    Default Death of mixed irons..

I was talking to dad and some of his friends...they where talking about old clubs they used to have in thier bags, i noted that many of them used to used mixed sets of club. They talked about then the death of this and that in the new age all irons are one brand mostly...no one used different brand and style irons...

I have looked a fair number of bags and all of the bags in the forum... i know there are a few life golfers here whom have been playing the game for a while... whats the go, did golfers really used mixed bags? and why dont we still do that now?

Guys who have mixed bags probably don't play golf very much. I had a mixed bag for years, then bought a set once I started getting into golf a little more.

my first few sets were mixed bags.

I had a set of East Bros blades till I was 15. Then I got a half set of Prosimmon things and filled the gaps with the East Bros. Then I moved to a half set of Cobra Baffler Blades and filled gthe gaps of that set with the pro simmons!

then I got Norman Grind Blades, Hogan blades and then recently the srixons.

so I've had a few mixed bags

I had a mixed bag as a junior and then used them for a while when I came back to golf 3 years ago. 2 Drummond iron half sets cobbled together 3-8 & pw, a Dunlop 9 iron, a couple of Specialist laminated woods (I don't know who made them), a second hand Macgregor persimmon driver, a second hand Sam Snead sand wedge, and a Drummond putter with two flat sides. No idea what flex any of the clubs are. Wonder what I'd get for it if I popped in the For Sale section?

i used to play with a guy, when i was in TeamFore golf, that had a total mixed bag .... i doubt any 2 clubs were the same brand/style.

He used to play off a low handicap consistently with these clubs too ... buggered if i know how

Macca and azza might remember the name ... Rod Bassingthwaite.

In the old days I reckon that people used a mixed bag for a few different reasons. as today, sets were not cheap, but to be able to buy single clubs was fine and this was how most people bought them. also if one was to break a club it was easier to just find another club to replace it instead of getting it fixed. and finally I think that it was a feel thing. that's what Scott says.. he had a mixed set and said it was because he really loved the feel of certain clubs, it didn't matter to him what brand they were as long as they all did the job and felt good.

Nowadays, I think that companies build clubs to have a consistent feel throughout the whole set. People are become a bit more loyalist too...I, for example only use SMT irons and driver, but I use a Cleveland wedge, cause they feel better... I guess the feel of wedges will always be a personal thing...

i had a mixed bag as a junior, buying clubs from k-mart, target, garage sales, you name it, i bought clubs from everywhere!
then when i was a cadet, the pro said i should get a 'real' set, so i did, and that made me work so hard at my golf when i was 13. it was a reward, but my mixed set is still in the old brown bag at my nans place, if i go there i always use the mix set cause its so fun, the looks on peoples faces when i play through them and out-drive them is priceless.

hardly ever seen anyone with mixed irons, and i have been playing 25 years.

its not a thing that naturally happens. nobody goes into a shop and says, 10 irons please, all different brands.

My first set was an ex-hire mixed half set. I was only a kid and was stoked to get my own clubs, regardless what they were.

My mixed bag set had Keith Knox irons here and there. If a club broke, I would go to Cash Converters and get another to replace it for about $10.

I used a mixed set when the whole cavity back thing was just starting. I had Hogan blades, but was having trouble hitting the long irons (I was 14 at the time) so I saved my brithday money and got 1, 3-5 Ping EYE2 irons and kept the Hogan short irons. Now the technology has evolved, it's not necessary, but back in the öld"days, you often had to mix sets to get the desired playability from certain clubs.

That Ping 1-iron stayed in my bag for a LONG time.....Until I was about 24 I think......Man they were great clubs off the tee......
