I have nine sets of Ping irons. I buy all my clubs 2nd hand, so there is always the chance someone has already tinkered with them. . Allowing that proviso, they are generally pretty good on SW, weight progression. length etc i.e conformity to original specs. I don't normally check lie or loft, especially cast clubs. The only significant issue I have struck are older clubs with ridiculous amounts of DS tape under the grips. A total PITA to remove/change. But I would put that down to a Pro Shop doing a grip change, rather the original build.

Dave I am playing Callaway Steelhead XR pro irons with 2019 Pro Vx.
What irons would you say from your stash are similar to these forgiving spinny heads?

I only have three Callaway sets to compare to, but they look very similar to the original Apex irons and specs are almost the same. In other brands I would say; Adams CB3s, Cleveland 588TT, Cobra Fly Zs or F8s, Nike Vapor Fly, Srixon Z565, TM RSi 2s, and Wilson FG Tour F5s.

Specs are similar to the Apex just a cheaper set as it is not forged.

Thanks Dave, thats all interesting.Have you ever tried to MOI match them? I would think they might be a little inflexible for that, but then again probably most retail gear is in the same boat.

They are all MOI matched. Mostly via changing their length, but the odd piece of lead tape was also used.

I generally MOI match my clubs by length. It is the advantage of being tall. My spreadsheet tracks length variation vs MOI change. Ditto on Lead Tape vs MOI change. Makes it easy to cut to a length and be pretty certain of the MOI resulting. I don't often have to recut (maybe 1 in 10, if that), usually because I was conservative in the initial cut. Doing it this way negates most of the variables in original built sets. Shaft weight is about the only other factor I usually need to add to the equation. Lighter weight shafts tend to be end up longer as the MOI added per length is slightly lower.

Dave. I just read a topic on GolfWrx that a guy ordered a set of pings with progressive swingweights of 1 Sw point per club, and he said they all within 6 points on his MOI Auditor. Ping only charged $2.50 extra per club. He didnt mention if he requested 3/8 length gaps. Obviously not a perfect way of doing it

1 SW is broadly the increments I see in a set before I match them, but is does vary a fair bit depending on the original build. Before I got my MOI Analyser, I was doing 3/8 builds and there were certainly closer across the set. The issues I see with the average conventional build when I measure them are 1) The variability/quality of the build and 2) the variability of the components used e.g. head weights, shaft weights etc. If the head weights are not close to the traditional 7g increments, then something else has got to change to get the same swing weight, length, frequency; or whatever factor is given priority in the build.

I am extending a set of irons for a friend at the moment. It is a simple job, just extend them 0.5", to match his previous set. I altered his 8i a few weeks ago for him to test the change and he was happy with the improved strike he got. I always take measurements of a club before I alter it, irrespective of the change/build method; Total Weight, Swing Weight, Length and MOI. This set were obviously built to a D0 Swingweight, which is different to the standard Specs I can find on the net, which are supposed to be D1 moving to D2 at the short end of the set. Yet this set is built slightly longer than the standard specs, which suggests the heads and/or shafts were slightly underweight in the original build.

The Ping Buyer might get a good result in terms of the MOIs being similar across the set, but if the resulting MOIs are nowhere near his target MOI, has he really achieved anything?

I work backwards from my target MOI, what do I have to change to get each club to my target MOI? I prefer altering the length, as it is the easiest change for me, give I play my clubs well over length anyway. Before I moved to MOI builds, I was extending my clubs by 1" to 1.5", depending on the starting point. I care little if my irons are exactly the same increments of length or weight etc, only MOI matters to me; ditto shaft frequency or any other build discipline. I have found MOI matching give me the best strike consistency. and because I am continually changing the clubs in the bag, a consistent MOI across all clubs other than Putter, makes it easier for me to transition. In reality the variances in length etc are usually nominal and would not be noticed by most players.

If you were a shorter player, and/or your lengths specs were standard or shorter, you might go the lead tape route, or the fiddly hosel weights or Lead/Tungsten powder options. Or start to play with shaft weight and compositions to lower or increase as needed.

How does muggins find his target( best) MOI? Is there a range that suits most average golfers?

I assume a clubfitter generally works out what suits based on experience and the OLD "favourite club" question. I know you found yours because you have tried a thousand variances

The one thing I was disappointed to see at both PXG and PING assembly lines is neither weighs any component. They just randomly pick shaft, grip and head, assemble aand change headweight to get target SW. Whilst that would be nice if shaft weights were consistent, they are not.

I remember Toze saying that with MOI he starts with the heaviest head and worked from that, so i made sure that when I ordered the heads feom Golfworks i got them handpicked to be at spec or lighter, and every one was .3 to .7 gram lighter which was nice

Yeah, it is basically trial and error, but if you think about it you would likely have a good starting point e.g. a couple of favorite clubs that you just seem to strike better. It is ultimately all about the strike. Some talc powder. foot spray and/or a marker pen will give you the feedback you need. Take some clubs, and ideally some lead tape to a grass range and basically follow the Dynamic Lie fitting process to narrow down your strike point to a consistent area on the face. An experienced fitter will be able to narrow it down relatively quickly by your strike quality and point, and the ball flight. He has the added advantage of being able to measure your clubs starting points.

Ultimately with MOI matching you are trying to get a consistent favored "heft" across your set. If you have a couple of clubs you favor, and their Heft is very similar, it is likely you aren't that far away from your target. A bit of tinkering up and down to confirm, then build some more clubs to confirm.

Tutelman has a few articles on the subject. Here is one on how to MOI match via Swing Weight. You will he has calculated 1.3/1.4 increments, though it varies slight depending on head weight and/or shaft weight.

    The Game golf website going off line for 10 days or so three a spanner in works of my normal post round analysis and writes ups. I have 4 rounds to report, but the older rounds are pretty dim memories now. Here are some quick summaries;

Saturday the 9th May, I managed 33 points at Reddie Bay (14 / 19 ) with two wipes

Driver: Callaway Rogue 10.5* with PL Blue Reg
Fairway: Cobra King Ltd 3 Wood
Hybrid: Cleveland CG Black #3 19*
Irons: Cobra King Forged Combo 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI2 50*, 53* & 57*
    Putter: Ping G5i - Craz-E CS CB 38"

The Rogue was super solid. I continue to work on my swing and it doesn't always come off. But when it does the results are very encouraging. The Rogue is super friendly and very easy to swing. Unfortunately I started badly and took a few holes to get going. But once I did I was hitting them straight and long, with the occasional blip straight left.

Solid numbers with the forged Combo, but my bad misses made them work hard. The short game was solid and I putted well (29) without luck.

The next round was Wednesday 13th May. only 28 points this time (14 / 14 ) with 3 wipes.

Driver: Callaway BB V Series 10.5* with PL Blue Reg
    Fairway: Wilson Staff Fybrid 15*
    Hybrid: Tour Edge Exotics XCG7 #3 19*
Irons: Henry Griffitts Ultimates F5 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI2 50*, 53* & 57*
    Putter: SC Futura 7M C-B 38"

The V Series just want to go hard right all day. Not an issue I have had with it before, I struggled to bring it under control most of the round.

And I just can't come to grips with the Henry Griffitts. They seem to give almost no feedback.A Strike out of the middle feels little different to one well off centre. They feel OK for what I assume are a cast club, but I never really get any confidence on the strike with them.

I putted OK, but not well enough to save a bad round.

Friday 11th May was a Black Marker Challenge round in the early morning dew. I played reasonably solidly for 31 points ( 16 / 15 ) with two wipes.

Driver: PXG 0811X 10.5* with PL Blue Stiff
    Fairway: TM M4 3 Wood
    Hybrid: PXG 0371 #3 19*
Irons: TM RocketBladez Tours 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI1 50*, 53* & 57*
Putter: SC Golo 5 Dual Balance CB 38"

I was a bit mixed with the PXG. All me, not the club. I got a bit quick at times and hit a few on the head. That and a lost ball off the tee on 8, spoilt an otherwise good driving. I am really warming to the PXG. It sounds great and feels good to swing. It looks good at address and is very straight. I tweaked the loft up to 11.5* to compensate for the low spin and they seemed to help a bit.

The RB Tours were very solid and I hit an above average GIR Stat.

The short game was a bit mixed. Very good at times and pretty ordinary at others. The conditions were a bit mixed and the bounces quite variable between greens. Some greens had been de-thatched, sanded and over sown. Putting was solid (29).

And then there was last Saturday. I ended up with 34 points (20 / 14) with two wipes, but it could have been anything as I struck the ball as good as I have in recent times. I birdied the 1st, pared the 2nd after having to chip out side ways and was on a roll till a poor 3 Wood drive on the 9th saw my first wipe. I was going head to head with our club champ (+2) and was in front for a while.

Driver: Cleveland Classic Tour 310 10.5* with Miyazaki Tour Black 61 Stiff
Fairway: Callaway 2015 BB 3 Wood
    Hybrid: Titleist 913Hd 18*
    Irons: TM RocketBladez F5 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI1 50*, 53* & 57*
Putter: SC Squareback No. 1 CB 38"

The Classic Tour is one of my all time favorite Drivers. I have several variations of the Classic in the collection, and the 310 Tour is my pick. It was in my bag for a long time in the days before Bag Lotto. I drove it well for most of the day. The wipes weren't due to the Driver. My Driving was well above average in the windy conditions (25kts+).

The RocketBladez matched their Tour brothers for GIR stats, in fact I bettered them. They were very solid all day.

My short game was exceptional at times, but tapered off a little late in the round. My putting was very good, never looked like 3 putting and made some very good putts for 30 for the day.

Wednesday, 20th May was a single Stab at Reddie Bay. I struggled off the tee and that reflected in my scoring; 17/13 for 30pts.

Driver: Titleist TS3 10.5* with PX Evenflow Stiff
Fairway: Callaway XR Steelhead 3 Wood
    Hybrid: TM M6 #3 19*
Irons: Cobra AMP 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI1 50*, 53* & 57*
    Putter: SC Futura 7M C-B 38"

I struggled to hit fairways consistently this round. My misses were mainly straight left. It took me a while to figure it out.
I hadn't struck the problem before with the TS3. The hard face feel had me struggling for feedback. I worked out I was swinging too hard and getting quick on the shots, hence push lefts. We had rain the day before and the sting was out of the ground. I wasn't getting the same distance I was used to and hence the harder swinging and resultant errors.

Which is a shame, because the AMPs were working pretty well for me. Though I did discover one issue with larger head irons, I hadn't twigged too before. I was in a gnarly lie, down in a divot in the rough with only wire grass around it. I had to go down digging for it, hosel got grabbed, toe closed hard and ball went hard straight right into the piss, green side. I reckon a blade style small headed iron could handle such a lie much better. Though, in hindsight, I should have thought more about the lie and hit a different shot, a punch and run smother, rather than trying to fly the ball to the green.

My short game was mixed and my putting solid. Five rounds in row now with 30 putts or less.

My next round was on Friday, another single Stab at Reddie Bay. Much better scoring, but still left a fair bit out there; 17/18 for 35pts with a wipe.

Driver: Ping G30 SFT 12* with Alta Blue Reg
    Fairway: Cobra XL 3 Wood
    Hybrid: PXG 0371 #3 19*
Irons: Cobra Fly Z Pro Combo 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI1 50*, 53* & 57*
    Putter: Yes Stephanie C-B 38"

With the confidence Driver back in the bag, I only missed two fairways all day. Love this Driver, would happily play it any time. It isn't the longest, but it isn't far behind them. The 12* doesn't bother me. It was blowing solid all day and it handled the wind without issue. I do launch pretty low normally,so it suits me and the extra forgiveness is obvious and welcome at times. If you can master it, a high toe hit is super effective with the SFT.

The Cobra Fly Z Pro combos are Golf porn IMO. These irons are drop dead gorgeous with their Polished finish. I struck them pretty well for the most part. They were particularly effective around the greens, the extra feel flowed into my short game which was pretty solid all day. And I putted solidly with a new putter for another sub 30 round.

And back out yesterday for another single Stab. Struggled a bit on the front, but came home strong for 14/19 = 33pts with a wipe on each nine.

Driver: TM M4 Tour 9.5* with MR Kuro Kage Black Reg
    Fairway: Titleist 917 F2 3 Wood
Hybrid: Callaway BB Alpha 815 18*
    Irons: Cobra King F8 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI1 50*, 53* & 57*
Putter: Yes Natalie CS C-B 38"

With the predicted strong SW winds, I threw the M4 in the bag and it performed very well. It takes a little time to tune into this driver. It is very open faced and is easy to hit big left if you don't respect it. I find I start with it hitting low launching small cuts that run out well and are easy to aim and control. As I warm to it, you can start hitting straight ones as as well, and even turn it gently left to right, once you are comfortable. I did hit one pulled hooky draw, but I had to exaggerate the swing significantly to manage it. I really enjoy this driver, it is lots of fun to hit.

The F8s were pretty solid most of the day. The only issue was they can be very hot off the face at times, and that cost me more than once during the round.

I putted quite well, but couldn't manage to maintain my 30 or less record this time (32).

No golf for me this week till Friday, when we managed to get in a mid morning round. It was very pleasant out there and our group of 4 managed a sub 4hr round to top it off. I doubled the first, but then strung a line of pars together, with a wipe at 7 for 19pts the front. A bit of a slow start on the back nine, but managed to put together another 18pts for 37 total, which was enough to win A grade.

Driver: Ryoma Maxima D -1 Type G 10.5* with Aldila NVS 65 Stiff
Fairway: Cobra Fly Z 3 Wood
Hybrid: Adams Pro Mini 18*, Titleist U510 22* with KBS Tour 90
Irons: Cobra King Forged TEC Steel 5 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI1 50*, 53* & 57*
Putter: TM TP Collection Berwick C-B 38"

I was blocking the Ryoma left early on, but gradually got it under control. Trying to hit it too hard and getting too quick, my weakness. As I gradually got the swing under control , the Drives started coming out pretty solid. The high launch was not ideal in the windy conditions, but I did manage to take advantage of it down wind a few times. I really like the look of the Ryoma. It is a touch closed, but the gold face seems to calm any negative thoughts.

First time out with a new set of Forged TEC (original 2015/2016 version) with KBC C Taper 110 Lites. I really enjoyed them. I already have a set of the black finish version with UST Recoils, but this set was so cheap I could not resist

The find of the day was the U510 though. Boy, did I enjoy hit this. Super high launching, but did not seem to spin up at all. I was getting solid distance out of it and it was so easy to hit. Super straight as well.

The short game started slow, but then got hot, and the Putter got warm. I was hitting them dead and made a few long putts as well (29).

Back out yesterday for an afternoon round. Got to play with a gun off 2. He hit the ball a mile (TM SIM), but got a bit loose late on. Birdied the first (390m), Drive, wedge to 3 feet. The field was slow and congested early, but slowly started moving. I started very slow, my driving was poor and I struggled to score early. Gradually got it together and finished with 15 points. Came out firing on the back nine though and managed 21 points with a wipe (stupid cart paths) to total 36. Solid ,but not enough to take the cookies this time. My Bird on 17 out of the fairway bunker was sweet.

Driver: TM RBZ Stage 2 9.5* with Fujikura Rocketfuel 50 stiff
    Fairway: Cleveland 588 3 Wood
    Hybrid: Callaway Epic #3 19*
    Irons: Srixon Z565 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI1 50*, 53* & 57*
Putter: TM Spider Mallet 74 CS C-B 38"

I started the same old way, trying to hit the Driver too hard and blocking them left. It took my a full 10 holes before i started getting it under control, but when I did it was pretty solid. This was probably my worst driving performance with this driver. I hit it much better, usually. Distance was solid, but again nowhere near the length i have achieved with it previously.

I was solid with the 565s from the fairway, but excelled with them in the short game. My short game was very hot, again hitting them dead more often than not, hit the pin more than once too. And the solid putting continued (29). If I had a long putt, the 2nd was always a kick in. The 30+ footer I sunk on the 17 was a gem.

My first round of the week was on Wednesday, the usual Single Stab at Reddie Bay. This one was a real Roller Coaster ride. I started slow, 4 pts through the first 3. Made a great U & D on 4 and followed with BPBP, before wiping the 9th for 17 points the front. The back nine was another ride, another slow struggle start and then a big finish to par the last 3 for 14pts and 31 total.

Driver: Mizuno ST-180 10.5* with PL Blue Reg
    Fairway: TM M5 3 Wood
    Hybrid: Cobra Baffler Pro 18*

This was only my second round with the Mizzy. I put the head aside to try a different shaft at opportunity and forgot about it! I found it buried under some old packaging the other day. I was hopeful that my favorite shaft would make it a touch friendlier, and so it proved to be. This is a seriously good Driver, I was very impressed with it. And it is looong. The longest I have used for a while. My swing is still some work in progress, so I didn't always hit it where I wanted too, but once I got tuned in, it was fairly deadly.

I struggled a little with the A4s. I hadn't played them for a long time. They were sold at one stage, but the sale ended up falling through. So I had to reinstate them to my specs, which I finally got around to doing. My stats were actually OK with them, but I didn't feel quite in tune with them. I worked out later that my grip wasn't where it should be, I was palming the grip too much. Some more work to do to fix.

The short game was mixed, but I putted very well (29).

We were back out on Friday morning for another round in some glorious sunshine. A gusty SW/SE kept it cool, but it was still a great day to be on the course. I started very solidly this time, 20pts on the back nine. And continued it for much of the front nine, but staggered home for 35 points total, which was enough to take runner up on the day.

Driver: Ping G25 9.5* with PL Red Stiff
    Fairway: Cobra F8 3 Wood
    Hybrid: TM SLDR #3 19*
Irons: Cobra S3 Pro Combo 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSI1 50*, 53* & 57*
    Putter: Yes Stephanie

It had been 2 & 1/2 years since I last bagged the G25. This was only its second outing. Boy, it launches high!, even at 9.5* and with the lower launching PL Red. But it did not seem to be spinning up too much. There was certainly plenty of breeze to test it and it never felt short on distance. And down wind it was long.

I couldn't believe it was 18 months since I had last bagged my favorite S3s. They did not let me down. These irons are so sweeet to hit! And I made best GIR numbers in a quite while as well.

Again the short game was mixed, but this time my putting was off (34). I just did not feel good over the ball. I eventually worked it out during the my round, yep grip again!.

Back out again yesterday for a Saturday round. Unfortunately, we were at the back at the field and it was slooow progress, finishing in the gloom of dusk. I started very solidly and accumulated 19pts on the front, but fade again at the end for only 14pt coming home, 33pts total.

Driver: Ping I25 10.5* with Pl Blue Stiff
    Fairway: Cleveland Launcher 3 Wood
    Hybrid: Ping G400 #3 19*
Irons: Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSi1 50*, 53* & 57*
    Putter: SC Kombi S C-B 38"

After enjoying the G25, I thought I should give the I25 a run as well (last hit Jul 2017). And it didn't disappoint. It launches way lower than the G, is quite workable and solidly long. Unfortunately, I started to struggle off the tee late in the round and spoilt an otherwise impressive driving performance. I seemed to have pulled something near my lower left back/top of hip. Or perhaps my longer, wider swing (or attempts there at) have awoken a muscle that hasn't been used for a while? All I know is it is still giving me curry today!

My iron play was good for most of the round. Not as precise as I would like, but nevertheless an improvement. I am trying to get my grip back in the top of my fingers and I am gradually getting there, but with the occasional regression!

I was very solid with the short game till late in the round. The problem was I wasn't making the putts I usually do. I was close, but was leaving them in the jaws or was leaking them across the face of the hole. Eventually that took a toll on my short game confidence. I worked it out all too late. In trying to correct my iron swing, I had let my putter grip creep into the fingers, and that lead to the little imperceptible "corrections" and a loss of my usual feel.

We attempted to play a comp round last Wednesday but got rained out. When your socks start wicking the rain into your shoes, you know it is time to be somewhere else!

Back out Friday morning for a single Stab. I started OK but never got out of 2nd gear for 17 points the front. A better start the back, but then stumbled and back to 2nd gear for 15pts coming home.

Driver: Callaway BB Alpha 9* with PL Blue Reg
    Fairway: Ping G20 3 Wood
    Hybrid: Cleveland Launcher 18*
Irons: Callaway Apex Pro/Apex Combo 4 - PW
    Wedges TM RSi1 50*, 53* & 57*
    Putter: Rife Barbados C-B 38"

The Alpha was in the bag on Wednesday and I couldn't hit it to save myself. This forced me to finally make time for a trip to the Driving Range to sort it and my swing generally. I ended up changing out the Speeder 565 I had in it for my stock PL Blue shaft. I also tweaked up the loft by 1*. From memory this was the first model with the Gravity Core. I had it set with the weight high, but really didn't perceive any significant difference with changing it up or down. The Alpha feels very solid/heavy (woody) off the face (like a Nike Flex). The changes made a lot of difference. I was hitting it straight and long most of the day, only straying when I tried to hit it too hard late in the round.

I don't get on with the Apex Pros for some reason. They feel too hard/harsh off the face. Not like a forged club at all. The ordinary Apex on the other hand feel great and I like them a lot.

My short game was pretty solid but I made very few putts. I was putting well but struggled with the pace(s) of the greens. Lots of 2 putts, few 1 putts for 33 total.

Maybe it is the offset on the Apex compared to the Apex Pro's is what you like?
