Default Vietnam - golf around Danang and Hoi An

The 2017 holiday is booked, and the bride has given me the green light to take my sticks.

Danang GC by Norman and Montgomerie Links are on the schedule. Anything else worth looking at that way?

Ba Na Hills have recently opened a course designed by Luke Donald.
Pretty sure it is under lights so night golf a possibility.
Danang was my favourite out of the two mentioned, but both great courses. It was probably the caddy that helped me tip towards Danang. She was fun and always wanted too joke around.
There is another in Hue (about an hour north) designed by Faldo. Name escapes me at the moment.

Been thinking I need to get back myself but the wife just sprung that she wants to go to the World Jamboree for the scouts in a year and a half. Cost $8000 big ones, so holidays for me are on the back burner.

Mate of mine built Danang dunes said it was a must play also no idea where ho tram is but looked great on tv last year.

Will probably go 2018 unlike most of Asia from what I've seen and heard the courses in Vietnam are pretty damn good.

I played Montgomerie and Bana Hills mid 2016.

Both were pretty good but I really enjoyed Bana Hills more. It is brand new but the course was perfect. Its about a 45min drive by cab from Danang say $20 I think.

    Great caddies as well!

Thanks Rodders - guess that means over an hour from Hoi An?

    Looks good too.

Probably just an hour. We stayed at Fusion Maia which is on China Beach and it was about 15 mins to Hoi An - at least the way they drive over there, would take twice as long here!

Ba Na Hills has a spectacular cable car ride as well. Longest in the Northern Hemisphere.
We stayed a Victoria Hoi An right on the beach but do not call it the South China Sea over there as it has been a very long dispute with the Chinese over it.
They like the East Vietnamese Sea.

Hotel Pics. Our room was literally 8 metres from the ocean. Unfortunately a typhoon
went through about 6 weeks before getting there so some of the beach had been washed away.
All back to normal now though from what I understand.

Best place to eat in Hoi An is The Secret Garden and for desert go to a place called Enjoy.

Bookings made for Ba Na Hills and Montgomery Links. Danang GC was not available for some reason.

    Cant wait.

Ba Na Hills is probably one of the best golf courses I've ever played. Played Montgomerie Links the next day and it was very poor in comparison to Ba Na Hills.

Played BaNa on Monday - literally 3 other people on course at the time. It was about 40 degrees and 90% humidity, easily the most oppressive conditions I have played in. The course reminds me of a cross between Red Mountain Phuket and a bit of National Old. But it's not quite up to either of them. Is it a good track? Yes. Is it great? Nope. Give me a round on the sandbelt every time. But if you want to play golf whilst on holiday in Vietnam give this a crack. At about $200aud including cart caddy range balls it's about the right price for premium Asian golf. All the par 3s are downhill, and the repeated forced carries and heroic shots could make for a long day if you are slightly off your game. There is barely a flat shot on the course with everything requiring a change in mindset from yardages to elevation. From the black tees is measures 7857yards And you would be a dumb prick to play from there. Unless you love 250y forced carriesThursday was Montgomery Links on DaNang beach - which you may also know as China Beach. Much easier course but one with a lot of interest. Green complexes were good and it didn't seem over bunkered. I played from the back tees so couldn't reach the fairway traps - after playing back 9 first and struggling I parred 9 of the last 10 holes. A couple of semi blind tee shots add interest. I haven't played any gold coast golf but imagine this is typical of a premium resort course. I couldn't get on to DaNang, but overall really happy with where I played. For those coming this way, there is also the Laguna Lang course about 50km north, and a new Nicklaus course being built next to DaNang GC, plus a 6th track about 10km south of Hoi An under construction. Photos to come later

I was planning another trip back, but will put on hold until the new courses open.

Any idea on who is designing the one south of Hoi An?

The Nicklaus course, by some of his other designs, should be pretty good.

Don't have details but the GM at Montgomery Links was telling me about it.

The amount of development going along in that area is astounding

    Hoiana? WTF

It is a World Heritage listed town and beautiful the way it is. Can they expand it too take in that amount of tourism?
When we were there 3 years ago there were probably just enough restaurants and space for the tourists.

The development is 10k south of the town.

    The town remains untouched

A mate of mine lives in Vietnam and said Danang GC is great. He also said The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip (as spanner touched on above) is also a great track. Another Norman course.

For whatever reason, I was unable to get on to Danang GC - their website was showing as the course was unavailable. I know they were doing course maintenance this time of year, and there was significant construction on or near the site.
