Default 2015 VIC Champs - Feb 5-9 official thread

Well ladies and gents, its the moment you've all been waiting for...

Thur & Sun night accomm: As usual we will be staying at the magnificent Chateau de Andigold, the Parkview Hotel, 562 St Kilda Rd. Options include 4 to a room, 2 to a room and the "Solarman single". Approx $60 per night.
Fri & Sat night accomm: BayPlay Lodge and Cottage, Blairgowrie. We have the lodge and Cottage, sleeping around 42 (I think, will confirm). We will have the whole complex to ourselves, pool included. Cost approx $70 a head per night, but the more we get the cheaper it becomes for everyone.

Now, the info you really care about:

Thurs golf: We head back to the #18 ranked course in Australia, Woodlands Golf Club. As per last year, tee-off will be shotgun start from around 4.00PM. Cost of $80 per head.
Friday golf: The Uncivil War III will be held at the venue of the 2014 Handa Australian Womens Open, and #11 ranked course in Aus, Victoria Golf Club. Cost is confirmed at $225 and includes a light lunch prior and drinks and a BBQ dinner after the match. Field is not limited. Be there before 11:00 am for team photos and lunch.
Sat golf: You loved it in 2013, so we had to put it back in the rota. St Andrews Beach, ranked #21 in Aus. We have 36 spots booked and 13 carts. $71 per walker, $89 per Carter. Tee off from 12:27pm.
Sun golf: The beautiful and picturesque RACV Cape Schanck Resort, for the great price of $45 for walkers and $68 for Carters. Again, 32 spots and 11 carts booked. Tee off from 8:12AM - 9:08AM. $5 pull carts available for hire.
Mon golf: We head back to the "mudbelt", but next door to last years venue. La Trobe GC. $50 a head, and tee-off from 8AM.

As per usual, please let me know in the thread what days you will be attending, what nights accommodation you will be needing and whether you need a cart for Saturday & Sunday.

More info will be posted as it comes to hand.

Because we caught it with little wind and off the whites / blues / whatever the hell we were off. Imagine a 50 km/h breeze into you off the blacks. The thing would be impossible.

Plus you do hit it 30m further than us "normies".

Design / layout issues. I understand it's the no. 1 rated hole for a reason but I think it's bad design. You have a very narrow fairway, on a hole that will 90% of the time play into a strong breeze, with everything sloping down to OOB / certain death. So if you're playing it off the blacks (which is the way a course should be designed then other tees figured out from there) and there's any little bit of wind, you can't hit iron or hybrid as you won't make the fairway (it's 200m according to the course guide). So you're being forced to hit fairway wood or driver with virtually unplayable hill left, death right and if you manage to nail one you might still go into the kack due to a bad bounce off the slope.

My opinion, if you widened the fairway 5 metres and took some of the slope off the fairway to avoid any major bounce to the right it's still a tough hole that would be worthy of its no. 1 ranking, but not stupidly penal. From what I've heard our groups average on there would've been a point per player, and we played it off the damn whites!

I didn't like it either, I think a fairway that was flat would make it a great hole - there is just no shot you can play off the tee (if you can't carry it 260+) that will give you a decent result. Anything short of the corner rolls further away from the green.

I had 6i distance in - to a hole that wasn't much lower than the height my 6i goes!
Add me to the list of don't likes. What was it with all the blind tee shots and greens at CS and St A? All just Wank factor imo. They are resort courses I guess, but the designs basically dictate that you should probably drive the holes before you play them, and all they seem to do was create bottle necks as each group spent time searching for balls.

    Bingo.

There were 2 big differences for my score at St Andrews compared to last time.

    1. I wasn't hungover as a ****.
    2. I'd played there before.

I didn't have that many issues with blind tee shots at St Andrews. The long 4, but that was in the course guide and had posts to indicate line.

They are working on 15 at CS. They have cleared a long way up the slope on the left where it used to be shit all the way down to the fairway and I am told they are working on changing the shape of that hill a bit to make some more room.

The more I think about there are some awful shots to greens also. 1 and 5 are pretty bad (especially 1 as there is NO indication of where the green is, some sort of pole on the hill would be a good idea), as is 8 (although clearly Larry had no trouble with it!). The back nine is easily the superior 9 for mine with only the one blind tee shot (which at least has aiming markers), no blind shots to the green and 15 the only really weak hole.

I don't think making assessments based on one round of a new course gives a fair reflection. These courses are all better second time round - the first time magic is still there, but you have a better understanding of where to hit it.

I don't recall bagging of RMW because you couldn't see the landing areas on 4, 9, 17 and 18 (and struggling to remember this 100% accurately).

    No way Lefty.

9 is over a ridge. We had to wait for the group in front to get to the green before we hit, as I watched the guys in front of us (whilst I was playing get peppered whilst waiting for the green to clear.
17 is up to a ridge and skyline fairway - and if you hug the left the fairway is blind.

Thinking more about it, 8 is blind if you are long as there is the ridge at 200 and the dip before the green, and 12 hits to a raised fairway where a tall bloke like Spanner might see it but I couldn't visualise where the fairway was.

    I'll know for next time.

If you don't like the blind tee shots, then you wouldn't like National Moonah (and probably Old) which are both Top 10 on every list going around.

8 is definitely more blind than 9, 9 is very see-able. A good drive gets you up to the trees on the right, which you can easily see the base of.

At RMW the best line is blind on 17 if you go over the corner. If you see your tee shot land on 18 you will not hold the green with your second shot.

There is a 1 sq m sign on the first tee that the green is behind the bunkers on the 1st at StAB. I don't know what else to tell you.
5 you can see the green from the tee, but not for your second from the line of charm down the left. You can see it from right of the centre bunker but it is a more difficult shot. If you can't remember what you were looking at 5 minutes ago when you hit your tee shot I suspect this is the least of your problems.

How do you blokes remember all this stuff?

I can only remember the drive on 15 because I remember benno's ball taking off down the hill. I probably hit a 3 wood, but I hit a really good one on a good line and it held the top side of the fairway, more or less. I don't remember what I had with the second shot, but I must have put it on the green and made 4 with two putts, according to my watch. Can't have been that hard.

1 and 2 must have been terrible holes though, because I can't remember anything about them at all, and I wiped both of them badly.
Still not playing enough GolfLink | Slightly less terrible stats brought to you by Golfshot - F: 57%, GIR: 23%, UD: 14%, P: 34. Wow, improvement! | Nickent brand ho or tightarse? You be the judge!

I could describe every hole I played of the 90 without a hassle. Par, shape, green and surrounds etc.

My new employees name? No chance. Its why I have a post it note on my PC.

In the grand scheme of things I'd barely call 17 at RMW a blind tee shot. You can see the bunkers there, and you'd be able to see any playing groups that are there. Nothing even close to what most would call a blind tee shot. 4 and 18 certainly qualify and yes, for the record, I'm not a fan of those either.

I know about the sign on 1 Bruce, but those bunkers are 50 metres wide with a 15 metre green. Which part of the bunker do you aim at? I actually thought I'd blocked the shit out of my shot there but was only 10 feet off the back. A small aiming post in the centre of the green for the "newbs" to the course would be nice.

5 is not too bad, just using it as an example of a blind shot. You can only see the tip of the flag from the best line, not bad but not ideal.

I took my visitors to the back tee on 3 so they could see the 5th green and pin position.

Its one of the things I like about St AB. You have to notice things on other holes whilst walking yours....

The pricks I had played with had both had eagles and wipes by then. I was hoping golf karma would also give me an eagle. Instead it kicked me in the nuts

Late on the conversation about 15 at CB i dont think its too bad (2 balls OOB), the course next door has a great version (3rd) that's not blind but very similar

Dont forget CS was designed all those years ago as a fun resort track, the real (and bloody outstanding) course is next door
