Default Course Closures - Another one bites the dust

Gold Creek Country Club - the owners are now proposing to close the back 9 and infill. This will be somewhat unpopular to the rows of $2-3m houses that had golf course frontage, looking over to the Brindabella mountains 20k away. I suspect its an ambit claim to eventually settle to 'meeting community expectations and desires' and instead get approval to redevelop the driving range and 3 now closed practice holes.

Yowani Country Club - Development application approval signs to lose 20% of their available land and build a more compact, shorter course with a relocated clubhouse. Not sure where they will fit it in but the club is heading towards insolvency without it.

    I've played both of those.

Some places seem to have too many golf courses, but I didn't think Canberra had too many per capita. What do you reckon, benno?

400,000ish people, a significant transient population.

Two high quality private - Royal, Federal.
Two mid quality semi-private - Gold Creek, Yowani.
Then you have GL, Belconnen, Murrumbidgee, RMC, Queanbeyan - members courses with significant public access
    Public - Capital, Fairbairn

We have already lost a dodgy 9 holer at Goolabri, and membership costs have dropped at Gold Creek and Yowani in the last decade to maintain membership, rather than gently risen to meet increased costs.

I wouldn't say we have too many, but to lose both would be disastrous. I'm hearing the Federal is also struggling to keep their heads above water after failing to get DA approval for unused land for the last 10 years plus.

I know GL can't fill a timesheet of 150 for a monthly medal, and membership is down about 20%. And that's not great - we are just 'lucky' we have a mini casino that funds the Ainslie Football group, and partially the golf club keeping everything alive.

Elsternwick has been on the cards for a while - aren't they closing it to turn it into playing fields and the like?

I played there maybe 15 years ago. It was appalling from memory.

Elsternwick is a shithole and can't close quickly enough.

Really like Yowani...that news is disappointing.

The closure of golf courses only serves to make remaining courses more expensive

    I tend to agree.

I would suggest the lack of ongoing lower membership numbers, even with relative deflation in cost of playing, suggests the market is saturated.

I guess if it's privately owned, they have the right to do what they like with the land with Council permission, just like any land owner. Would be a shame if they did something that was against the wider community though so will be interesting to see how this plays out. May be a slow burn though..........

Land in Canberra is on rolling leases. Nobody owns the land, and the leases are very specific in permitted usage. The wogs took over the concessional lease for peanuts, developed and sold off the easy bits which were on different lease conditions. Now there are rows of $3m houses that are going to lose their golf course frontage and spectacular views. A massive class action is already being prepared.

Fair enough. Not sure their ethnic background has anything to do with it, but there's obvioulsy going to be a fair bit of emotional back and forth over this one and it doesn't look like there will be an easy resolution. Someone's going to end up unhappy in the end (people are clearly already annoyed about it) and I doubt it will be the Konstantinou Group.

There could be some major changes in the wind here at Half Moon Bay. Apparently the boat ramp at Yorkeys Knob isn't big enough and so Queensland Transport are considering putting in another at the Half Moon Bay marina.

The problem with this is that to do what is being proposed means HMB will lose a large chunk of the 14th hole which runs along the beach near the Marina. It's possible the entire hole could go once you factor in car parking facilities and road access.

HMB is already a short course and the club doesn't have the space or financial capacity to reconfigure the course to keep it as an 18 hole layout. Needless to say petitions to the local state member and the Minister for Transport have been lodged asking them to consider other options for the site of the boat ramp.

If it does go ahead as planned then it is quite possible that HMB will not retain the current levels of membership and could end up biting the dust.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

Shame, I didn't mind KL as public course. Mind you i played it prob 3 years ago so not sure if the condition has deteriorated since.

Decent length and good bunkering and a fair bit of water made it a testing course.
