    Default Cape Wickham/King Island

Tragic news about the crash this morning. Devastating.

My wife bought me a trip to the Cape and King Island for my birthday over the weekend. Any advice re travel would be good? What would be the best time to travel play in that part of the world? Been to Barnbougle in September twice and that was a great time, but not sure if you'd look at a different time. Any advice would be great.

Yes sad news, hopefully it doesn't affect King Island tourism too much.
Not sure on best time of the year to visit, we went in middle of December and flew from Moorabbin Airport via Vortex Air. We were lucky to have perfect sunny days with nearly no wind, very rare apparently. Only a few days before we arrived, it was blowing like crazy.

We stayed at the Boomerangs by the Sea Accommodation, twin rooms. Rooms are just motel style rooms, we stayed there because the restaurant had awesome food - King Island Crayfish and Steaks. It's the same restaurant documented on the Golf Show - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paoNITYrPzY

We may have to try Stradbroke island instead.

    Yep Tony, played Ocean Dunes.

Was not a mega fan of a few holes. But really liked 2 and 4.
5 and 6 are poor use of land, 7 8 9 are good.

10 and 11 are spectacular, but I though the green on 11 was a little underwhelming.

13 and 14 are all world cool short holes.

What I didn't like about it was blind shots.

2 needs a rock on the mound to give a visual reference of the flag.

5 and 6 were both unnecessary blind.

I would love a second lap around it, but I don't think it quite met the hype, especially on comparison with CW.

I played CW and OD off the back pegs twice .... I had OD in the wind - it was pretty hard - but I liked it generally. i agree there was some stuff that needed improving. I was a little disappointed in CW - as I'd been told it was the better of the two by more than one person ... but i still liked it. I think i would have enjoyed it more it it had blown ...

Ferret are you living your life vicariously through others?

I was one of the hardy foursome. I will say that the last round on day 4 at OD was not that much fun. I was seriously sick of golf.

It was our second trip to KI for 3 of us and the weather was brilliant. We played
CW - Windy on day one, starting with @30kph getting up to probably 40+ later in the day.
OD - OMG it was picture perfect, gentle breeze, blue sky and got up to maybe @25kph later in the day. Post card weather for a post card course.
CW - cool and a bit overcast but not too windy maybe 30kph later in day. Saw a cracking tiger snake behind the 16th green.
OD - showers to start that cleared after about 6 holes, wind never got over 40kph.

My thoughts - first time I thought the course played hard because of the weather, it was wet and windy the whole time. This time, best round was 37pts at OD with 4 birdies. Most rounds were @ 31-35pts - my view - maybe two of the hardest golf courses I have played regardless of weather but also two of the most spectacular for setting.

Conditioning of CW was remarkable. Clearly COVID has helped keep traffic down but the greens and fairways were immaculate - right up there and overall hard to disagree with the AUS #2 ranking.

Both have some holes that I think border on unplayable under certain conditions....OD - the par 3 8th is crazy - even with bent greens its hard to hold the green - fortunately the pin was at the back. CW has a similar par 3 - 7th from memory that down wind is really hard to hold the green due to the massive bounce you get. Anything long is nearly always lost in the fescue as it bounces off the springboard greens.

KI courses are a lot more picturesque, better conditioned and more difficult than Barnbougle - however as a golf destination Barney is about 100% easier - I’ll go back but its not an annual pilgrimage like Barney.
    Cheers
    Craig

I think Barney has a better chance of better weather, its on a bay so there can be some relief from the westerly trade winds.
But it gets a lot more traffic and the condition of the courses just isn’t up to the same level. I take my hat off to the owners of OD and CW for their efforts in maintaining the courses at such high standards on what is surely remarkably low revenue.

4 weeks on - I’d go back in a heart beat.
    Cheers
    Craig
