Unfortunately I think Starc was bowling how the "brains" have decided it is best to bowl to the tailenders , it didn't work in Perth and hasn't looked like working .
Tell me a tailender in the world who likes facing leftarm express over the wicket bowling , the ball starts at your body and follows you , just dumb strategy , I think they are searching for the elusive reverse swing but he is starting it that wide it wont matter anyway

Starc is a new ball specialist who will more often than not remove 1 or 2 blokes in his opening spell.

Beyond that, he has no guile or craft in his bowling when he tires and the ball is a bit older. Unlike Rabada, who sets batsmen up beautifully and is only 20 years old.

Having said that, having a bloke that removes top order players almost at will in his first spell is still nice to have!

Starc is a Sledgehammer but a good one , Hazelwood is turning into a bloody good bowler though , they work well together

Rabada seems to have a 30 year old head on his shoulders when he bowls something you cant teach , prodigious talent

He bowls more wicket taking balls than most and can completely demolish even set batsman out of the blue. You have to bowl teams out to win. He does get a bit wayward at times but i'll have him anyday of the week. He's not actually back to his best yet but should be next series. His strike rate is way under the likes of Broad and Anderson and he has a habit of making a break though in his opening overs, a huge asset.

I thought SA bowled their spinner too much today, partly cos he seems pretty crap. Kwaka batted well and Handscomb looked the part about as much as Maddinson and Wade didn't. Tough to bat when they came out but looked a bit clueless as to how and try to grit through it like Starc did

I'm not sure what to think about today's play, particularly in light of the pink ball. We definitely need more evidence, but it really seemed that the pink ball is alive when new, and really alive when new at nighttime. But it looked like it died when it got old in the sunny afternoon session. Of course, it may just have been that we had two quality test batsmen at the crease at that time.

Handscomb was shaky early, but he got through it, then the Saffers seemed to give up by bowling spin until the new ball was due. So I think Handscomb still has some work to do to establish himself based on his dismissal against the new ball.

Maddinson was awful. He is allowed one ultra-nervous start, but if he starts off against the old ball and bats the same way he is a lost cause.

Any lead over 100 will be very useful, and if Khawaja can take us there all by himself he can have the man of the match award now. Brilliant innings.

Great innings by Usman , would have been very determined after not being named as a lock in for this test ( obviously mind games from Lehman ) exactly what was needed in the circumstances , a real test innings .

Very hard for any of the new guys at the times they came in and we were allways a chance to lose em quick in the middle again with so little experience there , but its a wait and see with them have to give them a go

Hard to believe but he said in the morning on ABC when asked about this that it was the first he'd heard about it. Genuinely doesn't read papers.

Is it a coincidence that the tail batted well after the batsmen made some runs for a change? Probably not, as it took away the pressure.

At lunch, chasing 100 I'd like to be brave enough to call us home, but I'm not doing so yet.

I'd like to see Renshaw attempting to score more runs rather than just defending everything. It is Ok to play yourself in, but it isn't OK if you can't actually play the innings you are building towards. It is like the days of Ed Cowan and Alex Doolan. Time will tell.

However, if Steven Cook can make a hundred then so can Renshaw. Cook can't bat, but he managed to stay in and get enough nudges to eventually find a comfort zone, so it is possible. I don't see a long test career for him (watch him become an all-time great now).
