The PGA had better get some photos of him now or they’ll have nothing to put on social media for the weekend

Mate of mine had Scott Piercey and Poulter for low round of R1 and he won on both bets. How utterly random!

On the evidence of the first round scores, Shinnecock in the breeze is one of them. I will add most of the British Open courses when the wind blows, and perhaps NSW and the Melbourne Sand Belt classics. For most of those places, the second shot is more important than the drive.

Some may note that I said 'on the evidence of the scores'. I say this because on the Fox coverage, all they showed of most of the players was them putting, usually a lengthy par effort. You didn't see how they got there or where they went wrong on the way to the green.

The commentators were saying that the weather (and the wind strength) was predicted to be at its worst yesterday, and things would get easier. The players will hope so.

I'm not sure anybody will be under par at the end, particularly if the pin placements are as difficult for the rest of the days, regardless of whether the wind blows or not. Go DJ, and Go Scott Piercy. I think my other bets are dead already.

Courty and I discussed it today, the difference between Open courses and US ones are that in perfect weather the Open is gettable whereas the US modus operandi is to be extremely difficult regardless in case it is perfect.

2010 Open is a perfect example. Rory shot 63 in round one in the calm conditions and round two had 80+ from memory.

I think the guys that shot -1 to around +2 showed extreme restraint to not be attacking and limited their mistakes which IMO is great golf given the conditions.

More carnage today and the usual suuply of muppetts shouting out Mashed Potatoes and Baba Booey after a tee shot.

New York crowds, eh. It's about as funny as yelling 'Taxi!' every time someone bumps a drink.

I've heard a lot of ill-natured heckling and laughing from the crowd for just missed putts, too.

Surely Phil has to be DQ'd for intentionally hitting a moving ball on the green. What a joke to only receive a 2 stroke penalty. What if he was putting down the hill at Sawgrass on 17 and knew it would go in the water.....just run up and hit it in the hole as it's moving past the cup? Winner! Only costs 2 shots which is a better outcome than the ball going for a swim.

Phil didn’t do it for score, Phil did it as a jab at the USPGA for the way the setup the course.

A few golfers have been saying that they lost the course and that’s Phil’s not so subtle way of saying he doesn’t give a ****.

And if he did run up and tap it in as you stated it’s a 3 shot exercise where he could just replay from where he last played from in your Sawgrass example for 1 stroke.

Not that I've watched any of it, but while I don't mind seeing a course set up hard, I don't see the point in making pro's seem like amateurs either! I mean, someone shoots +7 and is equal leader? Is it a problem that regular courses are been set too easy and so the divide between majors and regular tournaments is too far? Me, I wouldn't get any joy out of watching pro's hack it around.

The big issue was the course was totally different for the afternoon field, not how hard it was per se. The USGA have admitted as much. They misread the potential impact of the wind.

As to Phil, it was a bit comical, but not as much as some of the outright indignation coming from some quarters. Beef thought it was pretty funny, actually.

It should be about heavily penalising crooked shots and rewarding straight ones. No need to trick it up too much. Having said that, they are still a bunch of sooks. At my course there's at least 2 holes where the holes are cut on slopes worse than what these guys are whingeing about. If you're above the hole you're screwed.

I generally agree, goughy, and Thursday and Friday were like that: good shots were rewarded but bad shots were punished HARD. Most of the players were pretty happy with the setup I think.

Today was a bit different though, and a lot of well-executed shots not only went unrewarded but were sometimes outrightly punished. And brutally.

It'll be interesting to see what tomorrow brings.

The USGA lost the course and have admitted as such.

Having to water the greens in between groups is an absolute joke.

It’s a good thing they aren’t playing at Rodent’s home track or things might have really got out of hand.
