Power was finally restored today. Also had a second road open so we could get out. Drove about 50 klms to get to a grocery store but they had everything we needed which was great. The hot shower tonight and being able to settle in with a cold drink and watch the cricket is nice. I will be back out there helping tomorrow in the local community trying to do what I can. Meeting some great locals out of all this that I would probably never have met and I feel privlidged to work beside some of these people and just keep remembering how lucky my family were in all of this.

Small town called Penguin (and yes there are penguins there) between Burnie and Ulverstone on the NW coast. I finally tracked her down and she was able to get back home thank goodness. Her place wasnt flooded but some houses nearby were. Not as much devastation as in Qld but it was a bit of a worry when I couldnt contact her for a while.

    Thanks for your thoughts everyone

+ 1. People are people. States are just lines on a map representing the middle tier of a 3 tier system of government. It's that simple.

Everyone's different .... Is there are need to unite the state into a common cause against adversity?
It's not exactly Churchillian but as far as I am concerned this is just the cry to arms, we unite together to help - no one seems to have any issues with the Queenslander call at SOO time!!!!

    TTR

We have a disaster affecting the majority of the population within the imaginary lines on a map in an area called Queensland. I am proud to be a Queenslander and about 95% of this country's population identifies themselves on state boundaries. You're a smart man - check your history. We were Queenslanders before we were Australians - the Qld spirit runs deeper

People, if you are one of the many volunteers out there lending a hand, please ensure you wear protective clothing at all times.
There have been quite a few people being admitted to hospital suffering from staph infections, respiratory infections & even more serious infections such as melioidosis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melioidosis & encephalitis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encephalitis

I know everyone wants to help, but please make sure you take precautions.

Heaps of before/after aerial photos here. The flood photos overlay via a mouse controlled "window blind". You can also click each photo and go to that area on Nearmap to have a closer look.

Cyclone Yasi sitting out near Vanuatu at the moment is a bloody monster
There is a chance it will cross the QLD coast on Thur, with Cyclone Anthony already 255km East of Townsville, our northern mates may be in for some scary times ahead.

It is pretty normal for the north and far north. It just happened that other parts of the State got to experience the rain that normally falls in parts of the north at this time of year.

I lived in Townsville for 20 years Ray so yes you are right about that.
I was referring to how much of the state has been affected this year.
