Default 2017 US Open - Erin Hills

US Open is on this week, at the 'links' style Erin Hills, Wisconsin.

    https://erinhills.com/2017-us-open/

Erin Hills is nominally a pay for play course, following on from other recent public courses in Chambers Bay, Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black.

    Kevin Na
has already cracked the irrits about the rough - he has a point.

The course will suit those long and straight. Wayward drives will inevitably bring lost balls...

DJ is $8.50 favourite, Jordan $13, Jason Day and Rory at $15 and John Rahm at $21.

    Comments, thoughts?

Default 2017 US Open - Erin Hills

Instagram has been alive with comments about the fescue rough so far this week.
As a whole the course has been received well, greens are running at 12 already so it should be fun.

I've got a $5 bonus bet waiting to be invested on a sure thing, but I'm struggling to find one in the US Open this year.

There are three factors that are confusing me even more than normal.

    1. A course nobody has seen before, so it is hard to determine who it favours. We have read stories about new courses before about it favouring one style or another, and those stories have proven not to be be true. Chambers Bay is an example.

    2. The guns aren't in top form. DJ was in form, but he hasn't played much, and missed the cut last time out. Spieth is also missing cuts, Matsuyama isn't contending and JDay is up and down. Rory hasn't played at all, so I can't put money on him. Maybe Rickie is the best of the guns, but he has a tendency to go missing in US Opens.

    3. The US Open factor always makes it a difficult event to pick. The thing I don't like about US Open style deep rough is that it makes luck too much of a factor. Get a good lie, happy days, but a bad lie is poison. And for me, the defensive golf that often wins US Opens is boring golf.

It is feeling to me like the last major. A good player will win, but it could well be somebody showing no form who has a good week. Martin Kaymer? JB Holmes? Jimmy Walker again? Somebody like that.

I think I'll put my free $5 bet on a roughie to finish top 30 rather than even trying to find the winner.

You'd have to imagine the good/straight ball strikers like Scott and Stenson would be a good chance. Stenson could pull 3 wood all day and still win with his length and accuracy.

If Day hits his iron hybrid thingo more often than not too.

Depends on whether they can keep in their dacks for 72 holes.

Scott's short game and short putting issues will be the issue

I reckon if Phil can tame his driver (or go with the 3deep cally model instead) he is a fighting chance - putting the house off with the flat stick and short game to match

    Provided Phil plays.

I've seen more than enough Facebook and Instagramposts about Phil being a selfish prick and not withdrawing just in case there is a 4 hour break in play so he can get there. It's forecast to be 86 degrees and sunny - just withdraw already and let the next alternate prepare properly...

I like US Opens and the courses being a bit of a torture text, but that rough is ridiculous. That thickness being 10 metres off the fairway I can handle, but ending up in it from a bad bounce on the fairway doesn't seem fair...

Always a good week to watch, a premium on both length and accuracy as it should be. Can't find the quote however I think it's Lee Janzen who said you can already rule a line through anyone complaining about the rough. There are weeks when almost every fairway has water on one or both sides, hard to advance your ball out of a lake.

    What Mumbo Jumbo!
    Day:
"My biggest thing is I want my 2-iron to go 3-wood distance, so I can take the 3-wood out and don't have to worry about hitting a 3-wood," Day said. "Because I feel like I'm really good hitting the long irons. I shouldn't say I'm not good at hitting a 3-wood, in my times I'm good at hitting a 3-wood, I feel a lot more comfortable hitting 2-irons."

I'm no Jason Day but I feel the same as him. I'm much more comfortable hitting 2 iron than 3 wood.
