taking the clubs overseas

Need to take 2 sets of clubs to scotland. Any tips on what to carry in, and / or carriers to go with who wont loose our bags? Thanks

Presume you are not going to lump two golf bags to Scotland and will pack both sets in a single? I have done a lot of travelling with this one http://ogio.com/golf/travel/straight-jacket-bag

You might get some advice on hard cases, great for a plane but difficult in a car when you get there.

Pack the bags tight with clothes or towels ... helps avoid impact damage.

Go to Golf Shop
Buy travel cover.

The more you pay the better quality, and padding you get.
Suggest soft cases. Hard cases can be very awkward to fit into car boots and the like.
As for Airlines, any can lose a bag. I have never lost one overseas on several airlines, but that doesnt mean jack. Just put heaps of labels on it and in it to help it be identified if missorted. There are devices you can buy to help with this from serial numbered tags to GSM trackers.

My son flew to Bali and recently returned this weekend, he had his golf bag shrink wrapped, probably glad wrapped is the better term, cost 10 dollars. First time I have seen this as he has flown overseas for the past 5 years and takes his clubs everytime

The only reason to shrink wrap is to stop baggage handlers from putting their dope in your bag. Doesnt do anything to stop them from being lost, stolen or damaged.
Not to mention if you go to the USA, they are just going to rip it open anyway.

IMO the shrink wrap will be a pain in the bum.

Others with more experience may have a different story, but I have found that the golf clubs get unloaded and out of the baggage area before the rest of the luggage, at the Oversize Luggage Area. So you usually have at least something in the unlikely event your other luggage doesn't arrive (mine always have).

The other thing to remember is to make sure you know what the weight limit is for bags (usually 23kg), and make sure you don't go over it. I think Highballin had a recent experience that he doesn't wish to recall (but he posted it so we can all recall it and chuckle). My golf bag weighs about 15kg, so you can get a bit of other stuff in it if you need to, assuming yours is the same.

Thanks everyone. Good tips. Yep baggage limit internationally is 23 kilos per person currently. Last time we flew domestically the golf bag weighed 8 kilos as we used a light weight golf bag. A bit more paranoid travelling o.s.

From recent experience, 32kg maybe to/from USA (qantas 2 x 32kg?) or the maximum limit for any single bag, any airline is 32kg.
Every international airline I can recall in recent memory is 23kg allowance 1 bag, except for LCC which you pay for your luggage by kg anyway.

The thing to watch out for now, is most airlines now count golf clubs as normal luggage, and the normal allowance is 1 x 23kg.
So you cant bring both a suitcase and your golf bag.

Travelled back to Singapore in September and I bought one of them cheap pencil bags and somehow I managed to cramp 14 clubs in it and chucked it into a golf travel bag. I also had one of them strong arm type of shaft thingie to provide a rigid support inside the bag.

On my way back. I somehow managed to squeeze another stand bag, an additional set of irons, albeit 6 pieces and 3 additional putters.

Put a broom handle wth some type of top on it next to your driver, I have a Shammy container on top of a broomstick. Needs to be about 1.5inches higher than your driver, stops the driver copping any force from above.

Not needed these days with adjustable drivers. Just detach the head from the shaft and wrap the head up in the headcover.

Update: Qantas has screwed golfers.

International flights, Economy has changed from 2 x 23kg to 1 x 32kg. Lets hope thats not a industry trend.

Other classes still get 2 bags included.

It's 30kg if you are Economy, with a limit of 32kg per piece, if you have a larger allowance (Silver FF has 42kg).

Qantas aren't the only airline that flies.

Although none of them fly from Oz at the moment, so I don't know why anyone would be looking up luggage conditions right now.

i won't be looking at any of this stuff until we see a green light, which seems some way off, despite the apparent success of vaccines. Anybody got inside info, or even an educated guess?

My educated guess is that I'm stuck here for at least this year. Other countries (Asia) are already in discussions about vaccine passports, but still requesting a reduced quarrantine even if your have been vaccinated and a certificate of clear test. This will begin next month in Thailand.
As far as I am aware, Australia are still not even in discussions about this.
Dubai (I have heard) is the easiest to get in around the world at the moment, but getting out of Australia will be the biggest challenge.
Obviously I have vested interests in Asia so that is why I'm watching there the most.
