Is it a certain couple of holes giving you grief?

Honestly, no. Although one hole I don’t get a shot on is giving me a bit of grief. I think it’s just taking me a while to get into my round. The 1 and 2 I mentioned were at my last course. 3 and last round are at my new club.

Sandstone Open day yesterday, 27 holes stableford. Came in with a 23, 17 and a 16 on each 9. First 18 holes didn't wipe a hole and finished with a 92 off the stick for a stroke nett of 66. Finished the day as nett runner up, 3 pts behind the winner. Won the longest drive thanks to a handy gust of wind while teeing off with my 1 iron. So all in all was a pretty good day. Didn't pull the driver out of the bag till the second last hole, just focused on hitting the fairways using my 1 and 3 irons. Bought myself a Cleveland smart sole chipper last week and yesterdays trial proved it to be a handy addition to the bag for out here on the desert courses for approaches 100m or less

I think I will do a 3puttpete style report of my 5 games in 5 days at the Qld Champs.

    24, 30, 29, 30, 30.

There may be more to say later and in other threads, but I am too tired to say stuff now.

I could have used 84 in the first round at Gordonvale as it was a stroke round.

    Good inconsistent consistent golf Courty.

+1 in a Par Round 77/9/68, Front Nine was ruined by a triple on the 9th, but recovered ok on the Back nine to shoot 1 over.

35 Points today. Awful 14 on the front after a chip in birdie on the first. Walked into a low branch on a tree on 9, must have knocked some sense into me. 21 Points coming home. Finally played a solid 9. Hopefully playing a solid 18 is not far away.

    Nice result Steve.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

Last week, I had 5 rounds at the Qld OZgolf Championships. With a handicap of six, and not really playing golf anymore, I was just going to the event to enjoy myself, and I well and truly succeeded in that. Golf is so much better without expectations, and although this is something I tried to do when I was playing, it was so much easier for this weekend. I didn't lose my cool at any stage during the 5 rounds, despite some horrible hitting at times, with the exception of HMB 17, which is a stupid hole that made me try for a shot outside my capabilities. I didn't play great, and I definitely didn't score well, but I played plenty of good golf shots, and had fun. Here are my scores:

    7/9, Gordonvale - 24 points
    8/9, Cairns - 29 points
    9/9, Palmer Sea Reef - 27 points
    10/9, Paradise Palms - 25 points
    11/9, Half Moon Bay - 29 points
    Average - 26.8 points off 6 or 7.

Usually when you don't play for a while, the parts of the game that require feel fall away, but for me that doesn't seem to be the case. I was able to putt pretty well all weekend, including a mighty victory in the putting comp. I was also surprisingly decent inside 100m with partial swings, however I tried to putt from green edges, to avoid greenside chipping which felt a bit foreign.

The part of my game that was disappointing, besides the rustiness and expected inconsistency, was my driver. I just couldn't get any control over it all weekend. If I did hit a straight one with it, you could guarantee that it was going elsewhere on the next one. It would have made things easier if I could at least have a consistent miss with it, but it was heading both left and right, with the occasional straighty in the mix. Once I put the driver away for the second half of the last round, and went with the three wood, which isn't a big distance sacrifice, I actually started to score and came home with 12 points in my last 5 holes. If only I had have done that earlier.

5 rounds, 3 of them in comps and my handicap hasn't moved a bit, because no flags dropped off. Although I enjoyed playing, I still won't be playing golf again on a regular basis, but I would like to schedule in the occasional round. I have an idea that I am playing with for an OZgolf event for that, and I'll try to post something on that soon.

    Thaxted today with Nadj.

27 points and quite an enjoyable morning. Still one more hole to open on the new front nine but the course is looking 100% on what it used to be.

First game in 6 weeks and it was bloody Par and the geeens were cored. PAR gives me the $hits.

Turned 3 down and had a putt on the last to finish square. Missed it from 3 foot .

1 down, was an acceptable come back
