll be watching the Heat games of the Big Bash this summer, but probably not much of the rest.

In terms of the Test matches, I cannot see (I'm a massive pessimist admittedly) just how Australia can beat India this season. Their batting lineup is better than ours (even if Warner and Smith were available) by several magnitudes, while our normal significant advantage in terms of fast bowling isn't as large as we might have expected. This is made even worse by the complete dross that most curators are currently serving up in Australia. Pace and bounce, the traditional key features of most Australian pitches and the one thing that India's top order would struggle with, have pretty much disappeared.
India have never won a Test series in Australia, and if they don't do it this time, you would have to wonder whether they ever will. This is our weakest batting lineup since the Tests against the Kiwis in 1985/86, and at least that team still had one genuine world-class batsman in Border. I would actually say that our potential batting lineup for the First Test (Renshaw, Finch, Marsh (S), Head, Handscomb, Marsh (M) and Paine) to be the equal worst since WWII with some of the Packer-shorn teams of the late 70s (e.g. Wood, Darling, Hughes, Yallop, Toohey, Cosier and Maclean).
I think that our only hope is that one of (or all of) Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood can replicate what Mitch Johnson did in the Ashes and that our batsmen can somehow collectively put enough runs on the board.

I am not as pessimistic, or as time pressed as other so will be watching the tests with interest. Our batters will be better at home (naturally) and our pace battery is better than theirs by some margin. Will be interesting viewing I think, but agree that if they can't win this one it is pretty much never for them.

I will always watch Tests with interest - nothing compares to a great Test match. However, I do also enjoy watching the domestic T20, which I wasn’t really expecting.
The one form of cricket I have lost interest in is the 50 over variety. Way too many meaningless matches played in obscure locations with no context. We have a series starting against South Africa evidently, which seems to serve no purpose at all, other than removing players like Maxwell from the clashing round of Shield matches. The selectors tell Maxwell to go back to first-class cricket and score runs, but then deny him any opportunity to do so by having him play in JAMODIs that no one will remember in a months time. One good thing about Mitch Marsh not playing is that he can hopefully regain some form for WA.
I know you know this, but the casual cricket follower may not realise that India’s fast bowling attack is no longer as toothless as it was back in the day of Venkatesh Prasad etc. They now have a number of guys who can consistently bowl over 140kms (Yadav, Bumrah, Shami) and Kumar is a genuinely skilful swing bowler. While I agree that our quickies are better, particularly in our conditions, the difference in quality is far less than the difference in class between their batsmen and ours.

Fast bowling probably won’t matter anyway, we will probably produce feather bed wickets or spin friendly pitches ( because Lyon is a goat) . Hand any advantage we might gain if we played on fast n hard pitches over to the Indians and wonder why we get our butts kicked ,play them in Perth and Brisbane and juice the pitches up a bit .

Which team is considered the favorite this season? I've been out of the loop for a few months.

Interesting that Marsh was ruled out of the current JAMODI with "an abscess in his buttock region". I assume that this is probably a pilonidal cyst - if they have operated, it will probably rule him out for about 3-4 weeks. That would put him dangerously close to missing the First Test, so Hanscomb's 100 was very timely. However, I would have already had him in the team, so I wonder who is next in line? Almost anyone who gets runs at the moment could be in with a chance.

I'd be giving Head an extended run i think Stuart. They have to pick and stick a little here and there. Pattinson bowled a damn good spell the other day too. The more i look at it the more worried i am - who is going to stand up and play game turning innings? Smith has done it so many times of late and Warner too, more so back a tad further. Others have chipped in big spasmodically but in part at times due to the influence of Warner and Smith. I just don't know if we have guys that can stand tall often enough under the circumstances. Maybe one or two step up. We need Kwaka fit in a big way. I think Maxwell might be cactus with Langer at the helm given what happened with him recently. The series odds are even at present.
The batting line up will depend quite a bit on Shield efforts i think. Lehmann might even get a gig at some point in the series.

You mean Renshaw? That could be our next 10 year + batsman but we seem obsessed with finding ways why he shouldn’t be in the team.

Yeah edited. You're right, the selectors haven't done some guys much good at all the past few years.

Bah, who cares about that bunch of losers.
A real loser was the guy in NZ who has just been taken for 43 off one over, a new record. It's all over the net, and will probably be in papers tomorrow.
Surely the worst feeling a bowler could ever have is having to re-bowl a ball that has been hit for six. If I'm reading it correctly, the guy had gone for 13 runs off one ball, because his two waist high full tosses are both non-counting no-balls.
Personally, I'm looking forward to Shaun Marsh batting in the one-dayer on Friday. If he fails, he'll probably be out of the test team, but if he succeeds, he'll be back in. Unfortunately, M Marsh has already played his way back in.

Good to see a win, but it was hardly a win for the ages. Batting again looked woeful - lots got a start and then failed to go on with it. We really can’t expect our bowlers to save our bacon over and over again (particularly when it is with both bat and ball).
One positive is the bowling of Stoinis. He was bowling in the mid-130s at times, and I would like him to go back to the Shield and score some runs. His bowling looks to be improving, whereas Mitch Marsh’s is going backwards. If Stoinis could regain the form he had with the bat a few seasons back, I would bring him into the side when Mitch fails next.
Agree with TNO’s team - if Usman is available, it will be a toss-up between Hanscomb and Head. Travis is the incumbent, but then again, so is Marcus L. and that doesn’t look like helping his chances.

I think that's close to what the selectors will go for. I have Kwaka, Head and Handscomb all in there. Maybe Shaun being fit might push one out, they do seem keen on him at times.
They will be thinking Ashes i reckon. Given Marshes age and penchant for nicking off at times the English conditions and bowlers might be a stretch for him. Who knows with the selectors at times. Our bowling stocks are so much better than the batting. We have a number of quite decent seamers and swing bowlers to back up the big three and Pattinson if he can remain injury free (touch wood) will be right in there with the top trio. We have a couple of reasonable spinners for back up too.
Stoinis is such a big competitor. Marsh won't have the spot gifted to him long term, he will have to perform.

AP should stay in the closet for now, unless he likes to watch games between two teams with similar weaknesses.
Both us and the Saffers have much better bowling than batting. Which only gets you so far in limited overs. Flat tracks mean the teams who can genuinely bat, who are India and England at the moment, can go hard at the ball and give every one else thrashings.
I have to say that I much prefer a game like last night's, where bowlers have a chance, to the 350+ run fests we often see nowadays.

Agree 100%.
The place I am staying at in Edinburgh has a television channel with literally dozens of ODIs from the 80s and 90s. I have been re-watching them and the average score is around 220-230. Much more interesting to watch a genuine fight between bat and ball.

Really hope all the Australian batsmen play the next Shield round, as they need to get back to basics.
Finch and Head both look totally out of form and Head in particular looks to be lacking confidence. If one of the peripheral players scores big in this round, and Head fails, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Head miss out.

If Burns and Renshaw get some runs i'd probably have both in somewhere. Both got some reasonable runs last game. Might have to be a pick and stick series batting wise, or close to it.
