If you can show me how LGN is strategic, and the terms of what you define strategic as, I am all ears.
I can't be bothered breaking it down hole by hole the way you did Benno so I guess that probably doesn't help my argument. But I did see a lot of players hitting different shots and taking different options at LGN. I guess that's too much of a general statement but like I said, I don't have the time (or the inclination to be honest) to break it down.

Cheers mate. Was lucky enough to have a few up the sleeve and kinda coasted through the final round.

Knowing the ability level of the person making the argument can sometime shed light on the validity of their opinion. Only sometimes though.

Not sure if I’ve shared this. They’re a bit long but the conversations are centred around two of the best examples of golf course architecture literature. These guys are so much better at explaining certain points than I am.

    Default Understanding Strategic Golf Design

“People come in and their opinions are solely based on their own experiences...”

“...need to read some of these books and understand that these ideas have been developed over 100 plus years...”

    Another cracker.

“...they love the experience they have but that’s a very subjective and personal thing. If you’re wowed by the reputation of the club or the grandeur of the club house....you’re bound to love that course...”

Not yet. Only halfway through the second one. However this was just said...

“...the worst kind is the member who has no idea of what golf is about but is only a member of the club for the prestige status attached to it..”

Or the quality of the elevator in the underground carpark.

When I was living in Melbourne and playing pennant tennis, I played doubles against this old bloke who was a member of Huntingdale

During conversations he would bring up the fact he was a member at every possible opportunity. In an entire afternoon he raised the topic about 7 times almost as if he was asking to be acknowledged for his exclusive membership

No one (including me at the time) played golf and we really didn't give a toss about any of club house topics he raised.

For a lot of people it feels like the status of a club membership alone sits well above the playing experience

I played one of the strongest examples of strategic golf today.

    Key points:

The place is so wide you can literally hit it anywhere and find it to hit it again

Depending on the pin you absolutely need to be in the correct side of the fairway otherwise you’re dead.

The only bunker I got it in all day resulted in my only double bogey.

On the front 9 (downwind) I was through every green and 3 putted most of them, on the back 9 (headwind) I never went over the back once and came up short only twice. The score difference between each nine was the opposite of what you’d expect.

I had so much fun you would be hard pressed to wipe the smile off my face. Not because of where I am (not entirely at least) but because the entire time I was thinking of this thread and how much the basic principles just jump out at you on every single shot.

Cinderella story, out of nowhere, former greenskeeper, now about to become a Masters champion..... It looks like a mirac.. It's in the hole! It's in the hole!
