    Default Golf in Launceston

    Hey guys,

Hoping some locals, or anyone with experience could give us a hand. A group of us are heading down to play Barnbougle and Lost Farm in April and have full days either side as we have an early arrival and late departure. Planning to squeeze in a game somewhere around Launceston... Would anyone recommend Launceston Golf Club? If not, anywhere else?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

    Calling BenM.
I hear Launceston isn't too bad.

There is a nice nine holer at the top of the Tamar - Greens Beach or something like that. I recommend playing barnie or lost farm again instead!

Actually WB has a point. Why the hell would you play anywhere else? If you haven't played there you'll understand why afterwards.

Cheers fellas. You're both right! Not even sure why I considered playing elsewhere. We don't leave for home till 8pm on our last day, so we might as well use Day 1 to cruise on up, load up on food and drink (renting a house in Bridport), play Lost Farm then Barny days 2 and 3, and play our favourite again on day 4 before flying back to Syd.

    Default Golf in Launceston

Launceston GC is probably the best course in Ltn itself but then I am a little biased being a member there.

You also have Riverside, Mowbray and Country Club Tasmania (known locally as the Casino). The Cas is public access, all the others are members courses but will probably let you on, wouldn't knock back the green fees. I could certainly get you on at Launceston.

There are lots of country courses around too, I have played a couple of them but not all. I hear Quamby is a very nice little course (about 25 mins out of Launceston) but there's also Exeter, Deloraine, Campbell Town, lots of others pretty close by.

Ulverstone is a bit of a hidden gem IMO - Ferrins just played or is about to play it so he'll tell you) - it's a bit over an hour out of Launnie but worth the drive I reckon. There is also Woodrising in Devonport.

Heaps of options, put it that way. Guess it depends what you want .

    Cheers Ben,

I'll consult the boys and let you know if they'd still be interested in a hit at Launceston GC. Good to know you'd be able to get us on if we choose to go with that. Do you guys have members/visitors competitions on Mondays or Thursdays? Who knows, the guys may even be keen to squeeze 4 games in.

Nah - main men's comps are Wednesday and Saturdays, there isn't really anything aside from that except on public holidays or the Friday chook run (5 holes).

Monday is the Veteran's comp in the morning. Members can generally get a game in with them but even we can't play in the comp unless you're a member of the Vets. It usually gets a reasonable turn out so you'd likely have to play early or start in the arvo. Unless it's a public holiday, there'll be a pro shop comp on.

Thursday is probably a better day, there is a ladies comp in the morning but they would usually only have 4 groups maybe. The course would usually be pretty quiet the rest of the day.

We played Launceston after flying in, as we weren't driving to Bridport until the next morning.

Definitely wouldn't do that again, especially at $70 for a Friday arvo social round.

I think if you're introduced by a member it's more like $35 (don't quote me).

Otherwise it is a bit dear, but I think that is by design... it's not really a public access course and it's intended to keep social choppers away I suspect.

No prob., as it was part of an indulgence weekend for a mate's 60th.

Hospitality was great and the 'anti-chopper' policy meant that the round wasn't held up, or being hit up on.

Course reminded me of Queanbeyan, Springwood or Eastlake in NSW.

Scottsdale is about half an hour away from Bridport. Used to be a good country track

Yeah that's true, I haven't played it but was told it was decent.

Bridport also has a 9 holer - I played it last year. Greens were very very slow, but the course was otherwise not too bad considering it's all maintained by volunteers.

That's exactly how I'd do it. When you go down again you can try the other courses. Soak up the experience of the no. 11 and 25th or so rated courses in the world.

Most are right here, you aren't going to get anything remotely similar to BB or LF around Launceston area.
