Default 2015 VIC Champs - Feb 5-9 official thread

Well ladies and gents, its the moment you've all been waiting for...

Thur & Sun night accomm: As usual we will be staying at the magnificent Chateau de Andigold, the Parkview Hotel, 562 St Kilda Rd. Options include 4 to a room, 2 to a room and the "Solarman single". Approx $60 per night.
Fri & Sat night accomm: BayPlay Lodge and Cottage, Blairgowrie. We have the lodge and Cottage, sleeping around 42 (I think, will confirm). We will have the whole complex to ourselves, pool included. Cost approx $70 a head per night, but the more we get the cheaper it becomes for everyone.

Now, the info you really care about:

Thurs golf: We head back to the #18 ranked course in Australia, Woodlands Golf Club. As per last year, tee-off will be shotgun start from around 4.00PM. Cost of $80 per head.
Friday golf: The Uncivil War III will be held at the venue of the 2014 Handa Australian Womens Open, and #11 ranked course in Aus, Victoria Golf Club. Cost is confirmed at $225 and includes a light lunch prior and drinks and a BBQ dinner after the match. Field is not limited. Be there before 11:00 am for team photos and lunch.
Sat golf: You loved it in 2013, so we had to put it back in the rota. St Andrews Beach, ranked #21 in Aus. We have 36 spots booked and 13 carts. $71 per walker, $89 per Carter. Tee off from 12:27pm.
Sun golf: The beautiful and picturesque RACV Cape Schanck Resort, for the great price of $45 for walkers and $68 for Carters. Again, 32 spots and 11 carts booked. Tee off from 8:12AM - 9:08AM. $5 pull carts available for hire.
Mon golf: We head back to the "mudbelt", but next door to last years venue. La Trobe GC. $50 a head, and tee-off from 8AM.

As per usual, please let me know in the thread what days you will be attending, what nights accommodation you will be needing and whether you need a cart for Saturday & Sunday.

More info will be posted as it comes to hand.

Anyone got a first-born son we can donate to see if we can get onto National?

3 at Old has its issues as well. The approach into a headwind can be a nightmare - but it is a better hole than 15 at CS.

It was on Old 3rd where a bloke had a 15 foot putt for birdie, it sailed down the hill past the hole and ended up with a 90m pitch back up to the green! They have now grown the grass longer before the green to help balls hold.

As for getting on at the National, they would put us on Ocean, and anyone who thinks CS and St AB are tricked up and unfair ain't seen nothing yet!

Just out of interest, who thinks St AB is "tricked up"? It's miles wide and A FAIR AMOUNT of the trouble is laid out in front of you. Nothing like the tightness and trickery of CS.

    3 holes at CS were a bit tricked up, 12, 13, 15.

I actually thought SAB was fine, but I did have Hux pointing me around the place.

STAB is perfect love to see how it would play with fast greens though

I do find the surrounds an issue they were originally sowen to a fescue/bent mix the bent took over leaving soft surrounds that dont enable you to bump and run as well as if they were fescue - remember how great it was at royal with the fescue that allowed bump and run type shots, i played it well on my way to 100. i saw also there was a fescue surround at vic that they are trialing

It would be a different course again if the fescue was there instead of the bent.

Speaking as a hacker and a confessed tricked up resort course hater, I tend to think StAB is the pick of all the premium tracks on the Mornington Peninsula (setting aside Nash because I've never been there). I don't think it is all that 'tricked up' compared to other crazy golf roller coaster resort courses that I've played. It's got plenty of width off the tee and it's thankfully not super long. Most of the approaches give you a way in, and if it's a really long approach you tend to get a bigger green or a bit more room to miss. I think the way they had it set up this year was super-friendly too. There are a few tricky bits (like the BenM bunker) but most of the time you can do quite well if you remember to look at the green from the tee (which I never do).

I seem to remember Dunes being a little bit too relentless for my liking, and Moonah was a bit crazy in patches but not too bad - the enormous greens made up for the stupid stuff in most cases.
Still not playing enough GolfLink | Slightly less terrible stats brought to you by Golfshot - F: 57%, GIR: 23%, UD: 14%, P: 34. Wow, improvement! | Nickent brand ho or tightarse? You be the judge!

Remember playing the 3rd (was it the 16th then?) in the wind without the rough that was tough!!!! even pitches to the green would run off at least 100.

CS was obviously a lot tighter and trickier than St AB given that I could only get to 43 points as apposed to 46.

But seriously, I personally didn't find St AB tricked up. It's definitely wide which played in my favour but I was also much straighter off the tee than usual. Maybe it was a mental thing for me, having such a wide target perhaps let me swing a bit freer and not think about missing the often tree lined smaller fairways that I'm used to. La Trobe quickly brought me back to earth.

I definitely preferred the more natural feel of St AB over CS.

    Couldn't agree more.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

Yeah the beach is so not tricked up and as wide as you need. The only thing with wider fairways is mooonah legends and in all honesty CS is all about position golf and would be easier the 2nd time you play it. The 15th is a dog and needs a couple of bulldozers !!
If it aint for sale the right price has just not been offered

15 at CS I smash driver up the guts, hit a draw 8 iron and it's in the old couples lounge room. That was ridiculous.

I hit two which faded on the breeze onto the cart path, never to be seen again.

At least til Matt3Jab found Pete the Provisional in the group behind.

Pete then disappeared in the goonge on 18, never to be seen again.

    I miss Pete.

In regards to CS 15, the view was nice! The fact I got a par didn't hurt either.

I got a good drive away, landed on the very left edge of the fairway and my ball then proceeded to roll sideways, hard right and stopped only just short of the fairway bunker . I think I hit a 9 iron in from there. Just reading the course guide now, that's pretty well exactly how it says to play it. If my ball had landed any further to the right, it would have been onto the cart path and into the shit on the right I reckon so there isn't really room for error. Hate to think what it would be like into a strong wind.
