Default Mt Compass, Saturday October 27 12:00 noon (Peppas visit)

    Hello SAnkers,

As previously discussed our next installment takes us to the much improved Mount Compass GC (formerly known as Fleurieu GC).

Course has confirmed there will be no coring (anytime this year, interesting), so we should expect the course to be cherry ripe considering the time of year.

I have booked two groups, with the first tee off commencing @ 12noon, hopefully from the back plates (as IMO the course seems to play so much better from the tips)

The local GL comp closes @ 11AM so no luck there however 'Chris' has noted we can play in the Sunday / Mon / Tuesday comp if anybody wishes to for a small fee

Perhaps we should fight it out in our own in-house comp for the red jacket (ala 'mini champs'), lets see how the numbers pan out first

Green Fee (excluding any comps) sits @ $45 per person

    1. Peppas
    2. TC
    3. Wazamac
    4. Hatchy Fancypants
    5. HP
    6. Coalesce (Very dark pencil)
    7. Nadg (9 holes only, joining group from 10th tee)

Will decide on groups tomorrow along with any games

What sort of weird stuff did you get up to over there? I was expecting being a couple of inches shorter to be the main concern

perhaps we can stop for lunch after 9 holes (and wait for Nadg)
We would be bettor off having diner there rather than trying to cram a mid round lunch in?
I can do either and am happy to go with what the masses think?

You wont make diner in city if we stop for lunch.
Without stopping Mount Compass can be a longish walk and is a 4hr round if not spending lots of time looking for balls in the Boonge. It's the height of snake season atm too so walks in deep Boonge are ill advised.
I can bring Peppas back to the City if your pressed for time TC.

I'm happy to play it by ear. If we are done earlyish we can have a drink after. If late I can stay for dinner. Just need to check if I have to meet any workmates for dinner as well but I don't think I will know until tomorrow either...

I don't remember goonge, just lots of yumyums

I can’t do dinner either. I figured with the tee time it wouldn’t work for either lunch or dinner so was planning on getting a pie on the way!

Course was in top condition, best it’s ever been, fairways were cut tight and fast like a links course, greens played better as well, I felt more of the slopes came into play than normal, course is starting to show it’s teeth now it’s been maintained properly.

Will make a fantastic champs Saturday round if presented like that

Thanks for the round everyone, it was great to catch up with you all. Special shout outs to thecollective for the lift and hatchy for the lend of the clubs.

I really enjoyed Mt Compass. Still think it's a great layout, and the greens were quick! It's come a long way since I first played it years ago.

Thanks all for the hit. Good to Catch up with Peppas. Hope you dazzled them with your presentation
Course is in the best condition I've ever seen it. Taking out one tree and chopping the others back on the left hand side of 18 has made it a really good finishing hole now. You can finally play a normal golf shot into the green.
Greens were sneaky quick and I could not get the pace all day.
Played a 3/4 9 iron into the 16th and had something happen I've never seen before. Ball pitched on the down slope and spun back up the slope from the tour jizz leaving the ball 2 foot behind it's pitch mark.

Was great to watch from the 17th tee, sadly I only caught a glimpse of it going in, love that 16th hole; a real exciting 2nd shot risk reward over the shrub/goonge, I have made it in 2 before but sadly caught my 3 wood a tad heavy blocking it into the middle of the dogleg, my pitch was that really hard 60 metre range, had to be spot on and just landed it half a metre short.

I feel like the course has had its teeth cleaned, particularly around the greens. The contouring feels more severe now making the execution all that more important

Im already contemplating a trip back there in the coming weeks, for $50 the place just rocks big time, so much fun to play now

    Yep. Gravity defying!

I agree, the course was in great nick and the weather was marvelous. I started off OK and had some flourishes later in the day but coming from Royal North Haven, the speed of those greens just got to me. Especially my attempted chip on the 14th.. I'm three feet off the green but about 40 from the pin. Knowing the ball was going to go, I tense up too much and stub my chip two feet. The ball teeters for a second or two and then gathers more and more momentum before rolling 12 feet past the pin.

The 18th is so much better with the tree at 7 o'clock gone. As stated above, the green is really accessible now.

Had a lot of fun and great seeing Peppas again. Cheers fellas!

are you referring to #15 - the par 5 double dogleg or #16 - the par 4 with the green that slopes down from front to back?

    I think it is #15 isn't it?

like Hatch said, that 18th hole is so much better with a tree removed

looks like #10 has had some shrub trimmed, still plays awkward up the hill. Do something with this hole and you have 18 good ones

#2 has had the bailout extended on the LHS, more chipping area to a difficult green, #3 has had lots of shrub removed from the 150 marker in to green, I assume the remaining trees are there to protect the house, wonder how this hole would play with the tee boxed moved next to the pond?

I should. I'm having Christmas lunch with the owner of Mt Compass this year. He has done a good job with the course.
