    Default What's your tempo?

Here are three tempos based on John Novosel's Tour Tempo. Which one do you fit into?

    Fast

    Medium

    Slow

You start the backswing as soon as you hear "Swing". The top of the backswing should coincide with "Set". The sound of impact should be at "Through".

    Should be interesting.

I had to make some dummy swings here in the office (drawing a few strange looks) to figure it out, and according to these guides, I have a slow tempo. Is that good or bad?

I don't think it matters whether you are fast or slow - just that you have the right 3:1 tempo

Courty, I bet you never considered your swing "slow" ... huh?

If you are within the range of these three tempos, it's good. The researchers found that most of us hackers did not fit into any of the above three tempos. The numbers indicate the number of frames (using 0.03 sec per frame NTSC) during the backswing and then the downswing. So, 21/7 means 21 frames from address to top, and 7 frames top to impact. As Amanda has mentioned, there seems to be a definite ratio between the backswing and downswing ... 3:1.

Most hackers were actually SLOWER than the slowest Tour Tempo (ie. 27/9). This was due to the extra duration of the backswing. We tend to take the club back TOO SLOW. This can lead to jerky transition and inconsistent swings. By speeding up the backswing and getting the more natural and athletic 3:1 tempo ratio, they found improvements in ball flight results. Interesting stuff.

Just FYI, Els and Tiger are 24/8. Hogan was 21/7. Jan Stepenson is 27/9.

Amanda, did you find out which tempo suited you?

Jono - I'm 33/11 (is that the slowest one on the CD?)

I put them on my mp3 player and tried it out at the driving range - I just couldn't do any of the pro tempos! Maybe if I worked at it a while. I did find more consistent ball striking & felt a lot more comfortable with a consistent tempo.

On the contrary, it's about what I expected. I know my swing is a little slower than some. A few years ago I intentionally slowed it down & shortened the backswing (I don't quite get to parallel) in order to give me greater control. Before I made these changes, my backswing was way too quick (would have been more like 2:1) and too steep, and my game was erratic because of it.

When I first listened to the tracks, I found I was actually slower than 27/9. I was about 30/10. Probably because I had too many swing thoughts which were slowing me down ...

I'm now around 24/8. Don't know whether it's improved my ball striking abilities, but now I don't think as much over the ball.

Hmmm ... I wonder what Jarro's tempo is ... With the old P-A-U-S-E at the top, he would have been something like 55/10.

Dragging up an old thread but I need to work on my tempo/timing and have read a few reviews of this and most have been good so far.
All of those who have this think the book/cd is a worthwhile purchase?

    Just,

I have the book, the CD and the Tour Tempo Player. I think it's great because it stops me from thinking too much over the ball. Hmmm ... perhaps Alo could use this.

The book is no big deal. Just goes on about how great it is ... If you have the tracks and have an MP3 player or an ipod, you have everything you need to make it work.

Jarro and Alo have a copy so you might be able to borrow it from them. Otherwise, send me a PM.

Thanks Jarro. It'll give me something to work on in the range I'm setting up in the shed.

Gotta use the shed for something. Doing it on the cheap at the moment and depending on the results may start developing into something better. Can swing up to 4 iron in there.
