Default When is an AIRY..... an AIRY ???

    Dan ???

My impression, having seen a scratch marker have an AIRY after bouncing off a tree root, is that an attempt at hitting a golf ball and MISSING is an AIRY !!!!

    Your thoughts ???

My own thoughts are that an airy needs to be exactly that - air only. Perhaps we can call what i did should be called a Footy - hitting the turf about a foot behind the ball. [how the f*ck does one easily insert the embarrased smiley.. here].

The scariest part? During the ambrose the day prior, 2nd shot in from about 170 on the 17th hole. Almost exactly identical GPS co-ordinates. Yep - i had a Footy the day before as well. Technically speaking though this wasn't the same - the ball moved on that occasion

For what it's worth, we came 2nd in the Ambrose with -5 (6 birds, 1 bogey) with a handicap of 12 5/8.

But you don't have to hit a golf ball to make it move, and if it moves you wouldn't call it an airy, so your definition is flawed.

    how so ???

If you attempt to hit it and you miss, it is an AIRY... If you attempt to hit it and it moves, it isn't an airy !!! Is the confusion the word hit ?? I'm sorry, I am confused by your point...... if you are making one ???

Is 'hit' defined as making contact with the ball or just moving it?

hard to say, I guess i have always thought that it isn't an airy if it moves. If it moves in the "act" of hitting then technically I guess it's a hit.

Still, the point at hand is more what Jarro said

Come on, many of us have had airy's, or something equally as embarrasing.

I mean, there had to be at least one airy in that record score of 17 stableford points? For your sake AP, i'm hoping you had about 15.

It was a record at the time that has now been blitzed. And there was no air swings, just a lot of balls stuck in the feral bush of Brookwater.

I can't recall not making the ball move when playing a stroke.

OK, i was prepared to go with you for so long, and willing to admit that you found you ball in play on 11. But you're streak of truth fabrication must end here. Key words for the 11th hole for Mr 69 - "MaxFli" and "Patriot"

    Besides, it was a 4-iron.

Mate. Sorry. If you make a swing with the intent to move the ball, and it doesn't move - No matter how you look at it, IMO - that is an airy. You won't be the last to do it.

i think if you swing and miss EVERYTHING , that is an airy.

If you swing and only hit grass/tree/rock/fence/buggy/animal etc. ... from hereoon in ...it will be known as a FISHY

anyone had any Fishy's lately ??

Jarro - it got a little awkward trying to plan it all (all credit to Tez for making the time slot available). I had a 2 day week at work last week which meant bugger-stuff-all time for planning golf, travel etc. Therefore 2 rounds at The Palms, and one at The Pines was easy - it was just a golf cart away from where i was staying.

Yeah but it doesn't count if it wasn't in a comp round.

Or does that not apply here?

Ha ha, Dan had a root!

Don't worry Dan, I had a root on the 3rd at Nudgee too, but at least the ball moved a few metres.

I can only wish I had a root - my airy/footy/fishy was in the middle of the fairway..

Don't worry Fishy, Ive seen better.

A Guy I played with was hitting a 3wood in the middle of the fairway and nearly missed it. He cold topped it that hard that it drove it into the soft fairway then popped out and ended up a foot further back that the original position.

And if that wasn't funny enough(as you could imagine we are rolling on the ground with laughter), he proceeded to do it to the next shot too. He must have tried to hit the second one harder as it went back wards a metre after it popped out of the ground.

PS. Jarro,Fishy is lucky he didn't play Windy if he had 93 around SC, that sort of form around Windy would have seen him raising the bat for sure

Thanks for the support Tez [I think!]

Hey - the 93 at SC Palms was only 5 flubbed chips and 3 or 4 less putts away from a respectable round!

Never seen a driver shaft break like that before.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

Grip belted into objects one to many times maybe and finally gave way under normal use.
Yes, not in the normal spots like adaptor or mid shaft.
Looked very much like a free air swing on the Tee in NSW Champs at Yarrawonga a few years ago. No broken shaft with this one though.
