Gripmasters in the rain

Have newish (coupla months) gripmasters on woods and wedges. Played in some rain on Saturday and they were horrible while it was falling. Could barely hold on to the club. By contrast clean tour velvets on the irons were fine. Once the rain stopped falling, the gripmasters were so tacky it felt like they stuck to my hands. What's your experience? Undoubtedly they are great in damp and humid conditions but do they work in the rain? Very tempted to replace them.

That's strange I've never had an issue in the rain as I make sure I towel dry them before I grip the club and they are super tacky.

Same here. Just a wipe down and they are great.

It sounds like the grips could have used a mild wipe before the round, as they can get a little slippery from time to time.

Keep'em clean and they are sweet in all conditions

They were clean. Rain was heavy and towel was wet, so didn't think toweling them off was much of an option. Will try that before giving them the flick. They are also the smooth ones, maybe the textured type work better?

I have gripmasters and in the rain you need to wipe the grips dry, If your hands and grips are wet they are going to be just as slippery as any other grip.

If I have to play in the rain, I run a hacksaw blade over the Tour Velvets and they are plenty grippy - even when dripping wet. I will try the towel.

Do they still leach in humid conditions and rain?

In humid conditions they are excellent because sweaty hands makes the grips more tacky, as does light rain.

I found them to be excellent in the rain, but you still have to make a bit of an effort to wipe them down.

I am in a bit of a quandary lately over gripmasters - they work the best up here in Darwin, but I hat having to pick the dirt off if you drop them on the ground.

Like the others have said ... If GM's get drenched they will be as slippery as any other grip. When wet/drenched, a quick wipe down and they are tacky as all shit again.

I found the wraps to bleed a little colour, like any dyed leather would.

I loved the tackiness of GM's but found them too firm and they only get firmer with age ... If they had a soft version I'd be gaming them, no questions.

Out of interest, are the ones referenced by the OP current GM's or the "Caldwell" embossed version ?

Yep I had them a couple years back and found the colour bled out when it was humid with sweaty hands.

Did like the feel, though they got a bit firm after a while as Dee points out. Probably the fact I don't use a glove.

First statement isn't correct. If I have to play in the rain I don't bother trying to stay dry, and that goes for constantly towelling off grips. Newish Tour Velvets lightly roughed up with a hacksaw blade work fine without having to be towelled off, even in heavy rain. There is enough to manage when it's pissing down without having to try to hit during the few moments the grip is still dry.I can't see any reference to Caldwell, only Grip Master.

Secondly ... Cladwells are Grip Masters, just older and labelled differently.

What ever you fellas like I like or dislike I recommend elite in the rain and humid conditions, don't even need a glove. Worth a try. Great for all conditions.

Yeah, however a new (un-scuffed) Tour Velvet and a new GM are completely different propositions when wet. I played 9 holes in drizzle this morning and used the towel/armpit etc to dry them off. You have to hit quickly after the towel or the tackiness turns to soapiness. Love them in the dry/damp/humid but they suck in the rain once everything gets wet.
