I prefer comparing to the 5 marker and 10 marker.
I think if you're using strokes gained, you're definitely better off comparing to a golfer 5 (maybe 10) shots under your handicap, not scratch. I used strokes gained for a month or so with Golf Stats Coach/Golf Coach App on android, but didn't really get much from it to justify the effort & cost. I'm happy with my basic fairways, GIRs, putts stats.
Yes I use Game Golf & it has a screen where you can compare your round against a “scratch golfer” (& other handicaps) and it gives you strokes gained against that statistical base across the 4 dimensions. I get that it’s not 100% accurate but i feel that it does highlight areas of weakness and I have been using it to drive the focus of my limited practice time which has worked well this year.
I don't understand this strokes gained thing, stat or what ever metric it is?
The previous posts seem to be referring to straight stats and calling it strokes gained. This is probably because whatever they use to record it does that. Not all greens in reg are equal. This is a good explanation.
On average, it takes TOUR players the following number of shots to get the ball in the hole from the fairway:
2.0 shots to hole out: 7 yards
2.5 shots to hole out: 30 yards
3.0 shots to hole out: 168 yards
If the player finds the cup in two shots from 30 yards out, he’s gained 0.5 strokes. If it takes three shots, he’s lost 0.5 strokes. The TOUR’s data can do the same thing for every distance and situation.
Thanks for the explanation 3pp.

Can the fact that I had 20 putts on the front 9 last week be considered a low point?

Thanks. Yes, it's been a ride. When I started playing golf seriously 2 years ago, I was playing of 16.3. Feb last year I was around 8, now I'm under 4. Maybe I'll keep halving it each year?
I wonder if the mental game improves as fast as the technical? I still make some course management mistakes, would I be better at that if I'd been playing this level of golf for a longer period of time?
First even par round today see's a new low posted...
5.9 baby!
When I started my lessons 2yrs ago, the goal was sub-6. Took a bit longer than expected, but got there in the end.
