    Default 2018 US Open

I'm currently watching the replay of DJ's US Open at Oakmont. No doubt there will be controversy at some point, so we had best have a separate thread to talk about it. Hopefully that controversy won't be about the rules.

I am also hoping the controversy won't be about the course and its set up. I recall the last US Open at Shinnecock in 2004, with the greens being so firm that it was impossible for the ball to stay on the 7th green.

I've read two quite different previews so far. One suggested Shinnecock doesn't favour any type of player. After all, Corey Pavin won there. But the other expert analysis suggested the course is so long, and the rough is deep that a super bomber who drives it straight is by far the most likely type of player to win. So who knows?

I don't know, but I'll have a go at predicting it anyway.

I already have money on Justin Thomas, I'm going to put some money on DJ, and probably Jason Day as well. I'm looking for a Shane Lowry style dark horse to threaten at big odds and hang on for a top five. Just as I type this, Scott Piercy appears on my TV screen. So, he's my big odds guy.

No fairy tale from Tiger for me. All the indicators are that the course is so difficult that players with a driver accuracy problem aren't going to enjoy their week.

DJ for mine, I got $10.50 at Ladbrokes last night.

He is extremely confident after last weeks win, insanely long and straight, and will be hitting 2 clubs less than everyone else all day.

Looking at a couple of others for a top 10, but like Branden Grace.

Jim, what course doesn't favour a guy who hits is straight and long.

On the evidence of the first round scores, Shinnecock in the breeze is one of them. I will add most of the British Open courses when the wind blows, and perhaps NSW and the Melbourne Sand Belt classics. For most of those places, the second shot is more important than the drive.

Some may note that I said 'on the evidence of the scores'. I say this because on the Fox coverage, all they showed of most of the players was them putting, usually a lengthy par effort. You didn't see how they got there or where they went wrong on the way to the green.

The commentators were saying that the weather (and the wind strength) was predicted to be at its worst yesterday, and things would get easier. The players will hope so.

I'm not sure anybody will be under par at the end, particularly if the pin placements are as difficult for the rest of the days, regardless of whether the wind blows or not. Go DJ, and Go Scott Piercy. I think my other bets are dead already.

This US Open is kind of interesting to me, back to a ‘traditional’ US Open Course that has been widened and fairly significantly changed since they were last here. Very similar in scope to Erin Hills and Chambers Bay given that Coore and Crenshaw tidied the place up.

They have brought the rough in for the event on 5-6 holes some 5-10m, some on both sides and some on just the ideal line.

The 18th green looks to be a diabolical test looking at the aimpoint books. Are they going to have the pin in 1 spot all week??

Looking forward to it. I heard someone say they were looking forward to carnage after last year.... I just want to see good golf. After all par is arbitrary and in the end the guy with the least number of shots wins.
