    Default Shaft Weight

Got some questions on how shaft weight effects the performance of a club.

Currently have an R11 driver with a stiff 60 gram shaft that I love. Hit it avg 260 and swing speed according to drummonds mimatch is about 100-105mph.

Recently purchased a sldr 3 wood in stiff with an 83 gram shaft. Struggling with consistency and the most common shot is a pull hook.

It appears to me with my very basic understanding of shaft weights that the 3 wood shaft may be too heavy. Anybody know if this sounds right?

Also if anyone can give a very basic overview of the effect of different shaft weights that would be much appreciated.

yeah I don't think 3 wood = heavier shaft should be as universally an accepted truth as it is at the moment. I'm playing a cut down driver Oban Devotion (was a 60 gram driver shaft) in my 3 wood, and getting a level of consistency that I've never had with 70 and 80 gram fairway shafts.

Agreed. You will need some serious oomph to make that combo work.

105mph ain't going to cut it unless you are hitting up on it a lot

    Thanks for the replies.

virge, I have a naturally low ball flight as it is so that helps clarify why I'm struggling with it.

What shaft is it? I'm going to guess it's the Fuji TS 8.3? Also what is the exact shaft in your R11?

Correct on the 3 wood, it has the Fuji Motore Speeder TS 8.3, the R11 has a Fujikura Blur 60g Stiff.

There's a few things at play here -

If you have the 60 (and not TP 65) Blur in your driver it's a very light easy to load and launch shaft with plenty of torque.

In the 8.3TS you've gone up not one but two weight divisions (most like to go up one for driver vs 3 wood) to a low torque stout shaft. The .3 series are quite robust shafts 7.3 and above, especially comparative to what you have in the big dog.

The SLDR head is also more a players head with not much help given launch and spin wise.

The entire club is too robust and heavy. You could change to a lighter friendlier type FW wood shaft and it may work, no guarantee tho as the head might not suit even with such a shaft.

The rule of thumb on FW shafts is that most (but not all) will fit best into shafts one weight up and a bit softer tipped vs driver. The Fuji is only 59 grams so you'd have to be cautious.

    Thanks for the info TNO.

So based on my current driver a fairway wood with something about 70g and stiff would make more sense?

That would work for most. Don't get anything stiff in the tip, you want some help with launch. The head still may not be suited to a player that launches it low.

The good news for you is that if you fit the 60 blur you don't have to spend big dollars on top shelf uber stable low launching shafts.

Consciousness and awareness - awareness is being aware of what is happening and being aware of what is happening within ourselves while we are conscious. Where did I leave my glasses?

Thanks TNO and razaar. Reading that article and and what TNO has said about the tip and torque its starting to make a lot more sense.
