    Default Aspiring tour pro

Hi, I am a 6 handicapper trying to become a tour pro. I am 17 years of age and have left university to devote all my time to golf. Realistically I feel confident that I can do this with a couple of years of hard work. My question is, what is the most efficient way I can reach this level? Find a pro and get regular coaching etc? Thanks.

Perhaps you could think about your golf career like they do in college in the states. Most of the top American pros come from the college system. You could do Uni part time and play golf pretty much full time. I don't know anything about grooming a player for pro status, but I do know if you consume your mind with one thing for 2 years, you might get pretty stale and your brain might get crowded by over thinking. If you had a bit of part time Uni to mix it up a bit, you might have a good regular distraction that can clear your mind when you need it. Might not work for you, but would be important for me if I was embarking on your jorney. Your mental skills are as important as your physical ones. Good luck.

Get your swing/fitness/short game sorted out in the next 12 months. Find a knowledgeable pro (and learn about the swing yourself).
If after 12 months of diligent effort if you are not regularly shooting under par on courses other than your own course....go back to uni and play golf for fun rather than pay!

Every pro out there hits it good. I have seen plus 3 standard players never make a dollar!
    Be realistic with yourself!

    Good luck

Can you decide you want to be a pro then make yourself good enough or do you need to be good enough first then decide to be a pro?

Whatever happens, good luck. You don't need to grow up until you're 30. Chase your dreams

I say surrender the fantasy now unfortunately.
    A. You're off 6 which is more than decent but not good enough
    B. When you turn 18, you'll be on the piss & chasing birds (or should be) & golf will become secondary.

    B. Is the killer....seen a few talented young blokes go down that path, now they are green keepers or the like lucky to play in the Pennants team!

Are you a determined person who will practice 12 hours a day and have the skills to achieve your aspiration? Even Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team. But the question is, are you really that one in a million athlete who will make it as a pro? Realistically, no. If you aren't playing at least to scratch, you're already behind the curve by a lot. Nobody wins tournaments playing par golf, they need to score well below par to even have a chance to win.

With the drive and determination to start two threads on the one topic, how could he not succeed?

Thanks for all the responses guys, sorry about the double thread thing haha didn't think I'd get one reply. I got on the phone to my old coach this morning and told him my plans for the future. After sending him my swing, he believes it isn't as far-fetched as most people think but it's down to me at the end of the day. I will reply to this thread in a couple of weeks to share my thoughts and progress that I've made.

Most tour players could break par of their course in their early teens. Some of these kids are targeted by State bodies and have access to premier teachers etc at no cost. They get selected through results and compete regularly against the best amateurs in the country.

Thought I would dredge up an old thread.

We have all seen threads where xyz off scratch thinks he/she can make it.

It takes plenty and few if any get there, however an "old" mate had a great result today, beating Peter Lonard in a play off to win the (shortened) Senior PGA. Pretty stoked for him given the sacrifices he has made to get there.

My last couple of weeks of playing golf has also led me to the idea that I will be able to compete on the seniors to in a few years when I turned 50. The main thing you need for any of this is either luck or cash - without either, it just seems to be a battle. the funny part about this is that to survive on the senior tour, you only need to shoot two or three under off the Blacks... I thought it would be way lower.

Anyway, back to my two friends, I have one mate on the LA tour and the other without any tour, COVID has pretty much destroyed any chance...

One of the members at my club joined the Legends Tour a few years ago but he was cashed up after selling his business.

He wasn't a really low marker so has had limited success but I guess he's enjoying himself.

Webster should have joined the coffin dodger tour a few years back. Even now as a sandbagging 4 marker he could take most of them.

The standard of play on the Legends Tour is pretty poor outside of the top half dozen players. The money they play for is shitty too.

It's a lot tougher getting a Legends Tour card now, Guy Wall finished top of their Q School and got 1 of the 3 cards on offer.

    W
ould be four rounds for you, 36 hole qualifying then into the main draw (another 36).

I can find out what he shot, I would remember if it was more than -10 so suspect it was around -4/-5 for the final 36. I do know he played a number of practice rounds over the preceding months on the course prior.
