It doesn't matter how he acquired the injury, at least it gives the brains trust an easy way out, instead of having to admit they were wrong, again.

But the burning question is the number 6 spot. Is it a specialist bat (Khawaja), a non-specialist bat who doesn't bowl very well (Maxwell) or a tailender who bats OK (Agar). Or do they stick to their belief that they need five bowlers but they really want an insurance policy if a quick breaks down and pick Jackson Bird?

It might depend on the reading of the pitch on the morning of the match. I've read that the next one is traditionally low and slow, but that may not mean much.

I'd pick Khawaja. It's a pity Swepson isn't a good bat. He'd be an interesting selection.

Stoinis is in the squad for Marsh without any shield form. The selectors are cockheads.

But didn't you see his innings in the one-dayer in NZ??

In all seriousness, I read he's averaging mid teens with the bat this year in shield games. They pluck them from anywhere it seems.

After we won the first test I thought that's great, only a 3-1 loss now

Maybe Marsh doesn't need Shield hundreds after all. Surprise, surprise.

Maybe they need another net bowler.

Maxy or kuwaja, can't possibly be Stoinis.

    Here is the bad news.

    http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-...y/1086048.html

If the quotes from the Chairman of Selectors are accurate, Stoinis is not going there to give him experience with the test team. He is going there to play.

If I were a parent of a promising cricketer, I'd be stressing very strongly that the easy path to test cricket is to look good with the bat, bowl at 130k, and score some runs in the one day format.

I hope I'm wrong. I also hope that if I'm right, I'm wrong about Stoinis, and he turns out to be better than Watson. But the evidence doesn't support the theory so far.

Is that the same media that said Hazelwood wouldn't play the first test?

Whatever sells. I doubt it matters, they can't/won't reign Kohli and Kumble in so this next test could get quite ugly

Yep. I suspect there will be fireworks, things getting real nasty on the field.

Shame. Kohli is an absolute gun batsman, and I like the fact that he's willing to give some back (it's not like our blokes don't sledge) but he goes over the top.

Sledging is only an issue when Australia wins....we didn't win the last test so it's not a issue.

Maxwell is a specialist batsman. He would have played just as much shield cricket, T20 cricket and ODI cricket as he has already if he didn't bowl.

You don't average 43 at shield level if you can't bat. He also averages 35 in ODI's, with an incredible strike rate of 147 - which is comparable to most peoples T20 strike rate.

Agar is not merely a tailender, he has been batting as high as #5 for WA lately and has improved immeasurably. He may only average 27 or so at First Class level - but I imagine he averages 35 + in his most recent 2 seasons since being promoted up the order. Have to remember, he played test cricket 4 years ago, but he's still only 23.

We are in India, so there is the possibility of fireworks, and of sticks and stones being thrown at players who have offended the delicate emotions of the spectators.

I can't recall the last riot at a cricket match, but if the two sides don't tone it down there will be another one shortly.

Never fear, the selectors will call up a like for like replacement that averages 100 for his 2 wickets in shield cricket

What a missed opportunity this first session has been.

The pitch has played pretty well, but it is as good now as it will ever get. The footmarks are there already, waiting to be exploited.

No excuses for any of the wickets, and Marsh has shown once again why he can't establish a permanent place in the team. He just gets out too often early in his innings to bowling that isn't doing much.

But, unless Smith and Handscomb both make big hundreds (which I hope they do), this is the big chance for Maxwell. He'll never get a better opportunity to show he deserves his chance.

I think we'll need a very big score to be competitive. It is the sort of wicket Indian batsman grow up on. I'm almost hoping for a high scoring draw, as I think we'll struggle to get them out.
