Now would be a pretty good time for Shaun Marsh to repay the selectors for their unwavering faith in his abilities. He and Kwaka are easily our most experienced bats and we need them to lead from the front and make a difference this series with Smith and Warner out. Marsh has been in excellent form (even allowing for the last outing duck) and now's the time to step up if he's ever going to.

Our batting is potentially very brittle and we badly need someone to set the tone and lead by example. Hopefully Mitch finds his form from the last home series and he's got a bit of competition with Stoinis looking like he might be on the improve. Finch's first class average as an opener is poor (tho he could rise), Harris is inexperienced, Head not in the best form and Paine more handy than match winning. Our bowling is awesome and hopefully being at home helps our batting in no small way.

Well there you go, Mitch Marsh left out in favour of Handscomb - was not expecting the selectors to show that amount of common sense. The batting order looks (slightly) more solid, and if they bat Handscomb at no. 5 and Head at no. 6, it breaks up the run of left handers.

Stoinis now has a good chance to get.a Test call up with a few solid performances with bat and ball. Mitch will have to (hopefully) bang the door down with both disciplines before they go back to him. As an all rounder, he has genuine potential but simply doesn’t bowl enough overs to overcome his inconsistency and underperformance with the blade.

Really, if Head and Handscomb go well, I don't think Mitch will be back. He had his chance (a number of times), and didn't take it. Of course, in saying that I'm assuming the other bats will actually score some runs. Which is a big assumption.

I've never been a fan of the medium pace all-rounder theory. I'm not sure Stoinis is the answer either. I'd prefer the best six batsmen to be picked.

The other big topic of interest for me will be Channel 7. Apparently they are going with a different commentary model, a ball by ball person supported by experts. Tomorrow is the big day. I might even watch with the sound turned on, just to see if it is worthwhile.

Mitchell Marsh is a no talent retard. His only benefit to the team would be licking the bus windows clean. Must never play for our country again.

One Marsh gone, how long will it be before the other one follows?
Not soon enough I would suggest.
Will probably make 50 in the first test that will see him last the summer.
Would be too much to ask for the selectors to make two rational decisions in one season!

Until there’s a better option than the remaining Marsh, he should stay. They need to pick and stick for a while.

I got offered tickets for the Corporate Box Sat or Sun but can't get excited enough about the game to take the offer.
I have no interest watching India make a pile of runs or the Aussies make FA then paying for transport to get there and home after a few too many drinks.
Being able to walk away from the TV and do something else if the games boring is far too attractive.

You are all forgetting that the Aussie bowling attack is still one of if not the best in world cricket. Losing this toss has been a blessing in disguise because now the Indians are under the pump for the whole game (unless this partnership becomes something record breaking)

I also think the Shaun Marsh hating is a bit tainted by his brother. Shaun’s issue has been that the minute he starts to show why he was picked in the first place, a hammy goes ping. Of the batsmen, him and Khawaja are the ones the rest of the batting lineup should be built around right now. Is it as good as the batting line up from years ago? Hell no, but it’s the right selections given who is available to pick from

Marsh's problem is single figure scores. He's had a whopping 25 scores in single figures in 61 innings. That's not far off half. In his last 9 bats he's seven scores of 7 and under with a high of 26.

The shame of it all is that when he's on, even at Test level, he is mighty impressive. In S.A. in 2014 he scored a magnificent 148 in the first innings of the first Test against the might of Steyn, Philander and co and along with Smith helped set the tone for the game. Scored a handy 44 in the second dig too. In the next game he bagged a pair, facing just 3 balls in total.

He did however have a superb series against England last time out here and was quite consistent. Hopefully he can back that up this series.

Totally agree he should be there as no-one is overly putting their hand up.

We let them get away from us in that last session. Starc bowled woefully where as he is normally devastating against the tail with a new ball. An appeal on Pujara's edge off Hazelwood would have made a big difference still.

Interesting first day - would have liked to see Australia knock them over for less than 200 after that start, but equally I would have taken 9-250 when India won the toss.

More grass on the track than the traditional old bowlers’ graveyard in Adelaide is great to see, and we’ll need to wait until both teams have batted to work out how good India’s first innings score actually is. The current curator (Damien Hough) at the Oval deserves massive credit for this change - he took over from Les Burdett who was supposedly the best curator in Australia, but that rating was from the ‘batsmen media mafia’ as he constantly produced woeful tracks that batsmen had to be prised out with a jackhammer. Hough has turned it into possibly the best pitch in the country.

I suspect that Australia will struggle to match India’s score unless Usman or Marsh can do something similar to Pujara in terms of simply occupying the crease all day and the rest bat around them.

Marsh's problem (goes for both of them) is that he isn't any good. When you've been gifted 35 Tests and still cant average more than 36, you aren't up to Test standard.

At least he should be able to improve on his average against India though - a whopping 21. Maybe he has swallowed so much of Langers load that it is effecting his balance and concentration?

Not sure that is fair. Finch is just a very very average red ball player.
