I'm a bit puzzled in trying to assess the play so far.
When Stoneman and Vince were batting in the first innings the pitch looked quite benign, and as they say, chock full of runs for good players. The rest of the Poms didn't do much, but apart from Lyon our bowling was nothing special.
Then we batted poorly, except for Smith and Marsh last evening, and then Smith and Cummins today. I still didn't see any demons in the wicket, and the new ball was the only real threat to the batsmen all day.
So, does it mean the pitch was a bit more difficult than I think, the bowling of both attacks is better than I thought, or is Steve Smith the only genuine test class batsman in either team.
Whatever the answers, Steve Smith was several classes above any of the rest. If I was the Poms I'd be tempted to do a Tonya Harding on him.
The other thing I'll observe at this point is that it is about time Handscomb made some runs. With Maxy making a double, it will be hard to keep him out for too long, so if Marsh makes runs again Handscomb might be under the microscope. Or Maxwell may just have to wait until Marsh is unfit again.
"There are 50 things to remember in the golf swing. Trouble is that I can only remember 49 of them" - Bob Hope.
The pitch is extremely hard to score on as evidenced by the low run rate both teams have put forth Jim. Further evidence is that this was Smith's slowest ever Test century for Australia out of many. He decided very early to shelve many attacking shots and grind it out.
Smith is a class above any bat on the planet in Tests. The way he summed up the situation early and batted accordingly including upping the ante when the time was right showed what a great batsman he is, not to mention competitor.
i would hope Handscomb is safe for some time. His last 6 Test scores in Australia are 105, 35*, 54, 110, 40* and 14. Despite a toughish run oversea's he averages over 50 in Test cricket and has been earmarked as a long term Test player.
Maxwell should have been in the initial squad but Marsh's 50 was a very good one and Maxwell should have benefited enormously from that big double.
We badly need stability in the selections. They have some room to move for Maxwell if need be after the first two tests due to the flexibility of Marsh and Bancroft.

Matt Renshaw averages 63 in Australia, and face plenty of balls in India. That didn't do him much good. So who knows how safe Handscomb is with the selectors.

To me Bancroft was thrown to the wolves , picked to open at the Gabba , faced the first ball and seemed to be left on strike, warner should have taken most of the strike and protected him a bit until he settled down . Renshaw should have got the first test anyway
Lol wot. Left on strike???
Yeah that's ok but then get off strike and leave it to warner , he is the senior partner , best way to settle your nerves is to watch from the other end . Even blind Freddie could see he was nervous and would be jumpy .Second innings he is doing fine cause he has now settled , all I am saying is they could have done it better in the first innings

No I am not , I am arguing appeances , it seemed to me he was very nervous and all the commentators said the same , maybe he wasn't or told warner he was fine , what I am saying is it seemed he was nervous and jumpy and that's to be expected and that others could have done more to help him . The shot he played to get out he didn't need to push at that and it was probably nerves that caused him to play at it

Sounds like a media blowup over nothing.
Gee if Bancroft looks nervous, what does that make Smith?
