Missed you all the same...
go you brilliant Crow boys!
Let me share with the Ozgolf community my experience and observations of AFL following the viewing of part of the Geelong v Carlton game last night.
I will preface my comments by saying this is not a rant designed to denigrate AFL in favour of Rugby League, mainly because League shares some of the same problems.
Anyway...the Clubtab area of the RSL was taken over by a group of grey nomads, who were quickly revealed as Geelong supporters. The big screen in the TAB had the AFL game on it, so I could only throw away my money by watching the dogs on the smaller screen. I had no choice but to watch much of the 2nd and 3rd quarters while watching the races.
The game itself was just terrible. The ball spent far more time on the ground than it did in the air or in a player's possession. It was plain to me that a primary objective of the team without the ball was to tie the ball up and force a ball-up, or even better, to get the benefit of a free kick. The consequence of this tactic was to turn the game into under 8's, with about 30 players within 20 metres of the ball.
It was also plain to me that the players will exploit the weaknesses of the rules if they possibly can, and will try to slow down the game if they possibly can. In this respect League has exactly the same problem. Rules designed to speed up the game are actually slowing it down because the defending players aren't playing by those rules if they can get away with it.
The other observation I made is that these AFL supporters are no different to a lot of League supporters. They don't fully understand the rules, and spend half their barracking energy bagging the umpires. The other half of their energy they spend by bagging their own team's players.
I'm not an AFL follower, and I have no idea whether this game was typical, or whether it was simply a poor example, but if this is what is served up on a regular basis, AFL will never succeed as a spectator sport in areas where it doesn't have a traditional tribal following.

Tldr.
With Carlton involved, it may have been a shitty game. The more professional the game has got the more coaches have dictated the direction that the game has gone, which is a bit of what you saw, despite the players skills now being better than what they have ever been.
To add something substantive. Carlton do have a tendency to set up to "not lose" the game. Can turn it into a bit of a slog especially as it looked a bit cold/dewy from the brief minutes that I saw.
