I hope there is something decent on some of the other channels to watch . Am over this crap already . Bowlers get us into the match our batsmen get to see how to not play on this wicket and how to bat courtesy of the Indians , then bat us out of the match , some terrible shots to get out on .

Did the Bowlers really get the Aussies into the Match? They started very well but let is slip in the last session to turn a great first day into only a good one.

That’s probably true , at 250 we were further in it than if we bowled crap and presented kohli with a century. At 1 for 0 after 3 balls a collapse was on the cards , I feel sorry for the bowlers they have a very disheartening summer ahead of them .

    Yep.

Who would have predicted that Warnie’s latest Victorian love child would get out driving early without getting to the pitch of the ball? Still, at least we passed the follow on-mark.

I also have to give Head credit. He has battled hard and shown some guts. Shame that Usman and Hanscomb couldn’t also stick with him for a bit longer. If Australia can creep close to parity, and then the bowlers do a really stunning job in the second innings, it could make for an interesting match. I can’t see Australia chasing down anything above probably 150, but it could be the making of this side if they pull off a surprise victory.

Langer must have pooed his pants when finch went for a big drive and had his stumps uprooted third ball . I wil give hanscomb some credit he showed some test match grit until that waft outside off stump . Head was batting smart getting singles and getting off strike . All the batsmen need to knuckle down value their wicket and make the bowlers work hard to get them out . Have to stop handing them there wicket cheaply.

Surprised to hear the talk that they now want to move Finch down the order - if he isn’t going to play as an opener, why is he even there at all? It’s not like he has put together a stack of runs in first-class cricket over the years, and at age 32, I can’t see him improving greatly.

Why create another problem by moving Usman, who is our best option at no. 3, to open. Who is going to bat at no. 3? Much of this problem has come around due to Langer pushing so hard for his pet last year and the selectors not showing faith in Renshaw and killing his confidence.

Need to pick an opener who can stick around and can build an innings , why they took renshaw then didn’t play him . Finch is great in shorter forms but red ball he needs to be patient wait for the bad ball . My batting order would be usman 3 handscom 4 head 5 maxwell 6 . Give them last 3 tests . I would suggest to maxwell he switches his bowling to medium pace cutters , to me he is trying to bowl off spin with a pace bowling delivery stride and action . Bowl to tie up an end for 10 overs one run an over type stuff , be much more useful and put an end to marsh .

Simon Katich banged on heaps about Finch batting at 5 well before this game. Mind you he also had Renshaw opening. Renshaw's natural calm and patience would be good for this team but as you say he's taken a bit of a hit. I can't see how Finch is a better opening option than Burns either. If i had Finch in it would be down the order.

Crazy as it seems Matthew Wade might be close to sneaking into selection room conversations as a specialist bat at present. Sadly he'd be a safer and more proven bet than almost every other candidate. I doubt it would ever happen but he's being going ok and i can't stand the guy. His behavior would certainly not be what they are looking to promote.

We've got to be looking at the Ashes right now and Finch opening in those conditions doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. Hopefully he and some others bounce back hard.

I have mentioned before my concerns about Burns' technique, but agree that he is a far better option than Finch as an opener. I equally cannot stand Wade* but agree that he is possibly worth a go. His form this season has been the best of anyone, and, he actually bowls some pretty handy medium pace that could take the pressure of getting Mitch Marsh back into the side.

The suggestion around Maxwell is a not-unreasonable one either. He fundamentally has a solid technique; its just his cricketing brain that is lacking. A bit like India's Rohit in many ways.

    * Nevill is one of the unluckiest cricketers in recent history - he got dropped, while still keeping very well, for not displaying exactly the type of behaviour that we are now trying to stamp out. In a parallel universe, Nevill had selectors with more of a brain and is actually captain of Australia rather than Paine.

I didn't see much of today's play, so I can't really comment on it.

But I can observe that you can't pick everybody, and you shouldn't keep picking guys who have no record at test level. So I do not support any suggestion to bring back Maxwell or Wade. Joe Burns, on the other hand, does have a reasonable record in Australia, so he may well get another go.

I do wish we had a batsman as good as Kane Williamson though. He made one of the best tons you could ever see against Yasir Shah yesterday.

While I don't quite wish we could pick Ellyse Perry, she just made one of the best tons you could ever see at Womens 20/20 level.

That sort of stiff policy would have never allowed the resurrection of Matthew Hayden and one of the great Test careers. Maxwell has had about the same number of Tests as Hayden did in his first incarnation. The same goes for Damien Martyn who also had a great Test career and both of these guys featured heavily in our incredible Test cricket run. There are countless other examples.

What Wade did batting while also having the burden of wicket-keeping could well be different to what he does as a pure batsman. As Stuart mentioned he has those handy medium pacers too.

*Interesting assessment. I think his batting hurt him as much as anything. He was on a pretty bad trot despite scoring a fitty late in the peace. Paine is scoring quite steadily but without the bigger scores the selectors would love. They would crave Carey finding some consistently better form with the bat in first class cricket.

Paine's shelf life will be interesting. They would know exactly when they want to transition but again there's not much going on elsewhere and Paine is keeping superbly, batting reasonably well and looking after the public image concerns for them. When push comes to shove and winning comes more to the forefront again (it equals bums on seats and better revenue among other things) it will get interesting. I'm a big fan tho and very happy to see him getting his day in the sun against all odds. If he keeps playing well there's just nobody pushing him at present. That will have to change at some point we'd hope.

With any luck the current guys will find their mojo and get things done. Time will tell and it's early days. We need to win the first session tomorrow. India may not be giving away top order wickets quite so easily tomorrow.

Very happy with Paine for the time being - quite inspired choice by the selectors in hindsight. Nevill’s batting wasn’t great, but he equally seemed to be a scapegoat for batting order (Marsh brothers etc) not doing their job. I still think he is the equal of anyone in the country with the gloves, but sadly his time has now been and gone.

Carey does look to be the anointed one, but so did Paine more than a decade ago, so it is hard to predict what will happen if Paine continues performing for another few years. The next long-term keeper for Australia may not yet be playing in first-class cricket, as there are a few younger guys who could come through suddenly and take their chance.

Think I saw that Renshaw made a triple ton in grade cricket the other day. Surely at some point he gets another look in, as should Maxwell. The Maxwell situation makes me think of Dean Jones, it would be a shame if history repeated itself like that again.

Damn - Lyon was looking good then and narrowing the deficit quite rapidly.

Not a good day for us. At one stage we looked like knocking over the deficit before losing two wickets in two balls. We bowled really well for stretches and Lyon probed beautifully but the Indians batted well and are now in the box seat. The Indians overall grit it out so much better than us and it comes far more naturally. Our guys more just shut up shop in the first innings (apart from Head as he progressed) vs battening down but still hitting the loose ball and finding some singles. Something is wrong with Starc and he's well below his best. We need a helluva lot to go our way tomorrow.

Good summation. India look like they have almost already got enough of a lead - anything over 200 in the fourth innings looks out of reach to be honest. While the pitch isn’t deteriorating enough to make batting particularly difficult, the simple pressure of chasing on this very inexperienced (and, to be honest, pretty poor) Australian batting order will make any total far bigger than pure numbers may suggest. The biggest issue I see is that the Indian batsmen are simply WAY better than ours. While our bowling attack is better than theirs (in our conditions), the difference in class between the two batting orders is far greater than the difference between the bowling attacks. In such situations, I would always want to see very sporting green tops - crap pitches can assist to even out such differences. Unlikely to happen this series though. I do hold out some hope that the 2nd Test may have more bounce than previous WA matches, which would cause the Indian front-foot lungers some big problems. Problem is, our batsmen probably wouldn’t do much better ...

There is s solid difference for sure in the batting lineups. That would be well and truly negated minus the bans of course. We will have to bat out of our skin like in the 4th innings in the UAE recently if India do much of anything from here. Our batting depth has been terrible for ages now and the bans certainly reinforced that not that anyone wasn't aware. We actually lost a lot of what we need when Buck Rogers retired. Compounding that was the treatment of Reynolds who was looking to be a decent long term replacement.
