I saw somewhere yesterday that on average these fairways are 50% wider than those that were at Oakmont last year. The fescue is only going to be a problem for those that don't deserve to win.

I think the point that Na is trying to make is the unplayability of the lie within the fescue - long, penal rough for a wide shot = fair game but at least let me be able to get some club on it and hack it out onto the fairway without taking 4 swings at it

I don't think it is that simple.

The leader in fairway hit percentage this year is Steve Stricker with 72.85%

The worst is Andrew Loupe with 42.25% Assuming average is mid point = 57.55% of all tee shots will land in the fairway. Let's even assume only 15% of those misses are in cack(fairways are wider, and rest land first cut), we will see 8.6% of all tee balls in the deep cack.

For the first 2 rounds, 14 holes aren't par 3's, and there are 196 competitors, we will see 5488 tee shots. Statistically that is 472 balls. In unplayable rough. That will potentially need reloads (not including second shots, par 3 misses etc.).

    Sounds great.

Don't get me wrong, I am too. From what I have seen looks like the best US Open venue I have seen. Now some of the fescue is getting trimmed from unplayable to brutal, it's getting even better.

From what I can remember, Royal Adelaide was long a month or so before the ladies Open.

It got cut back before they started play.

What's the fairway hit % with 5 iron?

The longest shot isn't always the best shot

But this is the longest course ever to host a U.S open so 5 iron doesn't reach the fairway

No doubt but if the main punishment for missing fairways is a less favourable angle for your 2nd, you take your chances with driver-short iron.

Either way, AFAIK they're all playing the same course so the bloke who plays the best golf will win.

    Don't disagree with that.

But if the rough is that horrible the risk far outweighs the rewards, will get to watch them play a 7km track with hybrids and long irons, which I worry is a bit boring.

Birdies or triple bogeys is better than a par fest
